URSA Mini 4.6K vs. 4K Final Camera Review

I've been using the 4K for nine months and 4.6K for six. I wanted to do a final review of the two cameras.

Thanks for this honest (and funny) review again! Planning to buy the 4.6k. I was first thinking to buy the Sony FS5 but the image of the Ursa just seems sooo much better. All ready have the Prod cam 4k and the Micro cinema cam. You gotta hate them and love them!

IMO the 4k is better, ok it has less dynamic range but omg that global shutter that the 4,6 does'nt have is amazing for a camera at that price point.

Thanks for the reviews. It's great to hear as many viewpoints as possible on these cams (I own them as well). Having said that, it's hard to ignore the asymmetrical magenta cast in your main shot... You might look at RMA'ing your 4.6K for a cleaner sensor.

First off thank you. The Ursa mini 4K is a way better camera than cinema 4k. I would highly recommend doing that. As for the color card sure I can do that. Not sure when I will get to it as I am going into my high production summer season so videos should be a little more sporadic but I'll do that.

The 4K has a contrastier look to it and coloring it is slightly different. I honestly haven't used the 4K camera in so long I couldn't tell you very well anymore

Does the Ursa mini 4k have a crop factor ? Eg. will my rokinon 50mm be a 50mm at 4K @ 24fps? or will it be closer to an 85mm?

I'm about to invest into either a 4k or a 4,6K for studio shooting. There will be lighting, although would you recommend having the 4,6K because of the low light risks?

The 4.6K is just a far more versatile camera and gives in my opinion a better image that is much easier to work with in post. That being said the 4K is a great camera and if it is a budget reason than go with the 4K. You'll still get a great image.

I enjoy and appreciate your videos, but I see that this video has a magenta cast in the upper and lower right corners. (I'm assuming that the background is actually solid grey? ) Did you shoot this on the UM4.6k by chance? I had to go through four different UM4.6k cameras to finally get one that was generally magenta free, but even then I'll can still get it in the corners with certain lenses past T/f8 or so. The overall magenta cast difference between my first three cameras and the one I finally kept was dramatic. Unfortunately all UM4.6k's are not created equally. The original magenta issue for me was never about any overall magenta cast that could be corrected in post or with the new firmware in camera, it was about the magenta corners that couldn't be globally corrected for. Additionally, I also found that the Schneider True Cut 680 filter works wonders in blocking infra red pollution that can be seen in your shirt. That filter lives on my camera, wether I'm using ND filters or not. All that said, I absolutely love my UM4.6k! Keep up the good work!

Benton Collins it was shot on the 4.6k. I hadn't noticed the corners but I'll go back to the raw and see if they are there. Also I totally agree that not all are created equal. I've had a lot of comments about it in my videos. As for the firmware for me I haven't seen the cast. Before it it was really obvious the wider I went. So thanks for pointing it out. I'll look into it. Also thanks for the Filter suggestion

If you compare the right upper top of the grey background with the left side in the video you posted above, you should be able to easily see the magenta cast on the right when compared to the relatively neutral grey on the left side. You don't need to go back to the RAW file to see it.

thx my man ! helpful. i have a in mind to order the 4k but im a bit stressed about the fix pattern noise and the dark black hole in high light.... my 2.5 et production 4k had it... i dont want to be tricked again.... what do you think?

Fixed pattern noise is present on the 4.6k model at 1600 ISO. On the 4K its present at 800. The black hole is not on the 4.6k, but it might be on the 4k because it shares the same sensor as the production camera.

if you were on a LOW budget and had to choose between an FS5, a BMCC or a C100mkii would you have a preference?

I can't speak to the FS5 as I haven't used it. But between the other two it depends on what I was shooting. If it was a low light horror film then c100 if it was more of a day time rom com I would do BMCC. The BMCC camera has a better filmic look in my opinion the C100 is very clean and a great camera just gives more of a clean corporate look. I hope that helps.

Hi, I have some questions and first, sorry for my bad english. My major is animation but I really like making movies. and I have a huge wish that make a film or MV or.........youtube vlog? close to cinematic look. these days I made graduation work by magic lantern raw files and I'm so fascinating that detail and color depth. but It was annoying about frame skipping,highlight plobelm, converting , other things.. so I decide to buy cinema camera which is ursa mini 4k or 4.6k. I am concerned about what camera gives me more pro cinematic look easily.(I know lighting is more important.. but..mostly I work alone..;-; or small team(with my friends) THAT IS A POINT Ursa mini 4k[low price, global shutter, bad(?)noise 12stop dr] vs Ursa mini 4.6k[high price(don't buy light for the moment ;0;), rolling shutter, low noise, 15stop DR] 4k's Noise can be overcomed by noise reduction? or In terms of noise light is necessary? (maybe don't buy expensive light..) 4k's DR is enough to make a pro cinematic look? and how it is amazing in 15stop DR of 4.6k? Is global shutter important for real cinematic feeling? otherwise 15stop DR is more important? Is it generate flicker effect in fluorescent light,led light or jello effect in electric fan? 4.6k is it worth to me? although pay over $2000 than 4k price how do you think which is better option from this perspective of making cinematic look easily

daeng daeng it's the 15 stops that make a huge difference in my book. It brings the dynamic range closer to film thus making it feel more cinematic. I would say go with the 4.6k for sure and to make it easier find a little you really like for it and apply that for quick color correction. Hope that helps

You can get an SSD adapter for the URSA Mini cameras. A CCtech will mount at the back of the camera replacing the battery plate and then you can mount a battery directly on the SSd adapter powering the Camera and the Adapter directly
