Well I'm surprised they didn't do "Mark Time" (marching in place) I think that's an Air Force drill command. Their obliques were a little sloppy, but that's because of the limited stage room, remember the tv cameras were stationary back then (humongous cameras) so they had to remain in frame. Of course they're Marines, and NCO's at that. Their bearing and movements were precise. Great recruiting tool. Excellent segment.

I am a new Zealanders. I grew up with stories from my Aunties and mother about the manners and correct behaviour of the men of the marines (the other branches too, but here I speak of the Corps) as a tiny nation at bottom of the world, with our TWO Divisions engaged in the desert against the Italians and later the D. A. K. under Rommel. Suddenly our nation was threatened directly. My Grandfather immediately contrived a US Flag and it flew from His flagpole for the duration. Our family home is at Ravensbourne, which is the inner harbour channel 14 kms til the city of Dunedin. Grandad had 4 sons and a daughter. (my Mum) mum was 10 years old in Jan 1945., mum's eldest brother, William (Bill) Dyson. Enlisted along with all his brothers of age. So, three of them. We have a photo of the 3 at the time of the youngest first day pass in uniform. Now, that pic told me that in 1940, training platoons could and were issued with 14-18 pattern webbing. I digress here as the ww1 bandolier that our uncles were issued with, tell us a different emotional story. Back to marines, in 1942 my Beautiful & admirable Aunt, who had married my Uncle Bill. Who wasn't yet an officer. I believe. Well, shortly thereafter he deployed again and Aunty Vera was working on Lambton Quay, one day there was a commotion and a growing excitement and expectation among them all as bits of rumour came in. Basically, suburban trains that day were treated to a sight they would not see again. Making their way down State HiWay 1, with band, drums colours flying, men kitted for everything. Was a great snaking line of the USMC, the vast majority were in aware of their ultimate destination. They met at sea with the rest of their contingent, and weeks later my Aunty was greatly affected by the news of the Guadalcanal losses. Universally described as, of great manners not seen here, a giving nature, helped by the value of the dollar and the px I guess. My friends and family all have their own memories. Also, I feel the need to apologise on the backward pieces of 'literature' that emanate from here. Ingrates, not all of us though. In ending I'd like to make the point that many if us here share genetic ties with the USA, the Irish men who emigrated, didn't all go to one country. If my dear mother had not uncovered an obituary for Her Mum's brother, Richard d. 3 week August, gallipoli, in this obit, Great grandfather named other relations I'd never heard of, I knew a third of the family came here, couple to Australia, rest to USA, Quigley my maternal line. Cousin of my great uncle was a Thomas Quigley, a stoker/plumber aboard the USS MAINE, after searching for a plot at both Arlington National cemetery and a smaller plot in South florida, he is on the manifest, but no burial record. Atomised, his job tells me,
