If you stopped and looked carefully, there are rabbits everywhere. Coney comes from Coinin, Irish for rabbits. St Patrick visited and was given rabbit stew - offended, he cursed the place with 1,000's of rabbits. You also missed a big rock which St Patrick leaped onto for refuge when he was caught out by the tide. The tide never rises above the rock because he blessed it. Coney Island New York is named after the island.
@UrbanVanlife3 ай бұрын
We did see a lot of rabbits and I knew it got its name from the Irish for rabbit and that St Patrick had visited but didn’t know the rest so thank you always good to learn something new!!! (This is Emma by the way, Neil doesn’t do looking into history) 😂😂😂
@Granuaile13 ай бұрын
Rabbits were only introduced to Ireland in12th century by the Normans so St Patrick muscling in on the act again! The Irish word 'coinín' actually comes from the Norman French word 'connil' which comes from the Latin word for rabbit - 'cuniculus'. The hare is native to Ireland so maybe some confusion there.

@@UrbanVanlife I haven't been there for a while. Was it this year you visited? The last time I was there the rabbit population had completely gone as far as I could see. Previously the rabbit population was numerous and well established. The landowner had put about the story they had all been killed by poison which is bs as there are cattle there and you would have to dose the whole island with poison to do that. I know about hunting and control of rabbits. Someone, guess who, illegally introduced Viral Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease of which the new (possibly genetically altered) variant has a more or less 100% fatality. I'm surprised and delighted some survived. This disease, imported from China to control rabbits, has been deliberately spread in other places by farmers and golf clubs. What they probably didn't realise is that this disease kills hares, both Irish and British. Hares are now extinct in many areas of the country. I have tried bringing this up with Wildlife Services and was basically ignored. The farming lobby is powerful in this country. Don't be fooled by the vocal patriotism which often doesn't go further than cheering the national team and singing 'rebel' songs. Unfortunately there are many, not just in Ireland, who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

There’s a road under the sand on the south side of the pillars. It was built some time in the 19th century following the highest point on the sand. The pillars were added after the lady who lived in the big old house overlooking the strand witnessed a girl being inundated by the incoming tide and drowned. They mark the line of the road but the actual reason they were built was so you could climb them if you were trapped. They’re never fully covered even with the highest tides.
