How did this just come up on the Que? This. is over 8 years old and only 505 people have viewed this. This is a masterpiece in Classical training? Incredible.

I agree! Good to see how times have changed! His coming way to close to the jump and the horse looses a lot of momentum in being hesitant!

Captain Russell might be "bold" but he's also rather heavy-handed and thoughtless of the horse. The first one out, who was using the whip - that's just bad horsemanship. Whipping a horse over jumps? He had to drop the reins on one side in order to lay the whip on, it is not "perfect use" at all, it is "perfect idiocy" to use a whip like that. It says to me that he has no connection with his horse, and no confidence in the horse either. It would make the horse apprehensive and anxious about what he has to do. Whips hurt, I have an ex hunter who was traumatized by whips, breaks out in a sweat every time he sees one. He could have used a couple of years of dressage training, under a European master. Jumping is complicated, and requires perfect partnership, not perfect whipping. It's one thing to use a whip on a racehorse, which is disapproved of in any case, because the horse is just galloping straight. But in jumping, you cannot risk breaking trust (and mouth contacat) like that. You certainly don't see the Puissance riders whipping a horse over a 7' jump, there is no need to, because the horse and rider understand each other "perfectly". Once you beat an animal (or a child) that bond of trust is broken,. Really annoying to see how the video writers gloss over bad riding. However, the rider who they stated was a great rider - was a very good rider. No need for whips, or for charging at jumps in order to be "bold".

Also, he started whipping the horse right when it was mid-jump, right over the fence. Once the horse has left the ground and is soaring what did he think it could do other than continue its trajectory? The only outcome to whipping a horse at that point would be to mess with it’s landing? Makes absolutely no sense. Thank goodness Show Jumping has changed in that regard.

@@cardinalfox0734 You dont get that it was so DANGEROUS so they LEARNED HOW TO BALANCE UP THE HORSES

@@cardinalfox0734 He raced to every fence, the horse was flat as a pancake and had to shorten up his own stride with no half halt from the rider. Terrible riding.
