It is sad to see when vandals destroy or deface memorials. I do not understand the kind of mentality these people have. Perhaps the submarine has enough scrap value to cover the cost of another memorial. I think trying to repair the submarine at this point would be quite expensive. Memorials are expensive to continually maintain and often have only one purpose. Maybe creating a memorial that has an additional purpose which creates revenue or reduces overall cost is the way to go.

Its a darn shame to see the USS Ling sitting there rotting away. It would take a lot of money, but it would be good to see it pulled out of the water and secured on dry land as a static display piece like the sub in Chicago and there's also another one (I can't remember where it is, somewhere in a park on the Mississippi river) or, towed out of there and taken down state to be tied up next to the USS New Jersey where it could get some visitors. If I remember, the water got inside the sub because some vandals went inside of it one night and opened the sea cocks. They did a lot of damage to the interior and there is currently a volunteer crew trying to save her.

It's really a shame what has happened to the Ling. I understand that there has been disputes between City, State and Federal responsibility for the vessel. The "floating Boom" is actually a device to absorb any chemicals and oils rising from the derilict vessel. In the early 1980's I took the family on the tour when my boys were very young. Also I attended Fairleigh Dickinson in the mid-1970's after moving from the Bronx and transferring to FDU. By the way, the way FDU does occupy both sides of the Hackensack with the Dental School being on the West Bank. In my teen years of the late 1960's I fished and crabbed the length of the Hackensack from NY State down to Seacaus along baarely accessible banks of both the east and west sides. Various spots along the River border the Meadowlands which at that time was a fast marshland teeming with wildlife of every sort. In the Meadowlands I spotted a huge Nutria, a large non-native rodent that became naturlized over the decades, likely from escaped pets. Hey! Maybe tomorrow's Hurricane Debbie will wash the sub out and make it Newark's problem!

When the Ling was towed to its current location there was regular barge traffic on the Hackensack river so a shipping channel was maintained in the river up to the City of Hackensack. There has been no barge traffic to Hackensack for many years now so the shipping lane has not been maintained and is totally silted in. The shipping channel would have to be dredged out and that's federal, the state could not do such a thing on its own.

In 2020 I was the photographer documenting the efforts to prepare the Ling to be removed from the silt and moved to a museum in Kentucky. Those efforts fell apart during the pandemic. I made a video featuring a tour of the interior with a man who served on the ship. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJy7kIOqma98psksi=JT_QlVMJtI86NL3D

Where is that dock? I work about 5 minutes from the Ling and never knew there was a dock around there. I have no clue how you access that county park.
@TwoFeetOutdoors4 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's a bit hidden behind a mall. If you Google it, maps will get you there. It's a pretty overgrown lesser used park, it seems. I set everything up on the dock but launched through some marsh grass off a trail near the dock. I just went and explored and made it work. It's not ideal. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

@@TwoFeetOutdoorsthat’s the Riverside Square Mall. I have to see how I can get behind it. I don’t have a kayak yet, but I have an RC boat that goes about 60mph and requires open spaces to run it.

Not "abandoned" They're museum ships. Click-bait headline.
@TwoFeetOutdoorsАй бұрын
@jamesmeader6539 Certainly NOT click-bait. The Ling is no longer a museum and hasn't been accessible to the public since 2016. It's currently stuck in the silt on the bottom of the Hackensack River. The sub has been flooded by vandals, and the plank to board the Ling was damaged from Hurricane Sandy. There's currently no plans for the USS Ling's future. Do some more research. The Quester 1 was never a museum ship and is in the middle of Coney Island Creek. It doesn't get more abandoned than that. Thanks 😀 Please watch the video, and you will see.

I grew up in the hackensack .And when I was young went for tours on the Ling Many of times it was a great memorial park area. They had veterans that serve time on that vessel.But they're all gone now.I'm sure.
