Prosecution and defence lawyers at the O-J Simpson trial have apologised (Thursday) after an angry courtroom clash.
Prosecutor Marcia Clark and defence lawyer F. Lee Bailey lost their tempers over whether the defence had tried to fabricate claims of racism against Detective Mark Fuhrman.
Judge Lance Ito told the court that they went "beyond the bounds of professional conduct" during yesterday's (Wednesday) outbursts.
A senior Los Angeles police detective then gave evidence, saying that he looked for a second glove but saw only one glove at the murder scene.
First, Clark apologised to Bailey.
SOUNDBITE:
"I don't like to engage in that sort of exchange. I think it's unseemly, I think that it's bad for the entire profession and I do extend to Mr Bailey my apology for the extreme nature of the exchange yesterday. I don't anticipate that happening again, and I think that we will all, from this day forwards, conduct ourselves as professionals, seasoned professionals that we all are."
SUPER CAPTION: Marcia Clark, Prosecutor
Bailey then apologized to Clark, but saved his kindest words for Ito. He told Ito he was sorry for causing the judge any criticism for the outbursts, in which Clark called Bailey a liar and Bailey called Clark shrill.
SOUNDBITE:
"My apology, my most profound apology is directed at the court. I've been doing this for 40 years, I was caught off guard with that accusation, the reaction was less restrained and less professional that it should have been and the thing that pains me the most is any criticism that has been directed at the court because of conduct of counsel, in my view, you're one of the finest trial judges I've ever had the privilege to appear before."
SUPER CAPTION: F. Lee Bailey, Defense Lawyer
The cross examination of Fuhrman briefly resumed after the apologies.
Then Lieutenant Frank Spangler replaced Detective Fuhrman on the witness stand. He backed up Fuhrman's story, telling the court that Fuhrman was rarely alone and had never picked up a glove. He also testified that he looked at the murder scene from several angles searching for a second glove but couldn't find one.
Jurors were not in court for Wednesday's outburst or for the apologies Thursday.

If it was any other Judge, lawyers on both sides would have been held in contempt.

I think either Cochran, Bailey or Scheck would've spent a weekend in prison for contempt. Ito should've barred race or any other baseless speculations or allegations like Judge Fujisaki later did in the civil trial. That was why Fuhrman's use of the n-word was deemed irrelevant and his discovery of the glove was deemed admissable because of the 14 officers who said they saw only one glove before Fuhrman arrived, and that was how the Goldmans' lawyer Daniel Petrocelli got the defence microbiologist John Gerdes to admit that there was no blood contamination in this particular case. OJ did it, plain and simple. And the self entitled monkeys can fuck off.

+Zak Francis You're delusional. Sadly, this case wasn't about the facts, it wasn't about the DNA evidence. It was about race... why because OJ defense team turned it into a race issue. And that's why he got off. He killed them plain and simple.

+Eamonn Oriain Not so plain and simple, the biggest mistake made by the prosecution is allowing the glove to be tried on by OJ, there were no boots found, no knife or a gun, the race card they played was because the evidence could have been planted by Fuhrman who was a racist. So there you have it.

Ito actually had an impeccable career, plus he’s a good man but he mishandled the OJ case. It was his courtroom, he let the case get out of hand but in Ito’s defense there was a lot of outside influence and ramifications. The defense did the only thing they could, and with the jurors having an average IQ of 80 there was no way to convict OJ of the murders he committed. Ito has only himself to blame, he ruined any chance Ron & Nicole had at justice. Regardless of Ito’s mishandling of his courtroom, the black jurors were never going to convict OJ, even if OJ was caught on camera committing the murder. Hate to say it but Fuhrman was right, he just went about it the wrong way. He should have never been put on the stand, was a huge mistake. Fuhrman should have moved to another planet, how can he say all those things and still have a public life.

Saying black people would’ve never convicted OJ is a cop out. They absolutely would’ve convicted him if his guilt was proven beyond reasonable doubt but there was reasonable doubt raised a million times in that trial. When you hear the man that was responsible for collecting the evidence take the 5th when asked if he planted or manufactured the evidence, that right there is honestly all the reasonable doubt you need. That’s not saying he did plant it but it’s sure as hell not saying he didn’t either

@@jamiethomas5849 There was not reasonable doubt raised, there was an interesting story, nothing more. It's very obvious they fall for J.C. words, 4 hours debating an extraordinary long trial? Less than 4 hours? You can tell they voted based on feeling, they can blame the prosecution for their decision all they want, they let a double murderer get away with it.

I think from OJ's defence team, the only lawyer who knew OJ did it but truly did not care at all about the victims was F. Lee Bailey. At least Johnnie Cochran made a statement after the trial that no one in the black community believes in murder and their hearts have gone out to the families from day 1. He had the decency to at least do that, in his own way atoning for what he did, even though it was his job. Bailey seemed like the truly emotionless one, as if he was only interested in his fee, feeling no sympathy for Ron or Nicole. No wonder he got disbarred.

Bailey's job wasn't to prove OJ didnt kill her. Bailey's job was to prove that the prosecution did not present a case for murder without a reasonable doubt. Manslaughter? Thats an entirely different story. But the prosecution chose pre-meditated murder. That was their choice. And it was Bailey's job to prove that they didn't have a case.

It was because of Furman and being simply racist and ironically the defendant was black, which made a strong possibility that Furman planted the evidence, Furman tried to destroy audio records so Simpson wouldnt get acquited because of his racist endeavours.

We all know what happened that night. Do you? This answer is you don't, but you heard from someone who heard from someome who heard from someone that Fuhrman planted the glove, so decided "Yeah, OK, I'll believe this terrible baseless accusation against this innocent detective!" Similar to the words James Gunn used to defend Chris Pratt against the wokies not long ago. The same logic obviously applied here too regarding Fuhrman.
