I didn’t have MTV, grew up on a farm so no cable just three channels :). I also bought the piano sheet music lol to play it on repeat and imitate every single voice! It’s an instant difference between the 80s and today … I couldn’t just pull up the video online and “watch on repeat” … it was mostly not possible and a huge effort! Made this with all these stars so special … to catch the video and see them all was pure LUCK. At slumber parties we would play it over and over and then put on a performance where we split up the parts and played the part of each musical star. A WONDERFUL and very memorable part of my childhood- this song. Adore your comment about being proud and excited for him while he reacts and recognizes so many people :) just lovely!

I agree with you 100%. I read somewhere, that John Denver very much wanted to be a part of this, but was not asked to join these other great voices. If they had wanted to include all possible great voices at the time, mid-1980s; then, including John Denver would have made perfect sense. It was said by someone close to John Denver, it hurt him the rest of his life not to be asked to be included.

@@sandyleewhite It's been quite a while since I read about it. I believe John Denver's management contacted someone, who was arranging for the singers to participate. To me, even if they didn't give him a solo spot, he certainly should have been with the others for group choral parts.

Yes! The legendary Ms. Ross herself! Let's not forget the brilliant James Ingram at 2:23 & 9:17. He was one of the all-time best singers with an amazing & emotive voice. It's strange that he's not as well known today, since he was such a huge star back then & had so many big hits, including one of the most tender & touching lyrics ever written in the #1 hit song "I Don't Have The Heart." Sadly, James is one of several artists in the vid who is no longer with us. BTW, he probably wins the prize for having worked with the most people in that room than anyone else there. Long before he became famous, he was a background singer for Quincy Jones (5:49), the Pointer Sisters (in the chorus, at 6:20), & Michael Jackson himself. He had a duet with Kenny Rogers (2:11) & Kim Carnes (4:25) that was a big hit in 1984 - a year before this song. Being a church kid from Akron, Ohio, he was also a great musician & played many instruments, including playing piano on one of Ray Charles' big hits back in the 1970s. He was also a great songwriter. He co-wrote one of MJ's biggest hits, _"P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)."_ He won many awards for singing & writing, including several Grammys, & received several Oscar nominations for various songs he did for a number of movies, such as his huge hit with Linda Ronstadt _"Somewhere Out There"_ from the hit movie _An American Tail._ He was a big deal all through the '80s & '90s, & continued performing to packed venues, here & abroad, until his passing in 2019 from brain cancer, at the age of 66. He'll always be loved, admired, & remembered by those of us who love great music! 💯 ❤ 🎵 🎶 🎧

Easily your best reaction. A year or two ago you wouldn’t of know who any of them were! Great job 👏 The famine in Ethiopia was in 1984 and a charity song was made at Christmas time in the uk called ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ Well worth a reaction too. It features lots of British & Irish singers you’ll recognise. As it’s a Christmas song you may want to wait a few months, up to you lol. The USA for Africa song came out in 1985, the same year as Live Aid. I don’t know about the US but here in the uk there have been many different charity songs over the years including 3 other versions of Do They Know It’s Christmas?!

@daedalron3 жыл бұрын
That's incorrect. Lionel Richie was part of the project pretty much from the start. It's just that when Michael Jackson learned about the project, he told Richie he didn't want to just sing it, he wanted to be a part of the writing too. They agreed, and planned wrote the song together. It's just that MJ is MJ, and (according to MJ's sister) wrote pretty much the whole song by himself, before Richie arrived. Kind of like "let's prepare something so that we have a base version for when Richie arrives, so that we can work on it immediately", but the base version was so good that it's pretty much the final version.

On the 23rd October 1984 the BBC news had a report by corresponent Michael Buerk on the developing famine in Ethiopa, following three years of drought and a civil war. Up to seven milliion people were at risk of starvation if nothing was done. Watching the news that evening was Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the Irish punk band the Boomtown Rats. Bob was so moved by the news report and the apparent lack of action by the various affluent economies of the world, that he felt he had to do something. As a musician he thought perhaps he could organise a charity record to raise funds to send food to the millions affected by the famine. With the help of his friend Midge Ure (the lead singer of Scottish pop band Ultravox) Bob bullied and cajoled as many famous pop stars as he could to perform on the record. Being based in the UK and wanting to get the record released asap, Bob and Midge mostly concentrated on rounding up bands based in the UK, with the proviso that anyone who participated gave their time for free. The recording took one day, the 25th November 1984, and the 'super group' was named Band Aid, and the song called Do They Know It's Christmas. Included in the recording were bands and musicians such as Kool & the Gang, Bono from U2, Phil Collins, Banarama, Boy George & Culture Club (Bob famously phoned Boy George, who was in New York at the time, and told him to get his arse onto the next Concorde flight to London), Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, George Michael, Sting, Paul Weller, Status Quo. The single was released on the 3rd December 1984 and went straight to number 1 in the UK. It sold over 2 million copies worldwide. USA For Africa was co-ordinated by Harry Belafonte and Ken Kragen, inspired by the success that Bob and Band Aid had had in the UK, but this time using the cream of American talent at that time. The song We Are The World was recorded on the 21st January 1985, and released on the 7th March 1985. Bob Geldof travelled to Ethiopia to see how the funds raised by Band Aid were being spent, and realised that what had been raised should not be a one-off contribution. So using the same drive, blarney, bullying and downright fibs, he cajoled the biggest bands of the early Eighties to perform in two synchronised concerts to carry-on the fund raising for the millions affected by the famine - one in London and one in Philadelphia, for the first time using multiple satillites to live stream live concerts to virtually every country in the world. Live Aid took place on the 13th July 1985. Bob Geldof has since become an activist for sustainable development to help the poorest in Africa. He has also been given an honorary knighthood by the Queen for his charitable work. The BBC report can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joqym5JshL6ogMU It's not an easy watch.
