I think the US Coast Guard deserves more respect and credit.
@ericirwin4133 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons how the Coast Guard doesn't get as much recognition and respect as the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines is because there combat oriented and the Coast Guard isn't!! And with all the people in the Coast Guard there are less then 300 rescue swimmers by themselves!! People don't really think about what the Coast Guard actually does besides just search and rescue!! Coast Guard's been around for almost 231 years! August 4, 1790! Nobody really appreciates them until they actually need them!! Idk if that part is true or not!! For example The Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico!! Accidents like that where they really need to be called into action!!

FYI: The videos of the person swimming from the boat to the other Coast Guard member is NOT a Rescue Swimmer. They are referred to as "Surface Swimmers". It is a qualification that you can obtain at mostly every Boat unit in the Coast Guard. As they do swim in water to help any survivors, do not confuse them with the actual rating of Aviation Survival Technician (Rescue Swimmer's). Surface Swimmers can not enter the water under certain circumstances such as high winds and high swells.

Once you become a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer (AST) we do a PT test once every 3 months. It’s a lot of land a water stuff. Also the guy on the boat with a life ring and tied to the boat is not a (AST) Helicopter Rescue Swimmer. That’s a non rate who is just the cutter or surface swimmer. Usually those are just the most fit person on the boat. Big difference from a AST. Mostly accurate video though.

The clip of the swimmer attached to a line while doing the training was a surface swimmer and not a rescue swimmer. Surface swimmer is just a qualification that normally non-rates get if you are at a cutter or small-boat station. The requirements are way lower and is someone who will likely never actually have to get in the water. The AST’s don’t go out attached to a line.
@carlosguillen55403 жыл бұрын
I was in 90 to 95 what happen to the boat crew swimmer? If you could not come alongside and it was your turn you went in with a stokes litter, bouy ring, etc. Do we not go in anymore?
@silntstl Жыл бұрын
"The AST's don't go out attached to a line". Not completely true. Depending on the sea state, winds and other mitigating factors there are times when they a required to stay on the hook. Meaning they must not detach from the hoist hook which in turn is connected to the hoist cable.

No comparison really, one actively performs rescues and has the training and experience to back it up, meanwhile Navy SAR rarely performs their actual job and focuses heavily on other aspects like tactics and utility work. For the Navy, being a rescue swimmer is more of a collateral duty, and not the main focus unlike a Coast Guard AST. You will focus much more on being a hoist operator, crew chief, and aerial gunner in the Navy.
