That's half the story, the CIA knew the Russians were copping the space shuttle plans from the national archive, so they switched them, and ruined the Russian space shuttle on it's first flight. We only glued the tiles on the back side, but on the switched plans, the CIA showed the tiles glued on all sides. This gluing allowed heat to make it's way up the tiles on re-entry, and warp the Russian shuttles aluminum skin. No more shuttle flights....comrade

@@KypraH_MaMaeB It's been pretty conclusively proven that you guys did a pretty damn good job. However I think in this case, the Soviets might have been better off to go with a different design. I never liked that we used something so volatile.

By any account I've seen, the Buran orbiter was a fantastic shuttle. Its automation capabilities were very impressive at the time. The Soviets were never really thrilled with having a shuttle program - they just did it because they were scared the US could use one to drop a nuke quickly so they wanted something similar. They really had no other use for it. And to your friend's point, it was far, far more expensive to operate than their typical Soyuz crafts. May your friend rest in peace
@orionbarnes1733 Жыл бұрын
I'm a huge space nerd, so I'd like to provide some extra information that I feel is important. Specifically, as far as I can tell, the shuttle you entered was almost certainly 11F35 2K, which was likely going to be named "Burya" (Russian for "storm"). The other shuttle in that hanger is OK-MT, a test article that was used for numerous projects but may have been planned for a flight where it would ultimately burn up in the atmosphere. The space shuttle you entered was designed to go to space, and was constructed with the intent of being a fully functional spacecraft. I cannot express how incredible it must feel to see these two Space Shuttles in person, I saw the launch of an American one (Discovery on flight STS-131) and later was able to see the spacecraft up close. It's a shame these two shuttles were just left to rot in a building, they should be put on display. Sadly, the Soviet shuttle Buran, the only of these three to fly to space, was destroyed in a hanger collapse, and I wish more people would push for these two to be protected from the same fate. Hopefully this video will encourage Roscosmos to move them, or at the very least draw attention to it.

The Russian security primarily monitors the site for local Kazakhs scavenging and selling off material from the site, but are occasionally catching tourists, too. They are often seen using black vehicles, checking the Buran hangar 3 times per day (09:30-10:30, 12:00-13:00, and 14:30-15:30) walking the perimeter and hanging out for an hour on each visit. They have firearms and dogs available to them, but are rarely seen used at the abandoned sites compared to active areas of the cosmodrome. They rarely check the Energia-M rocket tower, but you can watch them from above in either building if you're attentive to roadways and/or have an additional person in your group who can take on the duty. This place is very challenging to reach, but by no means impossible, and absolutely worthwhile. Having been myself, I recommend it to anyone of capability, as you'll have an incredible experience and impressive story to tell thereafter.

Actually another Buran Spaceshuttle still exists today. And it even completed many flights in the atmosphere. It was some kind of "test spaceshuttle". Also there is a less complicated way to see it. You can see it in a big air- and spacecraft museum in Speyer, Germany!

I've watched this vid a hundred times, never fails to cause the hairs on my neck to stand, provoke goosebumps, and even break a tad of sweat. The Buran's front shots are like grinning reptilian skulls, the drone shots bring out the look of a flying creature entombed in some kind of "Valley Of The Kings" environment, permanently dead yet still very much alive as it rests in the desert-dusted peace of its former glory, all in company with the haunting background music as the drone seems to bow its head in grace to the ghostly-looking face and still wings, those wings still reaching out to fly, a flight of Eternity.

When I see the abandoned Buran and facilities I just think of the cost, the time and the effort put into it all. It was state of the art at the time. Remember, on its test flight it took off, went into orbit, made re-entry, flew down and landed ALL BY ITSELF. Fully automated mission of a huge complex orbiter with up to that point only simulated flight characteristics. It was seriously impressive demonstration, this was the late 1980s, that's difficult to do now let alone 30 years ago! it must have cost the Soviet Union a fortune to build and they just shelved the whole thing. Their economy was so broken, the Chernobyl accident was possibly the final straw. The cost of that virtually bankrupted them and hastened the end of the Cold War.

@muya Metal .While the outsides look rather similar (mainly as the two craft had the exact same payload specifications), the insides are completely different, not to even mention it's way of attaining orbit. I was unable to find anything about Buran almost burning up - especially as it had a reentry profile much improved over the American Shuttles, so that the temperatures were hundreds of degrees (Celsius) lower. gizmodo.com/when-you-look-at-it-with-the-launch-system-all-similar-1710892741?IR=T

muya Metal Well, pretty much about the US Space Shuttle was public knowledge already (as NASA was and is a publicly funded organization), and it's not that the Soviets had no experience in space flight, so... you are over-dramatizing a bit imo and afaik.
@osiris86377 жыл бұрын
GiACOMO271 It did work but was only launched once in 1998 (March I think) it was supposedly better then the US counter part and not all of the design/s was/were stolen. It was obviously to compete with the US's shuttle and out of fear that they may be using theirs as a base for a delivery system for space based weaponry or to transport materials to the moon for a moon base.

I actually watched the Buran Launch. It was pretty spectacular and looks so much alike the space shuttle orbiter by NASA. minus the Rocket Engines. Launched on a EFT and 4 Boosters instead of like NASA’s 2 boosters. From what I’ve read it was a pretty successful program but with the fall of the Soviet Union the funding was cut. And the Soyuz became the workhorse for Russia and space travel.

Russian copy American shuttles and technology as always.
@bobjoe82444 жыл бұрын
@@jaime9014 Surprisingly, it was actually better than the real space shuttle. It could carry more into space, could fly/land itself unmanned, and I believe it was safer because it used liquid fueled engines.

@@bobjoe8244 what they claim and reality are always different. Also, it's an obvious copy of design.. so they saved billions in research by stealing from the original.
@arrant6384 жыл бұрын
@@kennethr2906 You write some kind of nonsense. The laws of physics are the same, and the fact that it looks like a Space Shuttle doesn't make it the same. Borrowing ideas is not worth denying, but it is stupid to blame copying. The modern prototype of the Dreamchaser shuttle looks the same as the Soviet projects of the 60s-70s - Spiral and Bor. But for some reason, the United States is allowed, but the rest of the world is not. I am silent about the technologies, personnel and data that the West received after the collapse of the USSR. The collapse of the USSR was a big sale. For example, the famous Pentium series of processors is named after the Soviet engineer who developed the Pentium architecture for Intel. This person in the USSR worked on Elbrus processors. This is one of many examples. Buran was launched into space without a crew, and it returned in unmanned mode, which was inaccessible to the Shuttle. This project should not be judged as independent. It was created in tandem with the Energia rocket, which was a more important project. What is important here is not the very fact of Buran's appearance, but the fact that the USSR was able to create it. This project has created many jobs. 1200 enterprises of the USSR worked on the project. Thanks to this, new technologies appeared that could be used in other projects and industries. And technology is the most important factor for dominance. With this project, the USSR challenged the dominance of the United States in the world.
@kennethr29064 жыл бұрын
@@arrant638 didn't read more than the first 2 lines of your rambling... I stand by what I said, They did COPY the shuttle... didn't say it was a bad idea... they obviously improved it since they didn't have to spend billions on the design....🖕
