Old fashioned, but the yellow pages are a great resource for a list to scout. The library and local historical societies have many area history books, pamphlets about abandoned buildings. While charming, many old building also have lead, asbestos and a whole myriad of hazards. Check in with the 12 year old's in the area, they usually know all the ins and outs of old buildings and other infrastructure that no one is supposed to be in. lol Excellent video, thanks

That's an awesome idea, didn't consider the yellow pages. And yeah the local kids have great knowledge of the areas, I know I did lots of exploring like that as a kid. Appreciate the suppport!

When I first learned that about 70%+ population of the world live in or near big cities, I knew it made sense to focus on urban survival. Then it got real serious when I moved this area with a metro size of 1.8 million people. Appreciate the support. The pack is 3V Gear Posse sling pack...did a video on it a while back: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r33Zc598qMucg8U

A couple of other things you can do. Listen and smell the place. Shotgun mics are not that hard to make. A little acoustic guitar preamp with a 9v battery and a cheap microphone element in a pringles can hooked up to some earphones and if someone is inside and they're not totally inactive you'll hear them, especially if there is no wind. (also good for hearing game animals moving in the woods) Also, if there are homeless people there and you're downwind, you'll smell their latrine (if they bothered with one) and maybe their bodies. Another thing is to observe it at night and dawn. If someone is there those are the two times you might observe light or the smoke or water vapour from camp fire/stove. Night vision gear is a plus, but, there is a way to hack a fairly cheap digital camera to make an IR viewer. Not as much range as good NV gear, but, if you make the camera into an IR monocular, it could be helpful. There is a thin film or bit of coated glass or plastic between sensitive chip and the lens in a digital camera and that is an IR filter. Remove that, and you basically have an inexpensive infra-red device.

Never heard of a DIY way to make IR viewer, will have to check into that! Great point about the shotgun mics and about the homeless population, I always use any of these structures are occupied. It pays to be careful, a LEO just got shot last week investigating an abandoned house in Chattanooga.

Another good urban video, the comment's have covered all the other consideration, many I make one small suggestion a small drone/UAV.makes this task a lot easier. Atb Russ UK.

Glad you liked it! This blog post is related to another video, BUT check out the gear list with the exception of adding a map of the area you want to recon, it's a close match to being a perfect recon kit: blog.thesurvivaloutpost.com/urban-survival-tips-how-to-establish-an-observation-post/

great video but in a real SHFT Urban Recon will a lot more dangerous due to the fact more people will be looking for the samething that you are looking for Recon is a lot of fun makes you use your mind be safe and keep preparing man cant wait for your next video

10* (old building must be in the South, saw many in Raleigh-Durham area). Other situational and location awareness with critical analysis are: excellent strategic and tactical view of the region (have the high ground) .... Same as my vector diagram analysis: infrastructure, fields of view, fields of fire, red team invasive possible (low defense, minimal fields of view/fire), green team hard shelter (high defense, maximum fields of view/fire). Strategic/tactical nearby resources for: water, fire, wood fire fuel, shelter, stealth, safety, ... nearby gas stations, food resources (grocery, 7-11, hidey gardens, BOB orchard/vineyard, ...). Especially the surrounding human occupied farm land, orchards, vineyards, or personal family orange/persimmon/apple/ walnut/pecan/ xxxx xxxxx xxxx food resource. Water resources (stream, creek, river, pond, lake, backyard and spa fitness swimming pools, ).
@TheSurvivalOutpost8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, this in Nashville Metro area. Great points all around, I like to see people focus on recon basics and then expand into the more tactical aspects of doing a site survey like the points you mention. fields of fire, nearby resources, etc. I plan on doing a more in depth version in the future, bringing out those points. About the area, before I moved to Tennessee, I lived in the Raleigh/Durham and for sure saw many locations like this. Back then though it really wasn't much of interest to me. Thanks for watching!
