Join me on an epic adventure to a hidden oasis right in the heart of NYC! I paddled out to Mau Mau Island in Brooklyn, NY for an overnight camping trip that I will never forget. Mau Mau Island is one of two uninhabited islands in Brooklyn and was formerly a landfill. This was an incredibly unique experience and perspective rarely seen in New York City.

I grew up in Manhattan (now live in nj). This is one of the most surprising & mind blowing videos I’ve ever seen. I was like Brooklyn?? As in New York? Looks like Montauk!! Is there any foul smells though? I was so pleasantly surprised at the clean sandy camp ground too!!!

I grew up in Gerritsen Beach and this was our back yard. Crabbing, fishing for blues and snappers, hanging out on Mau Mau and the point. It was a wonderful, unique and crazy neighborhood. A lot has changed in GB, some good some bad. The memories we have of the old days with remain. Beach rats, all of us.

Greetings Matt, I was raised in Brooklyn and believed I had a comprehensive understanding of the area. My Aunt, born in 1905 in Bensonhurst, spent her entire life on the same block where I was raised, living to the remarkable age of 105. Although I have visited Marine Park numerous times, I had never encountered or heard of Mau Mau Island. I appreciate the outstanding video you shared. Additionally, the book "Bayridge Chronicles," which spans from the early 1600s to the 1970s, is quite remarkable, featuring maps, illustrations, and early photographs. Thank you once more! New friend

I live in Far Rockaway but lived a year in Brooklyn many years ago (first year of high school), and have gone there often. Those waterways you paddle are a wonderful respite, but I am sorry to say from my perspective most of Brooklyn is pretty...sad, in most respects. Still, the shore areas and especially Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens are gems. Thanks for the video, was nice to see Brooklyn from this perspective.

I never heard of Mau Mau Island. I don't paddle in the city much unless someone is planning a paddle there and it sounds interesting and fun. I was surprised to see a well set up campground on the island with flags flying. I'm surprised no one was there. I've camped and paddled at several locations on Long Island, usually county and state parks. It's a good time, albeit not as remote as Mau Mau Island. There is often showers there and sometimes a snack bar or food nearby. Maybe not as exploratory or interesting, but some comforts are OK with me.

video was amazing, I never knew there was such a nice island around marine park. How did you sleep? You really capture nature, and just overall peace in your videos. Keep up the amazing work and share your product reviews with us lol. :) I think out of all the videos this was one of my favorite, it has a sense of peace and nature you do not find around NY any more.

Thank you!! I'm glad this was one of your favorites. It definitely had more of a nature vibe to it. My sleep wasn't great. Mainly because of being in an unfamiliar place and the pretty regular sound of airplanes flying over, woke me up. Off and on, I had a few hours of sleep. I love camping, but sleeping is usually challenging on trips like this. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

@AlexMalikin Awesome 👌 Thank you! My kayak is an Oru Kayak, Bay ST (Black Edition). Oru Kayak has several different models with slightly different designs and a variety of uses. Make sure you research the types thoroughly and decide which might be right for you. Check their website. They have comparison charts and videos. It's important to learn about checking the weather / paddling conditions and kayaking safety. Their website is orukayak.com. As fall approaches, the water temperature will be getting colder, and the colder the water, the more dangerous kayaking can become. I wish you guys luck and let me know how things progress. 😊
