Highlights as Michael Phelps wins his record breaking 19th Olympic Medal as the USA win the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay Gold at the Aquatics Centre in Stratford.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Swimming is harder to train for, the number of medals an individual gets isn't a representation of the difficulty of the sport. The reason swimming can be dominated by 1 individual like Phelps, is because of the fact humans are land mammals, running is a lot more talent reliant where as a humans overall "weakness" in the water gives an advantage to those who are willing to train harder/more. I have several more points if your still not convinced.

At what?You do realize that Phelps was rank #1 in the 200 Freestyle ahead of Agnel before the Olympics?He didn't compete to ease his work load cause he swims Im's Butterfly and relays. Agnel swam 2 releys and 2 individual races.Phelps swam in 7.Agnel is a wonderful and talented swimmer.Awesome really. But Phelps is the greatest swimmer ever EVER.Hell he is the greatest Olympian EVER.

The only way that it is easier to win more medals in swimming is if you qualify in more than one event. Then when you do qualify for swimming events, you just don't swim it once. You have your heat races, semi-finals and then your finals. So I think that Micheal is a great Olympian. Rowing is a sport but really, only one event per Olympics. You don't have days spent on the event like you do in swimming. And you probably don't have where you might have to do 5 events in one day either.

It's harder. When you're swimming, you gotta give it all even though you can't breathe that often. In running, you can breathe as hard as you want.

how? phelps got more medals in the london olypics. ANd has about 20 more medals then agnel has. AND Phelps has broken more world records, and he swims more races, whereas agnel only swims frestyle, phelps is world class at freestyle, buterfly, and backstroke. Phelps is the better all around athlete, and has more medals by far than angel. Clearly he is better

+spdyrodriguez1 Ha. "End of Story". It's hard to be the best at anything. No one is comparing it to running. Usain Bolt can't swim as fast as Phelps and Phelps can't run as fast as Bolt.

i wouldn't say he was the greatest Olympian, hes definitely the best swimmer EVER, and 19 golds in 3 Olympics is amazing, 6.33r per each Olympics, but there is Rowing where you only do 1 event per Olympics and Sir Steve Redgrave won a gold every 5 Olympics he did! He only did 1 event per Olympics and won that one event everytime. The thing with swimming is that they are many relays and individual. And its easier to win more medals in swimming than any other event

Eating a 13k calorie diet, spending 6 hours in the pool, sleeping with a special recovery suit combined with weight training is obviously much easier than running.

As like as i love phelps, I never called him as the greatest olympian. Greatest swimmer maybe but we should not judge by the amount of medals. Swimming has so many events so you can sort of overlap. But you can't deny other great athletes like Carl Lewis, usain bolt, Kim rhode, allyson Felix and many others. They are also great athletes who deserve the same recognition as phelps.
