I grew up in Soviet Union listening to Uriah Heep. It was that little gulp of fresh air that held us together. Worn magnetic tapes recorded ten fold from bootlegged LPs that were smuggled across the Iron Curtain.

He was the wizard of a thousand kings And I chanced to meet him one night wandering He told me tales and he drank my wine Me and my magic man, kind of feeling fine He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire And as he spoke, I felt a deep desire To free the world of it's fear and pain And help the people to feel free again Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts 'Cause then I know we'd find we're not so far apart Everybody's got to be happy, everyone should sing For we know the joy of life, the peace that love can bring So spoke the wizard, in his mountain home The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone And I will dream of my magic night And a million silver stars that guide me with their light

That voice! Never to be matched again in Rock. I first heard Byron sing this song when I was very young and I was mesmerised from the first note. I learnt to sing rock by listening to Byron's vocals. I admire Hensley's incredible songwriting - numbers that were scaled for a big Rock sound and that mean something. Today I am old and the memories of covering some of their songs are pure gold. This is the greatest rock band of all time.

We’re you with us back in those days? I was a teenager. It was magical. The music. It took us places. It was never supposed to end, but sadly, it did. We grew old. Some have gone on. But every time I pause and listen once again to the music, I hear the Wizard. Somewhere in the recess of our spirit, he still lives. If you weren’t there, I’m sorry for you. It was spiritual. Long live the Wizard.

But I will tell you who is a phenom lover of science fiction, lead singer Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult. I am sure he knows and loves Tanith if you say she is special. He uses science fiction writers for a number of their lyrics. You want to talk about another hard rock phenom along with Uriah (where the critics and a majority of hard rock fans missed the boat), listen to the album "Secret Treaties" alone.

Ahhh......The 70's. A time when our clothing was highly flammable (polyester), Barber shops and hair salons were dropping like flies, every home had ONE (1) phone and it was bolted to the kitchen wall. Socializing wasn't a solitary event, the best memories could be made walking a few blocks down the street and no matter where you went, the sound track to our young lives was always being recorded. Music EVERYWHERE!! And MY personal favorite..... I was dating the son of a preacher, who was probably the biggest stoner in the neighborhood:) (The son, not the preacher) LOL.

He was the wizard of a thousand kings And I chanced to meet him one night wandering He told me tales, and he drank my wine Me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire And as he spoke, I felt a deep desire To free the world from it's fear and pain And help the people to feel free again Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts 'Cause then I know we'd find that we're not so far apart

Ah, the classic UH, Ken Hensley is a genius out of proportion self taught musician, Gary Thain must be Top 3 bass player ever, David Byron among the best rock band front man, Mick Box as the perfect guitarist for a band and Lee Kerslake the power house of the group, their vocals are a reference still today. Good memories as a teenager in the 70's.

...from the album Demons and Wizards. Truly one of the greatest collections of glam rock. Brings me back to those innocent days. This entire album was magnificent. Circle of Hands was also an unbelievable song. Poetry and Heep's sound was fantastic. Their follow up album the Magicians Birthday was also incredible. Unfortunately I never saw them in concert. @@davorinflis3825 I hope I don't sound ridiculous... Both you and Boza Stamatovic are right, especially in 202o-21, when mostly useless rules and fears are created to make us forget this fact, this connection. In 1973 , I was living in Miami Fl. . I was in the 5th -6th grade . My new friend that I just met talked me into skipping school after lunch.... and got to his house to check out this band.... "Uriah heep" he said they were great. With a "J" in my pocket , I took him up on it . The 1st UH. album we listened to was "Demons and Wizards" . My new friend Steve , he played a Gibson SG guitar . He played every note as we listened .Next was " The Magians birthday " , by then we were "felling fine" and the music fit perfect ! This was a little different music .The back-ground vocals and Hammond organ. Just grabbed me , I've met people that HATE HEEP ?????? I was a BIG Beatles and Stones fan . So I always dug good music .Also around the early 70's Zepp , Sabbath , Purple were also in my ear . Well then Steve, still with guitar in hands.. put "U.H. Live 73" on the turntable and that just hooked me .WOW. At the age of 26years , I was on a date with a Girl who would end-up to be my wife.....well we were holding each other and I was humming the song "Sunrise" , she started to sing the words . When I told her It was my favorite band, she said it was one of hers too. As time went by she is a WONDERFUL Women ,Mother. I knew she was the girl for me. We raised 4 children ....they were brought -up on the music . It goes on and on . Sooooooo much more I could tell of the influence ,of this band and not just musically . I'm around 60 years old and HEEP is a everyday thing.... It is the sound track of my life .Through the good and bad times , some HEEP song will pop in my head and carry me. I lost contact with Steve ...in or around 1980 . I'm sure he is still jamming with his guitar to some CLASSIC ROCK music . I was lucky to grow up with some of the greatest music ever made . Uriah Heep is my band , i have met most of the band / past and present ,autograph's pictures , books ,tee shirts .THEY ARE IN MY SOUL . R.I.P. Ken Hensley ,Lee Kerslake ,John Wetton , Trevor Bolder, David Byron , Gary Thain . Peace , Love .

I just don't think people are brave enough to do music like this. This music is out-of-style these days. People seem to want to focus on boring boy/girl songs. If not that, they want goofballs pretending to be criminals and blabbering instead of singing. There seems almost to be an aversion to being good at playing an instrument well in most pop and rock music today. This music has higher aspirations lyrically, and the musicianship is top-notch all the way around. I'm afraid someone trying to write songs like this today would just get made fun of by cynics and called "Spinal Tap" or "dad rock" or worse. The purity and innocence of this song, and the aspiration to reach higher and create a better world, is something that, unfortunately, a lot of people can't seem to connect with right now. It takes guts to make music like this in the current social environment, and I hope that one day some band will get up there and start singing about wizards and world peace again, because we damn sure need it. Now I'm off my soapbox.
