I am from the U.S...and the British accent is considered 'educated' and classy..even the accents the Brits find low class!..if a person of either gender opens their mouth here and speaks as from the UK, they are thronged by the opposite sex!..we are taught the Brits are more educated!

Prior to the internet and major globalisation, Australians rarely heard American accents in their day to day lives. American-born Australians make up a TINY portion of our population. The accent is the result of the intermingling of the accents of the original colonists who came from places like England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The American accent was influenced largely by the same things in its early stages, hence the similarities.

I live in the North U.S. and I thought it was a Black American pronunciation until I visited the South. Whites in the south also eat blackeyed peas, chitterlings , collard greens ,grits and okra. Much of what I thought was exclusively African America I now understand it Southern. Just as white, Chinese Indo etc. Jamaicans are indistinguishable from Afro Jamaicans in mannerism, speech, culture and diet.

There are some subtleties to the London-RP accent: Words starting with "T" like Tube often changed to "ch" like "Choob". And words ending in L switched to -ow: Tunnel "Tunneau", Bell "Beaw". Australian speakers, and some British will end words that end in "o" with an "barely-OR" sound. No = "Nerrrrr", So= "Serrrrr", where Americans will end the same ending-in-o words with a more rounded "oh/ow" sound, "sooow".

British Sam speaks with more of the "Queen's English" (Received Pronunciation), there are accents who's pronunciations would vary hugely from Sam's own. Including Cockney where water would be pronounced "Wa'ah" or "Wa'er" where the 't' is silenced, this happens often when 't' precedes 'e'.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, a lot of city Australians do sound very standard British. the regional Australia you should spot right away cause it's quite a bit different. I guess the main thing to look out for to tell the difference is not so much how we say its what we say. most Australian will shorten words no matter what part they are from but Brittens less so. most Australians wouldn't be too offended if you ask and I don't think brittens would be either, its when we have a regional accent and you call us British that it might give us a little pause.

There are really 3 types of Australian accents -Cultivated, General and Broad. Bella sound like she has a general accent . I think now a days the General type of Australian accent is slowly changing from British pronunciation to to a odd mixture of both British and American. Nevertheless, Australian accent is so unique - not many people can mimic an Australian Accent. Personally I like the British Sam accent.

Yes, people north of London tend to say bath and path and Ham very similar to how it said in most of America, but south of London they tend to use that exaggerated ahhh sound in the middle that sounds overly affected and out of place.

i acually have to agree with this - When iv spoke to americans about our accents, they dont seem to understand how we change litrally from city to city in the uk. However we do massivly. Its accually to the point that you can tell somone from one area of a city to others. My English teacher put this video in my class today ( some minutes ago ). We have a lot of problems to understand British accent. When we have listening test we always ask: " British or American accent? " Australian accent is good because it looks like a mix a little bit of American accent and British accent, it's so cool, it's like a foreigner mixing many accents from different countries. The Australian lady makes a really good point in this video too, American English is actually the closest to the original English pronunciation. They know that because of the fact that we still pronounce the 'R' sound. Before English standardization in the mid 1700s people tended to spell words phonetically, and that last 'R' in words like 'popular' was written out. So that means it was pronounced when speaking, otherwise it would've been an 'AH' spelling.

There's a lot of words you could have showcased that were missed opportunities here. Aluminum, skeletal, schedule, vitamins, any t- words Americans pronounce with a 'd' Brits either enunciate the 't' sound or omit it entirely like Americans do with mittens. Water can also be pronounced 'woh-uh' same with 'better', or 'butter'. Aussies pronounce all of these words with the D sound and drop the R. 'Wodah', 'bedah', 'budah'. There's also the weird situation where Brits add an R when Americans don't. This is when one word ends with a vowel and the next word starts with a vowel. Ask how they pronounce 'law of the jungle' 'lawr of the jungle'. Or 'there's a stigma attached to skin colour'. Listen to the difference between the sentences 'my mother cooked me a meal' and 'I love my mother and father'. Dropped R in the first sentence, added R in the second.

I think you'll find it's called "Aluminium." And whilst we're on it, a lot of Brits tend to swallow the T's all together. So butter becomes: "buh' ah' or water: "war'ah". Had alot of fun teaching some Aussie kids that loved the accents I could pull off from back home. Wish I recorded their attempts, all laughs.
