Old Hand Forged Knife Restoration

It was an absolute honor to restore this old hand forged masterpiece from 1954. Blacksmith Eivind Hovden with registered blacksmith stamp E.H. in Norway started forging knife blades from 1925. Welding high carbon steel between mild steel by hand in coal forge for this gentleman was an easy task. After 66 years the blade still looks amazing and hopefully after my restoration it will survive the next 66 years.
Beside the knife restoration in this video, I also made a wooden handle (curly birch wood), miniature brass pommel for the knife tang and leather scabbard. Several things I did for the first time in this video and they are:
- making a wet form leather scabbard;
- using treadle powered lathe for metal and making small brass pommel;
- cutting and shaping the antler for the handle.

I have to say, my favorite part of the video was the saunter test at the end. How convenient is it to draw, use, and replace smoothly while moving about the shop? Find out with a saunter test. Very good and climatic restoration! Also, beautifull knife. 2 advices- 13:42 always hammer the end when blade is in the vise, its very easy to break or bend tip of the blade the way you do it. Happened to me once or twice ;) Its also good to use wood inside for sheath, it makes it more durable.

I want to see the industrial revolution of your shop! One motor, and 15 axles and 50 belts swirling everywhere. My great grandfather had a blacksmith shop with 1 motor powering several things (drill press, lathe, grindstone, and a few belts going to things removed before my time). Im in Eidsvoll if you want to have a look.

That would be a drastic change 😅. I am familiar with the similar setup where the water is powering many machines through belts. Both systems are simple but yet quite complicated for one person to make it happen in a very limited time after work and hobby budget. From video production perspective sound would be a real challenge to record since the both systems are quite loud. Uansett, jeg setter stor pris på ditt forslag og tusen takk for invitasjonen! Congratulations, a good video is not even about restoration, but about historical reconstruction. Excellent set of pedal machines in good condition. A small story to add... These leather Seths are nice. Tight fit etcetera. When I was around ten or so, my father gifted me such a "noive". Then I grabbed the seth, trying to get the knive back into. Unfortunately at an angle. Lead to firstly slice the leather and then at least three fingers qiuet deeply. I still have the "noive", I still have the fingers. I got the lesson!

Omg, that must be an ugly experience. But I am glad to read that you see that as a positive learning curve. While reading your story I was imagining in my head what happened and I chilled. I applied a leather hardener on my sheath from inside. After one day it becomes solid like a rock and it is extremely hard to cut through now. It looks the same, but tougher. I am glad you shared your story, this can be learning for many. Also it is very important to think about these things in the design phase and remove any potential hazard situation if possible.
