@@passionateherbs8183 I, as kind of a joke, made my dad a bucket washer a couple of years ago. Two 5 gallon buckets and a toilet plunger. Drill holes in the rubber plunger end and holes in the sides and bottom of one bucket. "Holey" bucket goes inside of solid bucket, little bit of detergent and water, top on hole in lid for plunger handle, up and down on the plunger. To "spin", hang "holey" bucket up on a rope and twist. Back up! It'll spin and force the water out. Or...you could set the "holey" bucket on a couple of bricks, put solid bucket inside "holey" and sit on the top. It forces water out the holes. Like I said, I made it as a joke, but dad loved it!!!!!

Budget 5 gals/day per person for water for cooking, drinking, hygeine and sanitation. We hauled every drop of water we needed for 3yrs. 5 gal/ day per person is what you need to budget for drinking, cooking and sanitation. Sanitation is critical. That includes using dish water to flush the toilet into the septic. Hygeine is also critical, especially in a hot climate where tic bites can quickly degrade your overall health. They don't even need to carry a disease. A tic bite in a sensitive area can lead to a UTI and death. Also... you forgot bleach. Bleach is critical. For sanitation and storing water long term.

If you stockpile rectangular boxes of facial tissue, you can also use the tissues as toilet paper. And those rectangular boxes pack together tighter than those rolls of toilet paper, saving on storage space. The empty pasteboard boxes that held facial tissues can be broken up and used as fuel in a rocket stove. I like it when an item in my stockpile has more than one use. Stockpile bamboo sporks or wooden chopsticks or biodegradable eating utensils made of cellulose instead of disposable plastic forks, spoons and knives. The used sporks and chopsticks and cellulose utensils can be allowed to dry overnight and then burned as fuel in a rocket stove. This means two uses for the utensils and less non-biodegradable plastic in the trash. Remember, in a prolonged emergency, there will not be trash pick-up. If you have only biodegradable items in your trash, you can either put it in a compost pile to rot or bury it in your backyard to enrich the soil. And you will want compost and enriched soil if vegetable gardening is part of your survival plan. Even the cooled ashes from burning wood and cardboard in your rocket stove can be sprinkled on your gardening patch to enrich the soil. Try to avoid generating plastic waste as much as you can. Choose food packaged in metal cans or in glass jars for your stockpile when that is an option. Those empty metal cans and glass jars can be repurposed. Remove the top and bottom of a metal can, use tin snips to cut along the seam, flatten and you have a metal shingle. Have enough mental shingles and you can put a roof on a shed made of salvaged pallet wood and fence boards. Some glass jars of the right size for canning lids can be reused for homemade jams and jellies. Glass jars with cleaned screw top lids can be reused to store dry foods or small metal items such as nails and washers and will keep out moisture and rodent pests. Sunlight will not degrade glass which makes glass a better choice than plastic for storing items in garages or porches or other spaces exposed to sunlight. Plastic jars exposed to UV light and summer heat will turn hard and brittle and then will shatter. Learn to reduce waste and to repurpose as much as possible now because you never know when a disaster will strike and shut down the supply line and end trash pick-up for weeks, months or maybe years.

Excellent suggestions. I don't live in MN, so I make observations: 1. water - it was ridiculous that people stored small plastic bottles of water. If you have the larger container and a filtration device or ability to heat water, you never have to rotate the same. 2. bread - no time to gather wood, have an open fire, wash up, bake. Simple to make hardtack now, store, and not waste time and resources after shtf. 3. canned foods. layer the concept. Canned foods that can be eaten without cooking or heating. you don't need much animal protein. It is tiresome to read about having a 50 pound bag of beans. Once you open the bag, you have to protect the contents from spoilage/animals. You spend time preparing the beans. If you have cans of cooked beans, you can option not to cook. If you cook, it will be small quantities protected from spoilage and the cans can be reused. 4. Generator. Got rid of mine. Propane. Propane grill, propane stove, propane lantern. When you are past 70 years old and have to keep rotating gasoline, good luck to you. 5. Batteries. The quality rechargeables can be recharged 500-1500 times. Make sure that you have chargers that automatically cut off. I know the jazz about recharging after shtf. Solar is not there yet. If you only have one flashlight and two walkie talkies that take 4 batteries each and without discipline, the units will not function after three days, you have to have a lot of batteries. Rechargeables generally do not leak in storage. Alkalines do leak. The amount of necessary batteries is almost astronomical. Eventually, some electricity will become available and that is why you want to have a battery charger for AA, AAA, 18650.

People always say toilet paper with the assumption that they will be able to use it as they normally do by flushing it down a toilet. But, in a dire breakdown of society situation, there will be no sewage works to remove the waste as normal. The waste disposal companies only have so many chemicals to treat waste and purify water. The system will back up as more and more people use their toilet paper and it's not being processed at the other end. People need to think about how they are going to safely dispose of their own bodily waste.

Plus it does not have any of those toxin chemicals in it that we saturate our parts with. "Who gives a Crap" was cheaper than the other bamboo vendors. It's a little more costly than regular white paper but it last longer and is healthier. I even take a roll to work (is that TMI??) Good luck.

I store a year's worth of garden seeds (things I specifically grow) sealed in a mylar bag in the freezer. You can store several of these sets of seeds -- right now in fall is a good time to pick up packets of seeds on sale at Walmart and Tractor Supply and various other stores that only carry them seasonally. If nothing else, you can always use them to barter with. Also, when I make tomato sauce and strain out the seeds, I put a big lump of the seeds and pulp in a baggie in the freezer. All you have to do in spring is mix the pulp with a little garden soil or compost and you will have tomato plants galore. Easiest way to start tomato plants that I know of. It's fine to store canned food, but what will you do when that runs out? Even if you live in the city, you can have pots on a balcony or raise a few veg in "flower beds" around your house. My mother always grew food along with her flowers in perimeter beds around our small rental houses: always tomato plants, alpine and regular strawberries as ground cover, raspberries along a fence line, leafy bush beans amongst the flowers, and lots of edible nasturtiums (all parts of the plant are edible, including the seeds). She also always grew mint for tea, and various other herbs that smelled good and were used in cooking. I grow a lot of lavender, which I bundle and dry and put in my linen and clothes closets to repel moths. Lavender also is edible. All of those are beautiful additions to any yard or patio and neighbors don't necessarily recognize them as "food," so it's food hidden in plain sight.

I suggest plastic silverware and plastic or paper plates and bowls to save on the water. Toilet paper plugs, baby wipes, anything medical. Ammo for hunting if need be. Soap. On and on. French press, manual coffee grinder. Seal coffee in mason jars. Can also seal water in mason jars. What ever you buy in plastic containers put in mason jars and seal . Go through you cupboards and look at what you can store in sealed mason jars.

I recently replaced all my flashlights and lanterns with USB chargeable units. That way, I don't need to store piles of batteries that have a shelf life. For the devices that use batteries that I didn't want to replace, I replaced the batteries with USB rechargeable batteries. My USB devices can be charged easily with solar panels or during a short generator run, using a USB bulk charger with 40 ports. If I had to conserve fuel and run the generator for only a few hours, I can keep the refrigerators cool and charge up all the USB lights for the evening. Even my GMRS radios can be charged by USB. The USB batteries have more stamina than their chemical counterparts and can be stored for longer periods. Something to think about for your planning.
