What's fascinating about Carter's last Hail to the Chief was that he was working through the night before Reagan's inauguration to help secure the release of the American hostages in Iran!! The Iranians decided to stick it to Carter by not releasing the hostages until Reagan became president. Knowing that it was the Carter administration that helped secure the release of the hostages, Reagan in one of his first acts as president had Carter fly out to West Germany to greet the hostages as they board a plane back to the U.S.

Sadly the Vice President rarely ascends to the Presidency except after the death/resignation of the former President. Bush Sr. was the only one in recent times to be elected directly after the President he served with. Nixon and Biden both eventually became President, but there was one/two Presidents in between their terms and Eisenhower and Obama's terms.
