I don't think the US should be involved in Syria period. It's not our problem. If Russia wants to clean up the mess in Syria let them. If Turkey gets involved they need to know that we don't share their fear of the Kurds or their hatred of Sunni/Alawhite Islam so we won't bail them out. We do have an obligation to Iraq. We left too soon and enabled IS to get a foothold we need to exterminate that disease.

I AGREE! 100% That is what I am saying long time ago in the UK too! In the Westminster we have some extremely evil MP's and they speak about Reform laws in the EU then next sentence oh by the way we must remove Assad. But no arguments at all like this is or that is why. No nothing. Just remove as he must go. And thats it. Even though we see that Assad saved us and the Christians from killer Muslim Groups. UK and US should be together and be friends with Russia and kick the Saudis out and save Syria!

10:38 The link to the NYT article in question: www.nytimes.com/2013/09/06/world/middleeast/israel-backs-limited-strike-against-syria.html?pagewanted=all&pagewanted=print "For Jerusalem, the status quo, horrific as it may be from a humanitarian perspective, seems preferable to either a victory by Mr. Assad’s government and his Iranian backers or a strengthening of rebel groups, increasingly dominated by Sunni jihadis. 'This is a playoff situation in which you need both teams to lose, but at least you don’t want one to win - we’ll settle for a tie,' said Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli consul general in New York. 'Let them both bleed, hemorrhage to death: that’s the strategic thinking here. As long as this lingers, there’s no real threat from Syria.'" However, while the state of Israel follows security policies which don't appear to be convergent with US interest - or the European Union, considering Sunni mass migration - it should be noted that the very creation of a Jewish nationstate within the former territories of the Ottoman Empire would not have succeeded if it were solely the nostalgic wish of Jewish intellectuals for a restauration of the 'Maccabean' independence of antiquity: "The most immediate danger in the Middle East, according to Mahan, was Russian pressure upon Persia. *If* *the* *Russian* *Empire* *controlled* *Persia* , he explained, *it* *would* *control* *the* *Persian* *Gulf* , effectively flank India, *threaten* *the* *route* to the East *via* *Suez* , and be in a position to interfere with communications between the eastern Mediterranean and the Mesopotamian Valley and between the Mesopotamian Valley and India. Moreover, a *Russian* naval *presence* *in* *the* *Persian* *Gulf* *would* *force* *Britain* *to* *reduce* or abandon *it's* *naval* *presence* *in* *the* *Black* *Sea* , the *South* *China* *Sea* , or both. *To* *counter* *Russian* *ambitions* in this area, *Mahan* *urged* *the* *sea* *powers* *to* *support* *the* *creation* *of* *a* 'highly developed *modern* *state* , with an efficiently organized army and navy', *situated* *in* 'Asia Minor, *Syria* *and* *Mesopotamia* '. 'This imagined state', he wrote, ' *touching* the Black Sea, the Persian Gulf, *the* *Red* *Sea* , *and* *the* *Levant* , would control the issues from vast territories to the outer world'." (Alfred Thayer Mahan: The problem of Asia: its effect upon international politics. 1905. With an introduction to the Transaction Edition by Francis Sempa from 2003) It is obvious that this imagined state from 1905 was partially realized at the creation of the state of Israel, if one replaces 'Britain' with the dominant maritime power of today one finds this text to be an accurate description of the present destabilization and fragmentation of the 'Greater Middle East' (centred around present day Iran). These *19th* *century* *geopolitical* *considerations* with the goal of a *maritime* *commercial* *hegemony* , legitimized by Western culture also help to explain the quite dedicated Russian military presence in the region (closely related to the ongoing conflict in the former soviet republic of Ukraine) and furthermore hints already at the possibility of a Chinese commitment (due to a perceived Western dominance in the Pacific), which is already reflected in a new Sino-Russian rapprochement in the UN Security Council after the Cold War, rallied to the *Westphalian* *principle* *of* *non-intervention* , and which may result in a *Chinese* *military* *presence* *along* their *Silk* *Road* *infrastructure* *projects* . Adressing interests of the actor Israel can be done without a neo-conservative pathos of shoa invocation/Puritan messianism or, which would be the other extreme: Anti-Semitic resentment. I sense a present vacuum between Political Realism and an institutionalization of international law, newly industrialized countries can subscribe to (without going to war like Imperial Germany and Japan before).

This reminds me of the absurdity of "W" on T.V. starting a war with, "They tried to kill my Dad." He appeared to be saying that retribution toward a country for a historic attempt made on one man was a valid cause. How many people have died from this action?

It was and with overwhelming support as the guy stayed with the people and fights 1000's of terrorists from all over the World. Assad is possible the most intelligent and best President in this world! He is a rich guy he could have just left and have a nice easy life in some places like Key West FL but no he is a true leader! I studied Syria for years and I have no ties to them. I live in London UK and have no friends at all from Arab states but if you learn the truth about this war you soon find yourself ashamed if you are a Westerner and realise that Assad saved the whole Christianity while everyone wanted to kill him.

El John I have seen a couple of interviews with him -one on Czech TV..which was excellent perhaps a year ago. He is an eye doctor I think--in any case he is well educated, intelligent, has really nice wife and can not possibly be as the USA has described him. He is the last secular leader in the region. I saw another more biased against him interview somewhat more recently on some W. Europe TV...and he still comes off as a serious caring thoughtful person who is attempting to keep Syria united.
