if you backflush the sawyer in the manner you described you will contaminate the filter. It will work to backflush but realize any bacteria you were trying to filter out of your water is now on the mouthpiece of the filter.

I would have to hike 45 miles and up over a mountain from work to home. No question that I would be spending part of one night outside. Here is what my get home bag has in it. I have a DD ultra lite Hammock system: hammock, line, tree huggers, detached bug net, small tarp, at 3 lbs. For hammock Matt I sewed 4 Wally World insulated foil hot cold bags minus the hard plastic handles onto a piece of polyester material and attached some Paracord to the end of the doubled material so I could attach it to the head of my hammock. The rough cut edges on the foil can be sealed with clear packaging tape. Make sure you tape each foil bag section to each other prior to sewing it all onto the polyester fabric. The fabric supports the foil and stops it from tearing, and the fabric supports the whole Matt from sliding down in the hammock when you get in it or when you move around. The tied Matt will move from side to side but you can get it under your shoulders and butt again. Lay only on the material side facing you, not the foil side Up, or you will tear up the foil under the weight of your body when you get in or move around. The tarp can act as an under blanket and to block the wind if not raining. Take some paracord and gather and tie each end of the tarp to just past each end of the hammock. I just need 4-5 hours of sleep, and we have plenty of trees to take shelter in on the way home, so the hammock is just right. I would also pack two 20 oz water bottles and Sawyer mini as we have a natural water source as well as stores along the way, and a bottle of Gatorade, Esbit stove, 6-8 tabs, lighter, GI Cup, Ramen, cliff bar, instant hot choc and coffee, 2 protein bars, a fork, and small bandana,. I will hydrate with one to two liters of water at work prior to setting off. I would wear a Togg frog Rain jacket and pants for stormy or winter conditions which is stored in my vehicle. I would also pack a thin light weight wool or fleece sweater, a wool or fleece watch cap, and two pair of dry socks with two food lion bags to put each bag over each foot and sock to trap warmth at night, especially if my sneakers became wet during the hike. I would also pack a Nylon rain Jacket for rain or to trap heat under or over another garment, and very small flash light and SAK, and a tiny package of OTC meds, 6 wet wipes. I would also pack three additional 15 round 9 mm mags for my Glock 19, tactical blade, a can of pepper spray for people or dogs and small binos. Hopefully the binos will help me see trouble and avoid it, like riots, road blocks, etc. I don’t need a map. But I do have a battery bank / flashlight that can charge my phone. Appropriate gloves for the season for tasks or warmth. I always have a ball cap and sun glasses in my vehicle. If the temps drop and I need warmth at night I will bring my woobie with an SOL double sized mylar heat sheet pinned to it. Place a small piece of clear packaging to the mylar before safety pinning it to the woobie on each corner. That’s as light and as compact as I can make it.

Great stuff your shelter setup sounds a lot like mine. Have you hiked this route yet? I would suggest modifications to the food supply especially in summer and carry. Ore water depending the availability of water on the route. To give you context I force marched 15 miles yesterday in 5.30 hrs over flat paved ground. I ran through nearly 3 liters of water due to heat and burned 14006 calories. My two day get home bag weighs less than 20lbs and my overall distance to travel is 43 miles. I would suggest cutting weight as much as possible and maybe investing in a blow out kit or a more robust general first aid kit that includes moleskin and antichaf balm. Keep up the good work you may need this sooner than you think

hey glad to see your back. for water filtration the sawyer is great because the amount it can filter. bit if your in a more urban area you should look for a filter that can filter out metals and chemicals also on top of the standard filtration of bacteria and germs

I know, it's a 24hr. get home bag, however, where I live the ability to quickly use a small could be a great help. Ten bonus points for you and a gold star for the day for including a Silcox key. Great review on a great pack. Wish I would have seen this before I bought a more tactical one. I would only say you should keep your trauma gear easier to access. Seconds count with severe wounds. That is why you see many kits where tourniquet is on out side of IFAK.

The only location for it right now is in the main compartment, but I'm considering adding an attachment point so I can "hang" the IFAK inside that compartment where I'm keeping my water bottle and rain gear. When I want 'covert' I tend to go with Kelty. The main disadvantage is none of them really have CCW built in. The main advantages to Kelty, they have a nice well-known civilian logo, generally no tactical functions that scream "guy with a gun", and they're pretty durable. If I need CCW, I have smaller bags for this purpose. I alternate between an EMDOM Baker Street and a SoTech Mission Go Bag, for CCW, depending on how much extra stuff I need to carry. The former holds more, but things can get lost in the many pockets.

Great video! Very thoughtful, well-organized set up. In terms of things to add, someone pointed out the value of an ultralight stove recently, which I had not previously considered for a GHB. My own recommendation would be weather radio and a walkie talkie/two-way radio if you have loved ones you need to coordinate with.

Hey great video.. not sure if anyone addressed this but there are some great scanner apps for your phone. spend some time searching around to find out which works best in your area with your type of phone. its one less thing to carry but may drain your battery. also as far as concealed carry packs you have the usual maxpedition (i have the sitka), 3vgear (i have the posse and the vellox ii) and cannae is a new-ish brand that i believe has concealed carry. I don't own a cannae bag yet but its on my list.

The Sitka is a small bag, much smaller than yours with the dimensions at 15 x 8 x 3-Inch for the main pack and i've seen it listed at 10liters give or take. There is the 3vGear Outlaw (i have the posse i mispoke and edited it above) that is a "cheaper" version of the Sitka. The Sitka has been discontinued for a new line which is probably for the best. The strap loosens all the time, the bag is uncomfortable if you pack it relatively full and it doesn't hold a lot to begin with. I use it for a lunch bag and minor EDC with a few odds and ends (medicine, flashlight, basics like that). As far as my lunch goes its either a sandwich/canned good/or a frozen meal (pick one not all 3) along with a soda, a basic 16 oz water and a few snacks and it's full. Only upside is there's a spot on the outside for a reusable coffee/water bottle. The 3vGear Posse is also able to switch the strap to either shoulder depending on which you want to use, maxpedition doesn't allow this. I am guessing the outlaw would do the same. If you don't have the best shoulders (like myself) its not a great bag to use. I have only had it for the summer so i am thinking this winter it will be more comfortable with more clothes on padding the shoulder. Although the material is top notch even for made in China. Something i would buy again? definitely not.

I doubt that you can get good seal to use squeeze bottle with cap to actually back wash the filter and the syringe is also good for irrigation of wounds. Also your fire kit matches and lighters not good in cold wet wind. Nice video and one thing you could do is use condor pack insert to put survival stuff in to make your edc become ghb. See preparedmind101 video about it.

Great points...I tested with three different caps, was finally able to get a good seal with the last one I tested with. When trying to start fires in windy conditions, you got to have some kind of wind break not only to get fire started, but to sustain your fire or your spend your life stoking it. Thanks for the great videos! I have a question and a suggestion: What brand is the luminous compass in the video? I like it's size and functionality. One thing that I would add to your kit is a pair of leather gloves. I think their functionality would be invaluable and they could reduce annoying and possibly dangerous cuts and scrapes on your hands. Just my two cents. Keep up the good work!

I have a defunct Marine Corp. medical bag in my truck that has everything else for getting home. I am a firefighter/First Responder, so I have the EMS go bag too. Gotta save my back.

I like the Fatboy Versipack, but it is a little shy on space and I would like more molle webbing outside to clip a 2-way radio, F.D. pager, and a Ka-Bar TDI blade. I've bought a number of bags in past, but but I keep going back to the Fatboy, despite my negative comments. Maybe should have gone with the Jumbo Versipack, which has a lg. pouch for a water bottle or other gear. They come in less tactical colors, so you aren't going to draw attention if you're walking through the city. One more thing I will say, you get what you pay for! Trying to save a buck by buying the crap on eBay isn't worth it. And, if I'm truly going to be hiking any distance, I do want a backpack like yours, not shoulder bag. Keep up the good work on your videos. Great job.

Yeah if I was closer to home on a regular basis and didn't carry the laptop, I would probably go smaller like the Versipack. I agree 100% about not skimping on gear quality. The cheapest I've bought is 3V Gear which isn't terrible quality, decent enough but not suited for hard use. Gear like Blackhawk, 5.11, etc have never let me down. Now I will buy mil surp on Ebay, but not civilian packs/bags that I don't know much about the company or quality. Thanks again for the support!

Sounds like a little challenging...having no idea of your living arrangements or budget, if I had to bounce around from state to state, I would have a large duffel bag for my clothes, toiletries, etc. Then I would have a full size pack like my ExoMtn Gear 3500 to store all my survival gear, including a week food supply. Then I would have a small EDC bag with my electronics in it, edc tools, etc. Of course I'm assuming you have a vehicle..

The Survival Outpost you need to be the first to do a video on an urban bag in major city. For example, living in downtown Chicago, you have lighters, dry foods, and water at literally every block. All this can be bought at the moment of an emergency with cash. So if an emergency does strike, shouldn't your get home bag have more rare items?

I know it depends on the area you live in,but at least in urban/suburban areas(in my opinion)i don't get it why get home not 72 hr.bug out bags.People carry survival knives,various way to start a fire among other item's,,the whole idea to me,is to get home as quickly as possible, not to start a fire and possibly hunker down for a nights stay.Unless it's a grid down and you're a minimum of a 2 day or more walk,even in perfect(where no one bothers you) doesn't make since.Your getting home not bugging out.

It does depend on the area, but overall a beefed up EDC kit can get you home no problem. Or just EDC kit + extras you keep in your vehicle.

Great video. On the subject of things to add, I'd look at getting the following (just my suggestions and my opinion, everyone's different): *1)* Some sort of tarp (as even in an urban area you may not find shelter already in place). *2)* A HAM-type radio like the Baofeng UV-5R or BF-F8/F8+; it serves as a weather radio, police/EMS scanner (check the internet for your local frequencies), and a two-way radio in one, plus if you have a HAM license you can communicate on other frequencies with people across the country in the case of a natural or otherwise disaster). *3)* A better water filter. Don't get me wrong, the Sawyer Mini is awesome, but it doesn't filter out some things like metals and some chemicals. Take a look at the Renovo Trio filter. It's just a tad bigger than the Sawyer, but it filters out pretty much everything lol. *4)* Some sort of easy-to-prepare meal, like MREs, Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry, Mary Jane's Farm, etc. Just in case you get stuck for longer than planned, a full meal or two is a good supplement to those snacks you already have. *5)* Small-form-factor gas fuel stove, like the ones by MSR or Olicamp, along with a small canister of fuel. Since this is a more urban-oriented bag setup, a wood stove is pretty much out of the question. Also, the fuel canister can fit inside the SS cup mentioned below to take up less room. *6)* A stainless steel water bottle or canteen, along with a nesting cup/lid setup. Any water bottle is a good water bottle, but a stainless steel one is best. That along with the nesting cup, lid, and stove will allow you to cook the aforementioned meals, along with the ability to boil water in case you run out of the purification tablets, clog the filter, or God forbid, both.

32 oz Nalgene or 40 oz Klean Kanteen fits just about perfectly in a GSI Glacier cup/pot. A 64 oz Klean Kanteen fits perfectly in the Olicamp LT or XTS pot. And last but not least, the most expensive option (only because it's made from titanium and comes as a set with the canteen, cup, and lid): Heavy Cover Titanium Canteen Mess Kit. It's like $150 for the kit, but I'm sure you could find a coupon code somewhere lol.

Kelty Redwing 32 is a good pack, with a price point of $99.95 (amzn.to/2D7JZQe) If you can find it, the Kelty 3500 MAP is an excellent choice, choice of SF guys. Average price is $110-145. I was wondering a couple of things. What is your pack weight? How many liters was that pack? Amazon doesn't know when or if the pack will ever be available again and it doesn't show up on the Blackhawk site. Based on this review, I wouldn't be impressed or interested in this pack, but everyone has different preferences. For instance, that first back panel you opened is a joke. There's no depth. Maybe slide some folded trash bags and a survival blanket in there?

I'd add some toilet paper. Even in a non-emergency scenario you can stop at a public rest room and find it out of T.P., it's happened to me before. A painters dust mask could come in handy if the situation is similar to 9-11 in NYC or a forest fire, either could be putting bad things in the air.

Not disrespecting the hard work you are doing but I believe that title should be changed. I see nothing in your environment that constitutes "urban". Good usage of tools in the admin pouch. Not sure how I feel about the laptop and your sidearm in the same pocket and can you access the the weapon in 3 seconds and under (rule of three) and where was your second magazine? Energy, good advice. I would recommend a bank with much higher Mah per hour. Steiner, OUTSTANDING choice. Always have a MedKit, great advice. Always have more than one tourniquet. It's a very much urban environment, about 500 meters from my position is a large 4 lane highway. The area I filmed in is an abandoned amphitheater that has been overtaken by nature. About energy, I have a Dark Energy 10,000 mah battery bank but chose the smaller Anker to save space. Can't go wrong with Steiner...ever :D I agree about having an extra tourni! Lots of questions :) First disclaimer old video, skills have evolved #1 You don't need to constantly back flush your filter unless you are sucking in water with debris. Why carry it then? Prefilter to remove debris first. #2 Not sure what you mean about the cap #3 Yes now I carry more on my person #4 Because it doesn't conceal well under a t-shirt and I was demonstrating/testing how that CCW compartment worked. You have a good set up, yet I'm a little confused. (Nahh not really, just being provocative and thinking out loud. ) In the video you mention its a 24 hour bag. In the comments you say its set up to get you home from work which is 2 hours away. Is it a 24 hour bag, or a 2 hour bag? If its a 2 hour bag, do you really need the fire lighting ability? What scenario would you need to light a fire in that time frame? (Me I carry fire lighting kit with me every where I go, even if its to the local shops.) If reality dictates its a 24 hour get home bag, then that covers the times you might be further away from home or something has happened which means its going to take a long time to get home. In that case I would I would add a large plastic garbage bag, pair of gloves, some emergency money, coins and notes ( access a vending machine ), tin cup, some more food, and something to make a hot drink or two, scarf and woolen vest. During that time you would need to factor in some sleep / rest and the bag would make for a rough shelter, temp ground sheet, sleeping bag, poncho etc. We have a get home bag in each of our cars. While my wife works 15 minutes from home and I do local voluntary work its there to get us home no matter where we are. That includes the time their may be a big traffic jam on the freeway because of an accident and we can at least make a hot drink and have a feed.

Now that you mention it hahaha, yes I can see where that would seem contradictory. My thoughts go like this - the GHB is designed for a max of 24hrs without resupply. Sure it can only take 2hrs to get home, but it could easily take longer depending on the situation. Building the bag out for 24hrs giving me a bit of breathing room. If it was only 2 hrs I was concerned about, I'd probably not even have a bag, just first line gear including a jacket.
