Confetti has replaced snow in New York's Times Square as the people of the Big Apple saw in 2001.
Hundreds of thousands of revellers cheered as the crystal ball dropped, ringing in the year 2001 in the eastern United States.
Every year on December 31st, cheering revellers in Times Square joined by more than one billion television viewers around the world count down the final seconds of the year as the world famous Times Square New Year's Eve Ball descends 77 feet in 60 seconds.
Designed by Waterford Crystal, the crystal-covered ball is 6 feet in diameter and weighs 1,070 pounds.
Former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali was given the honor of pressing the button that sent the shimmering ball down a pole atop One Times Square, lighting a 7-foot-high (2-metre-high) "2001."
