I did airborne school back in 1983, I was phobic about heights at the time, they cured me of that. The instructors were twice as mean as any drill sergeant. I remember during mock door training, we had an instructor yell “anyone of you who moves his arm, I’m going to bite it off” after that my had a muscle cramp from holding the mock static line above head for about an hour, my arm slight moved, the instructor grabbed my arm and bit it, the slapped my helmet and got noise to noise and started yelling. Now I never mentioned the incident to anyone. At the end of the day the senior TAC NCO an E8 who was in charge of all the instructors called me over and asked me if I had gotten my shots? I was clueless what he was getting at, so I yelled unclear SGT. Airborne. (We were not allowed to use yes or no, just clear or unclear). The senior TAC then responded your shots for the dog that bite you.

For all of us Grunts, coming in from Sandhill, Airborne School wasn’t shit. The Black Hats loved us. I would eat two Jelly Krispy Kreme donuts every morning 😂. Was cool going through with different branches. Our stick leader was a Marine Captain and nobody could understand him, when he called cadence. The guy next to me, in my stick, was Air Force Para Rescue. He was the hardest guy I ever met in the military. Son of gun would do pushups on his knuckles in the gravel.

Earned my wings (5 jumps) August 1979, it was very hot & humid at Benning and we had to run anywhere when outside. They had run through showers, and tubs filled with ice water for hyperthermia during training. Landed in Vicenza, Italy in Sept.'79 and joined my brothers of the 509th Inf. ABN for the next three years. ETS'd in '82 with 39 total jumps. Huey, Chinook, C130, and C141 Starlifter (rush). Those were the days, and cherish every moment of it!

In the 60s an Army Sergeant was explaining to a field full of Marines how they would be boarding C123s and doing low jumps from 800 feet. When he asked if there were any questions, one Marine immediately raised his hand and asked of they could jump from 500 feet instead. The Sergeant replied, "Son, at 500 feet your parachutes wouldn't have time to deploy properly". The Marine then said, "Oh, we get parachutes?"

There actually was a case in ww2 when a unit of Ghurkas was asked to provixe volunteers for a parachute operation behind japanese lines, half of the men hesitantly put their hands up. Their commanding officer clarified that they would be getting parachutes and immediately the other half of the men volunteered
