I greatly admire America for the respect you show for your flag and country. I was married to an American for several years and made sure we flew a flag outside all the time. In the UK there is not the same respect at all sadly, our 'Tomb of the Unknown ' is unguarded? Our servicemen and women fought and died as yours did but we chose not to respect them as you do? As a Veteran i find this sad and unacceptable, I have served beside Americans many times and feel safe with them watching my back. To all brothers in arms, God Bless America.

A short while ago, my brother, his wife and I visited Arlington as a part of a busload of Masons from Cape Cod. We observed this ceremony and then the graves of the Kennedy's. We separated from the group to seek out the relocated gravesites of Major Audie L. Murphy and our cousin, General Richard Searcy Sweet. Dick was the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry at the beginning of the Tet Offensive on February 3rd, 1968 at Hue City as described in the book "The Lost Battalion of Tet - Breakout of the 2/12th Cavalry at Hue."" by his Adjutant, Captain Charles A. Krohn. Whenever I see this Tomb Ceremony, I think of Dick and our last visit. May they all rest in His Eternal Sunshine. SMIB

1%... that's how many Americans have ever served in the US Military.... Now consider that the percentage of those who actually engaged in direct or indirect battle is somewhere around 10% of that number. We currently have a larger relative percentage of Veterans who have served in such conditions. In peacetime we will have fewer and fewer. Are they then the only ones who understand? I ask this not as some rhetorical...but because I don't know that you're wrong... but I know that there are a great many who served... who did so willing to be there when and if battle was called for... I know too that there were family who worried for their sons and daughters, sisters and brothers and for their Fathers and Mothers. They all lived in a quiet yet hopeful agony... and I don't know a lot about the sacrifices they made... but I know they made them. WE served, but not so we could LORD it over others... "When I consider how my light is spent, Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide, And that one Talent which is death to hide Lodged with me useless, though my Soul more bent To serve therewith my Maker, and present My true account, lest he returning chide; “Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?” I fondly ask. But patience, to prevent That murmur, soon replies, “God doth not need Either man’s work or his own gifts; who best Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state Is Kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed And post o’er Land and Ocean without rest: They also serve who only stand and wait.” Milton the "One Talent which is death to hide"... in my mind refers to the human choice to die for a country or a cause a God or a loved one ... a comrade in arms and lodged with me useless means the willingness to do something yet never called to show it. So I don't know if what you say is so... if only those who were among a Band of Brothers can truly appreciate it... but I know there are SO MANY who would have gladly done so.

Years ago, I met a decorated American war veteran who was living in Canada. He came here because he had a lot of Canadian friends who had served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean conflict and the Viet Nam war. My friend was from Arkansas. He volunteered for the Korean conflict and Viet Nam where he was promoted to Seargent. This is a beautiful ceremony. If I ever get to go see it, I will remain at attention throughout. Hats off to the volunteers who mount a guard detail for the unknown soldiers of all conflicts! Although I wasn't born at the time, let us remember the American Volunteers who joined the Canadian military during the first and second world wars. Many never returned home. Thank you for your valuable contribution!

I was there several years ago. I cried throughout the changing of the sentinel. Thinking of all the soldiers who fought and lost their lives for our country, the ultimate sacrifice. The observer's were very quiet. Seeing it on KZbin is nothing like being there.

How many of you who criticize noticed the respect given in front of each tomb during the placing of flags? No loud clicking of heels or at the coming together of shoes...it's called reverence and respect which this entire ceremony(not circus) is about. It's so easy to criticize when you have never walked in someone else's shoes. And the Army and Marine criticism needs to be put in check. We serve under the same flag for the same country. every flag was placed so the flag left the staff at the exact same place. All three flags were exactly the same as they lay. You could put a full glass of water on their shoulders and they wouldn't spill a drop. Watch the shoulders when they walk, no motion, only forward.

pretty touching, a lot of younger people there you'd usually think as part of the apathetic crowd standing up out of respect for the moment they're witnessing, even though they weren't verbally told to do so. It's easy to criticize a younger generation, but they're as human as older generations. Things are a bit different for them, but they're not morally bankrupt like they're unfairly made out to be.

This is an old comment, but I feel like I must say something. I am part of Gen Z, and I have had my fair share of older generations chastising me for "being lazy", "not knowing the hardships we've faced", as well as the oh so common "back in my day". When I hear these things, it makes me sad. Older generations seem to look down on my generation, as well as Millennials, seemingly because we haven't faced the kinds of things they have faced. This is true, but maybe that is because the hardships haven't come, at least, until now. I would also like to say that no, not all of the older generations are like this, and no, not all of the younger generations aren't bad, on both sides there is bad, we just have to work together to make more good than bad. Also, for any entitled older people, age does not mean wisdom, and for younger people, age does not mean innocence or lack of understanding and empathy.

It's the M14EBR (ceremonial version with wood instead of composite). It's still in service as marksman riffle. The blue uniform look ok-ish not the best. I like the Army Green more than Blue because the Blue make us look like marching band.

Joseph Weaver the M1 was and is a terrific rifle and was very instrumental to victory in WWII, however, the guards do carry an M14. It is stated so in the FAQ section of tombguard.org.

The tomb of the unknown is not just for the families that never got to bury their dead, it’s for all those poor souls that died scared and alone on the battlefield but still fought and died, proudly to serve their country and to protect everyone they love. That’s why the Sentinel is so important, they’re not just guarding the tomb they are symbolically comforting those who had no one in their last moments on earth.

This sense of respect for their fallen soldiers, should be taught to respect all peoples for peace. The other countries in the world who honor their fallen not use the same respect for these military. Great respect for the values of this nation. We should all take a leaf

Back in 2014 I was headed to the CGA in New London and made a stop in DC to see the Tomb of the Unknow. Made me really understand about the journey I was about to undertake.
