Hello from San Benito, Texas 😃 you still have a lot of space to plant! Plant vertical along the fence with grapes, muscadines, Malabar spinach, green beans, etc.. ....happy gardening

Good for you! It’s great that you’re utilizing your green space with edibles instead of plain old subdivision grass and bushes! I live an hour outside Austin and am embarking on my virgin land new garden too. Best of luck to you, fellow gardener!

Thank you! I think plain old grass and bushes looks great but it’s too boring for my wife and I

Judging from the yellow leaves and poor growth , your soil needs nitrogen, I like Milorgante 6-4-0 . Try Kale you will get a longer harvest time. My slugs like cheap Ice house beer in quart bottles with a screw on top.

I was going to suggest to dig up all that grass in the backyard and plant and create a food forest!! But then I just saw the quality of the soil!! Will take a lot of work and awhile to build up if you choose to do this idea!! Good luck!!

My game plan is to move to a small town in 2-3 years and buy a couple acres with better soil there!

@@AustinTexasGardening Don't wait!! I've been watching a lot of off the grid stuff!! And I know a couple who have been trying to find an off the grid property for two years!! Because of the pandemic...ppl are buying up!!
@AustinTexasGardening3 жыл бұрын
@@uppanadam74 I'm gonna wait just a few years because I bought at 262k in a rural suburb on the edge of Austin in feb 2020, and over the past year theyve been building urban stuff like this in the corn fields and cattle ranches that recently surrounded me - eastvillageatx.com/ my property value has already gone up about 100k, I figure if I just wait until elon builds the tesla gigafactory, I can sell at 500k or rent for well over my $1700 mortgage payment

Horse and cow manure should be plentiful in Texas - get some and add to the top of soil. next winter be sure to prune your peach trees

Have you thought of raising your garden beds and moving them further from your house? That should give you a pretty substantial increase in direct sunlight during the spring time.
@AustinTexasGardening3 жыл бұрын
I have! I think im going to build it up with limestome for a half in ground, half raised bed. If you take a look at my first youtube video you can see how much trouble working with my native clay soil can be
@nuclearscarab3 жыл бұрын
@@AustinTexasGardening Ya, seems like you might just want to do fully above ground with all new soil. It will cost more but would be easier, and the higher you get it the more sun it will have. Just a thought.

Hi from DFW! Just wondering if you’ve thought some grow bags along your fence line? Maybe more sun loving things along the sides and then things that love more shade along the back?? You could probably make the most of it this way🤷🏾♀️ just an idea. Beautiful front yard. Also, consider a hanging basket or grow tower for your strawberries. Maybe sprinkle some DE around the plant...tfs
@AustinTexasGardening3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea! I wanted to build a platform for terracotta pots along the fence and I think I’ll put some grow bags there too!!

You should do some research on soil temperature and cool weather plants that thrive in cold soil with the ending of a hot sun. Slugs prove that it's not a poor quality soil. I believe cabbage needs its roots to be in consistent 60°F soil (why they're better autumn crop). It's why they're not yellowing or wilting. They're fresh and green cause they're happy for now. Just wait. Edit: just wanted to double check the soil temp for cabbage. Its 50-80...they grow better around 65-70, from what I understand. homeguides.sfgate.com/optimum-temperature-growing-cabbage-67094.html --hope it helps!
@AustinTexasGardening3 жыл бұрын
Thats good info, appreciate it Ash! I'm worried because highs for early May are often in the 90s, but the cabbage is still tiny. At this point, im going to leave it until it produces or dies
