The White House is made of sandstone and has to be painted white, which was the cheapest paint, at the time. The White House was gutted during the Truman Restoration and certain moldings were saved, the rest was buried somewhere in the area. It was rebuilt, after iron was used to carry the load. The furniture has been collected over time.

I visited Washington DC, back in 2011, for an award ceremony for my daughter. One of Mitch McConnell's interns gave us the grand tour of the capitol building. While I cannot confirm the existence of underground bunkers, there is, an awesome underground railway system, that connects many buildings, including the White House. It's used to transport government workers, unaffected by traffic above ground.

Back in the early 1990s, I used to work in Washington DC as a lead Computer Technician, for the largest supplier of AT-style computers to the DC area. Every day, the business that I worked for ran a full-page advertisement in the _Washington_ _Post._ Back at that time, work had just started on what would eventually become the Holocaust Museum. As a construction site goes, the Holocaust Museum construction site had to be one of the strangest construction sites that I ever saw. All around it, there was a chain link fence, but inside the fence, the entire site was actually A PIT that was "dug down" nearly 4-stories deep. In fact, while construction was in-progess, the local Washington DC news reported that a full-grown tree, which happened to be right on the fence "line", toppled over and fell into the pit. Whenever I would walk by the construction site, I always suspected that the DEEP pit was eventually going to connect with a network of concealed, underground tunnels, and that the Holocaust Museum was actually just a "cover story" for creating a network of hidden, underground tunnels. IF such a tunnel network exists, beneath the Holocaust Museum, then I suspect that the tunnels connect with the White House. Keep in mind, I am just guessing.

Back in the 1980s, and earlier, you could literally walk up to the White House and get a tour. The entrance was at the East Wing, and you'd go through airport style security. Obviously there was usually a bit of a wait. But you would get a tour of the lower levels of the main residence, including the Red Room, Blue Room, Green Room, the State Dining Room, and the East Room. You'd exit through the main corridor and the main front entrance. I did this as a teenager in 1987 when I was in Washington, DC with a church group. While we didn't see him, Ronald Reagan had come back to the White House in his limo, and took the elevator up to the private residence while we were on the tour.

If i were to design myself a bunker I'd want an escape route out of the bunker, I bet they planned for this, If the above ground got destroyed and could no longer get out that way, either a road underground or railway going away to somewhere to get out, probably even multiple exits for recon or just encase the bunker gets cracked and radiation leaked into it, or blasts knocked out too much of the air filtration or power generators and it became unviable to stay there and had to be abandoned.

I’ve visited the White House 8 times. Each visit just as exciting as the first. I was given a private tour once when an ex boyfriend of mine was working for a former administration. The congressional tours begin quite early in the morning and you have to arrive around 8 a.m.. When you enter the East Wing, it’s somewhat equal to going through airport security. You walk along a colonnade until you reach the doors that actually enter the ground floor of the mansion. You’ll get to peek into various rooms and see various paintings of former First Ladies. Then you’ll walk up a flight of stairs, turn to your right and you’ll be in the famous East Room where dinners and entertainment take place. In this room you’ll see the oldest object in the White House, the famous painting of George Washington that Dolly Madison saved as the British were approaching to burn the mansion in 1812. My favorite room in the White House is the beautiful Green Room. I’ve always admired the coffee urn sitting in the middle of a table. The first time you visit, you’ll realize you’re actually in the White House, and think of all the history that took place here. I’ve always thought as I stood in the middle of the Cross Hall, looking left to right, that it isn’t really that large a place. As I’ve left through the North doors, I didn’t want to leave, I’ve always wanted to see more. I’ve always wished I could attend a state dinner.

I visited the White House in 1968 enroute from my Army AIT to Vietnam. I was impressed at beauty inside and most of all how clean it was. Just the art works alone were magnificent. I learned much later that they are rotated and often changed out with changes in administration. I signed the guest list. I didn’t see any doors that said no admittance or secret tunnels. At the time, all the phones were rotary dial and executive black.
