at 5:14 the reason why the Dutch marines' uniforms look so different from each other is because they are allowed to personalise their own kit and gear. The Dutch military basically trusts on the marine's expertise that he will select the right gear for the right conditions rather than forcing a standard outfit upon him.

I filmed and edited the original video. Great to see it being analysed and appraised by an actual Marine. Top stuff. Can't say enough good things about working alongside the Marines from all of these countries. Fantastic bunch of people who were happy to help in any way. Filming with the Portuguese was particularly awesome as it was summer in Lithuania and they did everything the could to help us get those awesome shots. It was fricking cold on the ORCs, but another bucketlist experience. Really enjoyed the vid and the analysis. thanks for you service! And enjoy Scotland.

The 'Black Devils' are the Dutch marines. They earned that name in the battle of Rotterdam in may 1940, when a hand full of marines, later joined by some regular troops, managed to keep the Germans pinned down south of the river that splits the town in half for days. The Germans had thrown in lots of airborne troops and troops that landed on the river in several flying boats. After they capitulated the German commander ordered his troops to salute the defeated Dutch out of respect for their bravery. The Germans actually came up with the name 'Black Devils' for the marines, because of their nearly black uniforms .

Chatham 1667 - More than 800 Dutch marines land on English territory and capture Fort Sheerness. This enables Admiral Michiel de Ruyter to sail up the River Medway and inflict the greatest defeat ever on the English fleet. It marked the first victory of the Dutch Marine Corps, which had been established two years earlier, on December 10, 1665.

THE MARINE CORPS Founded on 10 December 1665, the Marine Corps is an elite component of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Marines are also referred to as naval infantry soldiers. They are infantrymen (soldiers who fight on foot) who are deployed to fight where land meets water, performing special missions in every corner of the globe. This is reflected in their battle cry Qua patet orbis: ‘As far as the world reaches’.

Germany doesn't have marines in the sense the US has. We have the Seebataillion (Sea Battalion) which is 1,200 strong - with companies of mine clearance divers, recon, 2 x boarding specialists, support troops, medics. And we have the elite Kommando Spezialkräfte Marine (KSM), which is basically the German version of Navy Seals.

I served in the Finnish Coastal Jaeger's that is the Finnish Marines and we are specialized in fighting in the archipelago of the Finnish coastal areas. Our training was more similar to the Royal Marine Commandos in many ways than US Marines. We also wear a green beret if passed a +70 km march carrying close to 50kg of gear with stops were your skills are tested. The march takes between 24-30 hours to complete. Besides the march you have to fulfilled certain requirements to be allowed to obtain the beret. When I did my service 1993 we didn't have any exercises with foreign forces but just few years later we started to have exercises with the Swedish Coastal Rangers and since then also exercises with NATO Marine forces mostly during the annual Balt Ops exercise. Last year a more of a logistical US Marine unit was staying at the Finnish Coastal Jaeger's for couple of months for exercises and learning from each other as preparation for the day Finland becomes a full member of NATO.

The history of Marine forces dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, especially the Athenian Naval Forces deployed in the Peloponnesian Wars who had mastery in amphibious assaults, also the Roman Naval Infantry Legion known as "Adiutrix". Officially the idea of a proper Marine Corps unit was adopted by Spain in 1537 known as "Infanteria de Marina", also active now making it the oldest and deadliest serving Marine Corps. Not really true 1. **Portuguese Marine Corps (Corpo de Fuzileiros)**: The Portuguese Marine Corps is considered the oldest marine corps in the world. It was established in 1618. It has served continuously since then, making it the oldest continuously serving marine unit. 2. **Spanish Marine Corps (Infantería de Marina)**: The Spanish Marine Corps was established even earlier, on February 27, 1537. It is recognized as the oldest marine corps in the world. However, it has undergone periods of reorganization, which is why the Portuguese Marine Corps is often noted for its continuous service. While the US Marine Corps is the oldest marine corps in continuous service since its founding within the United States, globally, the Portuguese and Spanish marine corps have older origins.

@@KarILsson I don't think it makes it any softer but the stock is higher up inline with the bore so the muzzle climb is attenuated. A very big downside is the length. It's a huge weapon for close quarters. It forces the units to employ limited penetration tactics every time.

The Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch here all claiming that their is the first naval infantry/marine force in history. However let's not forget that also the Romans centuries before used naval infantry formations (the milites classiarii) during naval battles and landings. Over here in Italy we have two marine units, the Army regiment "Serenissima" and the Navy Brigade "San Marco". The latter traces its history back to the various pre-unification naval infantry formations of the various Italian states and especially the Fanti da Mar of the Republic of Venice, created in 1550, themselves tracing their history back to the landing regiment created by Enrico Dandolo in 1202 for the Forth Crusade

He is commenting on other video about NATO members that have Marine Units, amphibious warefare. JTF-2 is a Special Operations Unit whose primary role is counter terriosm. Canada does not have an amphibious Force. The Army has trained among side the USMC in some amphibious exercises but really we lack this capability. Our troope were on US ships and using their landing craft to move our vehicles and troops ashore. Our Navy lacks that capability and training.

Black Devils I can only relate to the polish army ww2 - or to the First Special Service Force ; Kommando-Brigade (American-Canadian). And mabey the Netherlands Marine Corps as well. So this term has quite a massive range. Kinda overused, isn't it.

US General Poppas is a Greek-American and (I think because of this) in the last few years, there are many military exercises taking place in Greece between US (Airmobile) and Greek forces (many more than in the past). This is a video about such a recent exercise: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaKtmGOvq75_frs In Greece the Marines are part of the Army's special forces, not the Navy, and comprise the 32nd Marine brigade. The main mission of this brigade is to move by sea and reinforce the NG units in the Aegean islands, or retake an island, after an attack. They work with the Navy's OYK (SEAL) teams dedicated for landing support operations and the fleet's landing ship command. Also Greek Army and Coast Guard officers can participate in the Navy's OYK-SEALS training program along with the Navy's personnel. In addition to the Marines, there are six Amphibious Raider Squadrons (MAKs) from which at least the Z MAK is a tier one unit. Their mission, as quick reaction forces, is to retake minor uninhabited Aegean islands from enemy commando forces that may have landed on them. These are some videos regarding these forces and joint exercises: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4Pdqn-DjbyIapY kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIitmKVmj6ahsKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5XSl4KPeLWZrpY Contrary to the US armed forces, we do use women in combat units, including the special forces (not many, but there are those who can pull their own weight there): kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpO7qZWffrqcjtU (2 chevrons in the Greek Army indicate an Sgt.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHPKn4SlbMygnZo (this one is a Greek SOF Lt. with more than 100 HALO jumps, the interview was taken after a NATO exercise in Germany, where she was the first woman HALO Jump Leader ever) Also on March 25th is the Greek Independence Day, with a military parade in Athens, in front of the memorial of the unknown soldier and the parliament building in Syntagma (Constitution) square. This is the video from last year's military parade in Athens: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoC4cnuChpeXpqM Hope you may find some of these videos interesting and maybe you come come to visit Greece some time. PS This is an interesting video on KZbin about the US Marines in the Gulf of Tripoli: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4m9i6GNgrVnebc Hope you enjoy it

The name "marines" comes from the Dutch word "Mariniers". The Mariniers were the first specialized Dutch militairy branche trained and equipped for both land and water based fighting. Also is it, I believe but dont qoute me on that, the oldest still standing world wide.

The USMC are one of the best militaries in the world. For sheer breath of capability. The Royal Marines are probably the best individual soldiers in the world however And the various other NATO marine corps are generally the best specific specialists in a certain field in the world. Snow and forests? Norway certainly hard to beat there! Need to sort a hostage situation on a container ship? The Dutch black devils are who to call Overall I'm glad they are all on our side!
