On this day in 1897, in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, music history was made. This town outside of Philadelphia was the setting for the first performance of John Philip Sousa's iconic march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Later that same year, the first ever recording of the march would hold the #1 spot on the national charts for seven straight weeks. Nearly a century later in 1987, the piece would be named the “Official March of the United States of America.”
