California had 170 years of sustained growth and when the growth rate finally dropped, everyone else started saying “people are fleeing California in droves.” I need you all to understand how numbers work. 350K might seem like a lot a lot of the smaller states, but we’re almost 40 million people deep. That’s less than 1% of our population leaving. We aren’t even built upward like NYC is. There’s lots of room to still grow if we could get our politicians to plan better.

Barring a natural disaster or a war, California and Texas are never losing the top 2 spots ever again. Texas will pass California by 2035, but no other states have the land area and resources to grow like those two giants. The other large states are mostly barren deserts and/or mountains. A really bad hurricane or significant ice cap event could knock #3 Florida out of the Top 25. When most of the state is less than 20 ft above sea level, it's not ideal.

Because California and New York are very expensive and overcrowded, in the major cities especially. Not to mention crime and homelessness are on a constant rise and the state governments refuse to do anything about it or even acknowledge it, all they do is raise taxes, take money out of citizens checks so the governor can renovate his mansion, and pass stupid laws that, again, raise taxes and the overall cost of living and have very little to no positive effect for the environment, the people, or the state as a whole. At least in Texas and Florida, you can afford a house and enough groceries for the month to feed your family

Detroit is finally starting to make a comeback. Chicago and Philadelphia have some rough areas but there’s a lot of money in those cities and jobs are plentiful. But I honestly believe that if climate change continues, in 50 years or maybe less those northern cities are going to become even more popular, with the coasts flooding, the south too hot and too many hurricanes, and the west too dry with too many fires. Either they rigged/artificially adjusted the census, which has been talked about, or there is a time lag in reapportionment

We have more than that in CA. The census was cut short and imcomplete due to covid and they took numbers from CA. But we are completely full. More people than houses.

@don951 almost everywhere more people than houses. What they forgot, to count illegals and add to the census?

Two reasons: 1. Apportionment happens once every ten years, meaning the electoral college map changes once every ten years. It won’t change again until 2030. 2. Apportionment isn’t actually proportional to population. The methodology is fairly complicated, but it involves calculating priority values for new congressional seats. Every state automatically receives one seat (and thus three electoral votes), and the remaining 385 seats are allocated based on which priority value is the highest. Higher population results in higher priority values, but it’s still not fully proportional. Once all 435 seats are allocated, add two to each state total to get each state’s number of electors.
