Gen 1 was useless in urban environments. Unfortunately I got it after watching other moto vloggers using it, without realizing how the UX would be useless in cities and towns. The new one seems to fix this and other issues (e.g. gpx routes didn't work in my local streets) I have with Beeline, but the increasing reliance on the proprietary app (when it's shut down, the thing becomes a paper weight) and the subscription model creeping in, I'm extra skeptic about it and I'll probably pass. A good mount and a phone with ANY navigation app one might prefer is way more flexible

I completely agree with the app shut down possibility. I think I will buy it anyway but I am a bit scared. However I don't see what they could do to solve this problem.

I agree with the Gen 1 being useless in urban environments. I had one and even got Beeline to send me a replacement as the one I had kept sending me in wrong directions (I was trialing it on roadways I already knew). Still no improvement. In the end I just went with a communication system on my helmet. Still not the perfect solution but a lot better.

Nice vid. I'm with ThinkBike Marshals, and we regularly escort/marshal long-distance cycling trips here in South Africa. I have been using the Moto I for the past 3 years, and the simple arrow/distance to the next turn is an outstanding feature (we have enough to do while herding cats down a busy roadway 🙂). I got the Moto II as a replacement (my Moto I got drowned along with my bike - don't ask) and will use it for a long-distance (300km) ride this weekend. From what I've seen thus far during limited use, the mini-map is an improvement (I still miss the arrow, though, as it works for me, but admittedly, it isn't universally favoured among the marshals) - any chance of getting that as an option? Our routes are planned and recce'd beforehand (we typically have ~200 cyclists taking part, so we cannot afford to foot-fault en route), and we import our event routes as tracks (instead of routes) in gpx format into Beeline. Hence, there is a preference for the arrow interface. Also, run a dedicated GPS while marshalling (I know I need help) and the Moto I unit has proven to be spot-on - my preferred nav interface. In a follow-up post, if anyone is interested, I will provide feedback on how the Moto II performs.

Why not mount your Apple or Samsung/Pixel watch on the handlebars instead of using this device? I'd think Apple and Google Maps navigation would be better than Beeline's app and you wouldn't have to spend an extra $220 if you already have a watch. Even if you don't have one already a used watch costs the same or less than a Beeline Moto 2.

@@FunWithAJ I think that the 14 hours was for the newer model wasn't it? The original has a 30 hour battery life. I guess it's because it isn't always backlit, whereas the new one is. Unlike many comments here I dislike the concept of a phone mount. Having it in your face takes the whole disconnection from smartphone. I just like to put my music and directions via headphones so this is very nice for me. That way, I can keep my clipons clean and tidy and still have navigation with a map. Price though for it is very steep. Too steep. Not to mention the audacity to have a subscription based for audio navigation. I'll pass. And will it even work well in urban areas? The best thing they could do for Beeline Moto 2 is to provide the 3D model of the mount that comes with it so people can 3D print better mounts or attachments that can improve the safety of the existing mount. Those rubber bands are garbage and the clamp they offer will only be viable for bikes that have almost nothing on the handlebars since you have to take everything off to get them on.

You HAVE to have a phone for the Beeline device to work. It's an external screen for navigation, and not a nav device by itself. You do NOT need to pay a monthly fee, but they've added a few features behind a paywall -- like correlating voice navigations prompts -- but it's not required.

No offense meant but not the best review you guys have dropped. All i got from this is that the gen 1 was useless for city riding and more enduro suited. Gen 2 is slightly better screen size and improvements but thats it. Also you mentioned a negative of phones being used for navigation is that they eat thru battery life. Doesnt this still require phone gps connection and eat threw the same battery life or does it use it's own gps? If they survive to make a gen 3 i hope it becomes a full fledged gps device. No need for phone unless youre doing an ota update.

Real long term review of a Mk1 black plastic version. Mine stopped working (no longer charges or switches on, screen completely blank) after 26 months. No way of repairing or warranty at this point, so a write off. When it was working it paired to your phone and needed a good 4G / 5G reception, due to that at times it recomputes the route on the ride. This is a problem because it’s not just out for a few seconds but can be up to a minute or two and therefore you are riding blind at these moments. Screen readout is quite small and therefore you need good eyesight. Good points are that it is small, can attach on the handlebars and it is easily placed into your pocket when you park up. Battery life was very good and lived up to the 30 hour factory claim. There is no monthly charge on top of the original purchase price but you do need to consider the overall 2 year shelf life.

Yeah.... no.. its a product none of us really need, at a price none of us wanna pay... garmin and tom tom sales died with smartphones, its a bold play to start making them for the casual user when they arent needed.. I see one reason to use it, moped thieves like to rip phones from motorbikes and probably wouldn't see this.. which reminds me, RoadRash chains would sell well...

A poor man's alternative is to re-purpose an old phone, put on the Beeline app (free), get a phone mount (cheapie Quadlock clones are 10 quid). I've tried doing just that, but I'm old fashioned and just want enjoy the ride and do without any distractions. If I was doing an adventure ride, then I'd probably get a rugged tablet and running Guru Maps (free and well featured), but of course the expense is in the rugged tablet and the good ones are quite pricey, plus the mount kit required.

If Bluetooth, will the headset in the helmet and this device work at the same time? 3. How quickly does the device charge? 10% to 80% , 10 minutes or 10 hours? 4. How does the device behave when overheated? 5. Will the device work if I don't use the manufacturer's app? Just connected via Bluetooth/wifi to the phone + google maps. 6. What exactly does the device show on the map? Does it show the exit from the highway or the exit number and lane? So much empty talk... a well-deserved dislike.
