Man that brought back memories. And some misty eyes. First cruise was 83/84 WestPac aboard USS Ranger, with VF-24. There were guys joking about, "What's the worst that could happen?" The list is long.... One thing you never want to hear is, "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE", but we did, and we beat it. But some who walked on were carried off, and "the last wife on the pier" got a letter. It will sound odd to those who have never "been there, done that", but I miss it. The hours, the organized chaos, the flight deck ballet. For those still willing to do it, I thank you!

I had orders to the Kennedy (HS7) in April of 1983, but chose to separate. Wound up going to work in the airline business as an A&P mechanic. Just retired after 32 years with a major US airline. The Navy trained me to do this sort of job, and made it possible for me to attend the schooling & testing for my A&P license. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

What a great clip, brought back memories of when my husband would leave on deployment. He was in a Navy flight squadron so our goodbyes were a little different especially since he was a flight engineer so he had to be there to do the pre-flight, it was just him and me in the car saying goodbye then I would watch him walk into the hanger and drive home crying. We went through 4 deployments together and were preparing for the fifth when he was killed along with 26 other men during a training exercise off the coast of San Diego March of 1991. He was a wonderful husband and father whom I still miss.

I am sorry that you lived through that experience. I know how that feels from people I have filmed whose experiences were similar. Your attitude towards life is great and I suspect your husband would be proud of you. David Hoffman filmmaker

There at 4:54 the Yarnell, used to know a fellow who had been on it.

Years later I wrote an alternate history involving the ship which included a song which went, _"I'll tell you the tale of where we sailed in to hell all present aboard the good ship Harry Yarnell"_ Sadly I no longer have the text of either my story or song.

About what year is this? I'm guessing about 1983 by the two first gen RX7's I saw.

That was our 83-84 cruise, It was supposed to be a Med-IO cruise but the Marine barracks were bombed in Beirut and we stayed in the Med. I was in B-Div ACC Shop on the Kennedy at that time.

I didn't quite understand what was said at 4:24. 7 months, 2 weeks and 8 hours before what is over? I guess until they come home. Man, that is a long time to leave the people one loves. But I guess that is okay when you come home to America and not your family. But I don't understand patriotism. I am german, I am not allowed to. Nontheless this is tough stuff. Like the officer said at 5:20 "The last wife at the pier...". Because all women their are wifes or mothers to those on the ship.
