What happened to Peru and Ecuador was that they dominated their matches until they expelled one of their players and now the two are almost eliminated and no one knows what they said to weah but he is a player. Professional has to have more sense of what is being played. It was the most important game of the group. If I were the coach, I would leave him out of the national team for a while. In fact, I would remove him from the concentration of the cup so that he remains as an example of what you are doing. Things at this level of competition cannot happen. Imagine that someone does that in the World Cup, years of work would be lost just because someone got carried away, so they would lose concentration right now and I wouldn't call them for a long time.

@chrishenderson12623 ай бұрын
I like BJ, but he's not the right answer either. Experience matters, but beyond that we still suffered from one of the two major issues here under his time. That being lack of discipline. During his first major game against Mexico in the Nations League semis, we got two needless red cards for emotionally reacting to inciting behavior by Mexico. That left us without McKennie and Dest for the finals of that tournament. I guess what I'm trying to say is even though BJ allowed the team to play more freely from a tactical standpoint, and used certain players in their best positions before Berhalter would take a chance doing so (Gio primarily), he comes from the same poisoned well with many of the same problems. Combine that with him honestly not having the resume, and it wouldn't be the right decision. I think you also need to send as strong a message as possible. Firing Berhalter only goes one step in that direction. You need to wipe the slate clean and let everyone involved, especially the players, know that full accountability will be enforced from here forward.

GGG panicked at Half Time. It was clear that the USMNT was holding their own in a 4-4-1 during the first half. We knew that we were going to have to pull Tyler (although I certainly would have played him for the first 5-10 minutes of the second half to establish the tone) & Turner apparently got hurt. I “GUARANTEE” you that GGG never game-planned for possible red cards before the game. It was clear that GGG should have stayed pat with the 4-4-1 & only pulled Turner at half time (& Tyler for Johnny if you couldn’t keep him on for 10 more minutes). Then GGG would have had subs in the last 30 minutes when guys start getting tired.

@@panamenopty305, I don’t disagree with any of this. And GGG should have practiced a back 3 at some point (maybe at one of those trash-ass, win record padding friendlies like against Uzbekistan). You have to plan for the unexpected like red cards (that’s what the time between camps is for). Jill Ellis spoke of this exact type of planning the USWNT staff would do where they would sit down & discuss game by game lineups for each starter and potential sub and what they would do if they lost a player to injury or red card if the team was ahead, tied, or behind & if it was early or late in the game. She said that they did that so when these types of moments happen, she could make a calm, rational response that was the best possible option, not one based on emotion or fear.
@williamgarry26353 ай бұрын
@@RickyRicardo84, I think they did that with Tyler b/c they needed the best 6 possible against Uruguay and I’d rather have 45 minutes of Tyler than 90 minutes of anyone else on the USMNT. That said, if you are going to do that, you need a plan for if something goes wrong. The first dumb thing GGG did was to pull Gio. He was playing great defense & was responsible for the break out into the attack. Gio creates dangerous scoring opportunities for us in a way that nobody else on this team can initiate. But if he was going to put CCV in the game, he should have pulled Scally & for a 3-man back line, gone with a 3-5-1 with A-Rob & Pulisic helping in the middle. I would have stayed with the team as it was in the first half to keep pushing for a win w/ a tie as my fallback plan. I would have pulled Tyler at the 55th minute, likely for Johnny for a like-for-like defender. Then I would have put Musah in later, likely for Scally to give the team more attacking from the RB. I would then have my last 2 subs (assuming that Turner HAD TO come out the game) to add fresh legs based on our needs to replace a CB with Robinson, or Aaronson at winger to chase on defense, or Sargent to get a header on a cross, or even Haji for a fresh like for like with Balogan (but with the way he was playing, I might not have pulled him at all). But I would have kept A-Rob, Gio, & McKinney in for the whole game. And I’m hard pressed to think of a reason to think of a reason to lift Pulisic unless we were protecting a lead at the 75th or 80th minute. And Balo has been everything we’ve wanted in a 9 in this tournament so why pull HIM?

This team is soft and inconsistent. And until that changes… the manager doesn’t matter. Yeah tactics can be better . Yeah subs can be better. But a manager can only do so Much to change what’s in your heart and soul. Good summary … When Reyna was in, we had the ability to counter, but we abandoned a win with the 5-3-1 formation. Panama was set up very cautiously, they had 3 backs and 2 holding midfielders. If you watch the replay, most of the time, our opposite side fullback did nothing when Panama tried for a cross. We should have used a 4 man backline bolstering the midfield. And USA’s sole striker could not counter against the 5 Panama defenders. Berhalter’s best was therefore to hope for a draw, but we’d have to hold off Panama for nearly 70 minutes - stupid tournament logic. So we needed 2 strikers to stretch the play a little and hold up the ball with 2 wide players supporting the counter. A 4-4-1 would do that - Balogan is up top with Reyna tucked under and Pulisic staying wide with Adams and McKinney holding. This slight change would have put Panama’s 5 defenders under more pressure.

Your analysis was okay, but I don't agree with you at all on one point: fearing the coach was, is and always will be the wrong approach. A coach without self-confidence and without trust in his players is simply bound to fail. Apart from that, I never thought much of Berhalter...
@mackdeen70213 ай бұрын
It’s one approach. Bot always the best. But I grantee you top programs around the World there is fear installed in the players at least in the respect of, “if you mess up. You lose playing time or lose your spot”. And also there should always be a way to get back or redeem yourself. Berhalter plays favorites, and some players can mess up and get a pass, others will be thrown into the dog house. Fear needs to be used fairly if used at all.
@williamg31273 ай бұрын
To begin with, Berhalter lacks BASIC football knowledge, never mind coaching psychology and refinements associated with being liked, respected, feared.
@bladablitz3 ай бұрын
@@mackdeen7021 To be honest: I'm part of one of the "top programs" you described. After 18 years as a semi-professional player (plus 12 years in the youth ranks), I have been a youth coach for the 16 to 18 year olds for over 10 years. Fits me perfectly, I don't want any more at the moment. It may be that fear of the coach works in certain sports. I don't know anything about that. But not in football. Tim Weah? At Juventus he gets 50k a week until the summer of 2028. And that with an average working time of 40 minutes. He doesn't care much about the red card. What should he fear? Quite simply his apology AND his explanation in the dressing room in front of his teammates. Believe me - he's definitely not afraid of not being put up. Even as a young academy player, you learn that there are 3 or 4 other players in your position. You can only convince through performance. And Berhalter? Well, he did play in Europe for a few years, but only with second or third division clubs. That doesn't necessarily mean he's not a good coach, but you can definitely see his lack of tactics, understanding of all positions, and attitude towards different opponents. The question is, how did someone like him get such a job? It would have been better if, like every aspiring coach, he had started in the youth sector. It doesn't matter which trainer you choose: starting straight away with the "big ones" only works very, very rarely. What's more, as a national team coach you don't have the same opportunities that a club coach does.

We are more athletic and young, but it proves pointless if all the players have just one and overly repetitively boring passes even to a casual fan. The Panamanian second goal came from a clever assist from an offside position. A casual fan wouldn't notice but clap as work of art. Read between the lines when a team is street smart and we got found out. The ref was L as in incompetent and sweaty,delusional etc.

We're crashing out. No way we beat Uruguay and no way Panama loses to Bolivia. There are scenarios where we eke our way out, but all of which are low low LOW probability. Agree of course Berhalter should go no matter what happens, but we will see if the team rallies around him and someone ekes out a miracle. As for his in game changes at half, I actually thought they made sense. While Reyna is perhaps our most skilled technical player, he is not great at defending and he certainly wasn't going to get a lot of touches. Going to five in the back would free Jedi on the counter and it almost did on a couple of occasions. A tie was eminently achievable but, frankly we deserved to lose that game. I swear, Weah needs to do a Bart Simpon and spend the next training session writing on the White Board "I will not smack an opposing player on the head because VAR is watching." And you also want to know why we lost? Because it was a classic Concacaf game, bearing little resemblance to a Copa America game. And we can really suck when we are in a Concacaf game where our opponents always seem to have the up on us with their mind games. Everybody loses games, but we have the knack of losing games and being astonishingly stupid at the same time. The only thing golden sometimes about this Golden Generation is the excretory color of their brain farts.

This is a pattern. You can’t tell me that it’s a coincidence that this is the 2nd time in critical games that a player loses their cool or does something so stupid to get a Red within a 7 month period (last Nov. against T&T) . Along with way too many critical mental mistakes in big games and unable to dig deep and overcome adversity…..this all points to more than just a player doing something to cost the team.

Had the same thought when he subbed out Balogun. You want someone up front with a lot of speed on a counterattack.....right?.....anyway. I'm recalling in Tim Howard's book how he would "jump through a wall" for his coach at Everton, David Moyes (perhaps the next Scotland coach? or US?). I get the impression that Berhalter doesn't quite induce such motivation....I dunno.....I think he's done, unless something completely off-the-charts occurs during the Uruguay game.

How about you learn first to play outside the home bubble and understand that your team is good when conditions are "normal" (usually playing at home) but flakes when something unexpected happens. Red cards are part of football, just like injuries or any other unexpected conditions - that's what Football is all about. You did not learn from your ridiculous performance at Trinidad and Tobago before Russia WC and you still think you can compete with high-tiered teams just because most of the players play in Europe which is ironic because ALL players from top-tiered teams ALSO PLAY IN EUROPE in the BEST TEAMS at the highest performance, especially Argentina, Brazil, and ALL European teams. The US dominates the Concaf region right now, but is ages away from being truly competitive when tournaments are played outside "home" or that deviate just a bit from the ideal bubble.

We learned that if we truly have a golden generation...it is offically wasted. I noticed it was wasted last fall when they couldn't beat a struggling Germany 3-1 and confirmed it when Colombia beat them 5-1. I'm calling it now. Urugay's bench will beat USA on Monday. Lalas himself of all people is questioning Berhalter's return, but it's too little too late (I hope everyone here throws it in his face every chance you get). I say it's too little to late that because Berhalter is not going anwhere. I'll say it againg, BERHALTER IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. So, if you have a soccer power favorite team, a team that is capable of winning a world cup, cheer for that team instead and don't waste your time with this one. Mine has been Germany for years now, even before they won their 4th WC and it looks like they're getting back on track!
