The Oval Office became the central place of every American president since the beginning of the 20th century- It’s a tradition for every incoming president to change the décor in the Oval Office- from the upholstery to the wallpapers. The process is meant to reflect a president’s individual personality and intentions in office, as well as putting their own stamp on the world’s most illustrious room-
It also reflects how the president sees and represents their own country and how they display the sovereignty of the US to the dignitaries of other countries- as the room is used to meet them and share important messages with the citizens. The Oval Office isn’t just for show- Just like any other office, the presidents also use it for day-to-day work and meetings with the staff.
As part of their 50th-anniversary celebrations, American Home Shield decided to look back at the Oval Office’s evolution from 1909 to 2021. In 1909- during the West Wing expansion- William Howard Taft decided to move his office from the Roosevelt Room into what’s now arguably the most iconic seat of power in the world.

I am a history nerd so trust me here - I love this type of stuff but there area a LOT of errors in this video. The offices from Taft to Hoover were in a completely different building that was demolished by Franklin Roosevelt and a completely different West Wing Building (with a resized and relocated Oval Office) was constructed in 1934. The first Oval Office layout (1913 building) only had windows behind the president’s desk, NO GLASS DOORS OR WINDOWS WERE ON THE LEFT SIDE of the original Oval as this animation shows. This animation keeps the same layout for the original and current Oval Office which is completely wrong. Kennedy’s office is totally wrong. He had a light blue carpet & drapes for a nautical themed Oval Office. In November 1963 his wife Jackie wanted to see what a red carpet would look like so when the first couple left for a two day Texas Tour on November 21st 1963 the folks at the White House changed the carpet and drapes to red to see if JFK would like it. Very sadly President Kennedy was murdered in front of his wife the next day in Dallas, Texas. JFK would never even get to see his “red Oval Office.” When he returned to the White House he was in a casket. Very sad.

By pausing and using my arrow keys to forward and backward, I was able to flip easily between versions and really find interesting changes. One of the most interesting things to me is who used other presidents' pieces. Biden kept Trumps drapes and brought back Clinton's rug. Carter kept most of Ford's things, just rearranged them. Interesting that no one had a seating arrangement around the fireplace till Kennedy. We might guess that was Jackie's doing.

Fascinating, Carter not only made a sitting area at the far end of the oval office, the norm after Kenedy made that a first, but also chose to place a couch and some chairs in front of his desk to allow ppl he was talking to to be more comfortable. How thoughtful and kind of him. He would have been the only considerate president in this aspect if Trump hadn’t done a half hearted attempt at something similar with a row of four chairs in front of his desk. Carter and Trump have something in common, they both made space for ppl to SIT in front of the president’s desk. Cool vid.

My only comment is about the Resolute desk. The front panel was ordered by FDR to block the view of his leg braces but in this it seems to come and go. Also, there were many administrations where it was substituted with a different desk. Here is a description from Wikipedia. The Resolute desk was received at the White House on November 23, 1880, and shortly thereafter was moved to the second floor. It stayed in the President's Office and President's Study until the White House Reconstruction from 1948 to 1952. After the reconstruction, it was placed in the Broadcast Room where Dwight D. Eisenhower used it during radio and television broadcasts. Jackie Kennedy rediscovered the desk and had it brought to the Oval Office in 1961. The desk was removed from the White House after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and went on a traveling exhibition with artifacts of the Kennedy Presidential Library. It was then put on display in the Smithsonian Institution. President Jimmy Carter brought the desk back to the Oval Office in 1977, where it has remained since, save that George H. W. Bush used the C&O desk in the Oval Office but kept the Resolute desk in the White House. The desk has been modified twice. Franklin Roosevelt requested the addition of a door with the presidential seal to conceal his leg braces and a safe, but it was not installed until 1945, after his death. A 2-inch-tall (5.1 cm) plinth was added to the desk in 1961 and replaced in 1986.

As a dude who worked in the Trump White House I need to make a correction. The portrait of Andrew Jackson was actually hanged in Trumps Oval Office, not Biden's. But seriously, fantastic work!!!!

The JFK one- with that red rug- was actually the redesign that was going on when he was assassinated. Before that he was still using part of the Truman/Eisenhower color scheme. (Jackie had altered some aspects, and of course JFK added his personal objects and selected paintings. But then Jackie decided to redesign again.)

@nollyfkennedy
@nollyfkennedy 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewcutler1380 not long, I think just until early 1964. But he'd already changed the desk. Here's an excerpt from an article from Medium about the same day of the assassination and redecoration of the Office: “It was certainly too much too fast for anyone in the West Wing that tragic afternoon; no one even seemed to know, until seeing the carpet, that the Oval Office was even being redecorated. Advisor Bundy: “Oh my God, they’re putting scarlet carpets in the President’s office! We must stop it.” Daniel Patrick Moynihan, an assistant labor secretary, thought “It looked as though they knew a new President was coming in.” Photographs were taken for posterity and the late president’s belongings were removed. Mrs. Kennedy would see the blood-red carpet and her husband’s office for a few moments the next day.”

Little weird that it took up to JFK for someone to decide there should be a couple of sofas and a coffee table, not only for meetings, but to fill up space!

In a sense JFK was a modern man of the new families that came out of WW2. Having the office carry a more live in feel does kinda make sense. It also gives ambassadors and other workers in the white house the feeling of something that isn't threatening or cold. Having the Office feel like a living room or meeting room does make sense and lets down the guard of people as well.
