Great tips below. I sleep in a hammock, too. A closed cell pad is bulkier but will get you down to a lower temperature. To stay warmer I cover my face and neck well, and wear gloves. Having cold feet is a common complaint. People like down booties. I have never tried them. I keep a snack and a little bottle of water with me to eat/drink if I wake up. And I wear good earplugs to cut out noise if there are any people within a mile of me. I'm ok if it's just nature sounds, but people sounds keep me awake. Most of all, I am glad that it agreed with your back. Oh, great job on a simple delicious meal.

A hammock under quilt, and some loose wool socks would be good to stay warm. Sleep with your head lower than your feet in the hammock so you don't slide down.

That's good you have somewhere nice to camp nearby. The nearest legal camping to me is a 20 mile ride one way. Not all that far but it is neat to just go a few miles from home and not put in as much time. Thanks for watching and commenting.

An underquilt would solve the cold problem. I use an underquilt, and then a camping quilt instead of a sleeping bag. You would be amazed at the difference. Good little overnighter. Thanks for sharing.
@Locojoe Жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Also seems the quilt might be less fuss than trying to stay right in a bag. Thanks for the watching and the tips.

@@Locojoe when I first started bikepacking I froze for a couple of nights. But I learned through the wisdom of someone who had been hammock camping for a while. I never take a sleeping bag or pad anymore. It's a great way to go. For me at least.

Hang your hammock as high as you can manage and try lying your pad cross ways, perpendicular, rather than length of hammock ... will provide max support. Losing heat out your back side common with hammock ... try a piece of reflective tyvik or emergency blanket underneath your sleeping pad with reflected side up. Great to see fellow urban adventures on steel bikes!

Hammocking is kinda fiddly. It’s a deep rabbit hole, but the rewards are great. An under quilt, and down booties would enhance the experience a lot for you. Great channel, cheers from Chicago!

Great video on stealth camping. Very interesting way to camp. I’ll have to try and find a way to do that locally where I am at. 👍
@Locojoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I don't do it necessarily for the stealth aspect of it (although that makes it a little more exciting) but it's just a way to do a quick nearby outdoor overnight without having to ride farther to the nearest legal place to camp.

Your gear looked fine. I find those cheap blue foam pads from Walmsrt with get you down to 29, but a slifhtly deflated air mattress should do as well. Maybe 10 degrees liwer on the bag. You snacked before bed, so lotsa heat from that. Only thing i would add is 1-2 hot hands. One in your front pocket overnyour femoral artery and one chucked in your foot box will get you comfy. Sleep 10-15 % angle offnthe length of your hammock to get flat. And honestly, just doing it more. Its a big change in sleeping, but really works on multi day hikes.

Regarding your feet, I thought two pairs of socks would make my feet warmer, but the reduced circulation causes the opposite effect. If you have them, recommend wearing one pair of warm socks, otherwise you're better off with just one pair of normal socks on.

I've never been a camping guy, but the idea seems fun. You take a little protection with you? you're not in deep woods, but you never know these days. Awesome as always...
@Locojoe Жыл бұрын
Yeah I've never really been a camper either. Couple times as a kid and just a few times in my adult life those being somewhat recently. It's something I'd like to do more and get more comfortable with. Not really any protection other than the pocket knife to make my dinner. I do realize there is risk so had thought that through and was ok with it. I really felt safer here then when camping at an actual camping area at a local lake. Thanks Timothy.

Something I've been wanting to do for sometime and finally got the nerve to do it. IDK if it was clear in the video but there is no camping allowed anywhere in the city so what I was doing is illegal and somewhat risky I suppose. Be smart and safe if you do something like this. A fun way to spend an evening under the stars in a short amount of time and without having to ride miles and miles to do it. Thanks Bryan.
@bryanmacias8162 Жыл бұрын
@LocoJoe I figured your camp site was an urban campsite. We have a local campground about 30 miles away with city parks on the way. You got me thinking it would be fun to stop for breakfast and lunch at local parks and end up at the campground. Hope to have my 17 year old son come along.

Great vid. Hammock people always try and convince me that I should use a hammock. The way I toss and turn I don't think I'd like it. When it is warmer will you try it again?
@Locojoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim. I'm also one to toss and turn all night so it's kind of a mental challenge to try and stay in the one position. I would slightly roll on either side on occasion. I didn't sleep well but I don't know if the hammock played much part in that. Probably just the cold and situation mostly to blame. Even though I didn't sleep much I did spend about 7 hours in the hammock and was shocked to get out and find it didn't bother my back any more than at home in firm bed does. Yes I will try it again. I think I prefer the cold ( I would be better prepared with clothing or different bag) but I think the cool nights are gone for now..

Was better than I was expecting. I assumed I'd wake up with back pain but didn't. I'm a side sleeper and also a tosser turner so the hammock limits that. I haven't had a chance yet to try it again.

That's the way it is here also and something I took into consideration for a couple reasons. I figure they get by with it for the most part so surely I could for one night. I also made sure I was not camping too close to one as I know they are in the same area and are protective of their spots. Thanks for watching Tony.
