USB Stopped Working on a 2018 Ford Expedition

2019 Ford Explorer xlt While on a 700 mile return trip from vacation. “USB fire detected” came up on the heads up unit while driving. Changed cords and the same thing. Plugged into the arm rest usb… all was good. So I guess replace the council usb like you did in your video… thanks for any update you can give!

I’ve never seen that message. I’ve seen damaged USB ports and even pins bent and shorted together on USB ports, but fire detected is a new one on me. You’re in uncharted water.

With lack of special tools, is there a trick to remove the Sync3 USB module in the very tight space.

Usually I just try to get under them with a pocket screw driver. They just snap in.

I’m not sure if it would be the exact same hub, but close. At some point they went to physically smaller hubs.

Everything works but once I plug in a USB plug then the screen goes blank

That’s a new one. Have you tried other USB devices? Any USB device does this?

You have to get a screw driver or door panel tool under the edge and pry up.

I have a similar issue where if I hit a bump in the road, the usb will disconnect from my phone (via usb cable)

It could be the usb on the car or the connector on it, but I would try a different usb cable first. Also make sure the port on the phone where the cable plugs in isn’t full of lint causing the connector to not fully seat

@@CarShopTalk I actually changed phones so it is a brand new phone AND I changed the USB cable. I tried using the USB port in the center console - and i have the same exact issues even with the new USB cable. How do I check the connector to the USB on the car? Do you have a video for it? I am new to this vehicle so any assistance will be appreciated.

@@ncmathura The media hubs usually just pop out if you get behind the edge with a small bezel and there’s usually two connectors, a mini usb for data and a two wire connector with power and ground. I’ve never had a loose connector or pin at a media hub, but it’s always a possibility. I have seen a few media hubs fail, but none of them were going over bumps. A bad solder joint on a board etc, it’s always a possibility.

My 2016 Ford Expedition giving me intermittent phone charge & not displaying the google map from my samsung phone. I'm wondering if the 2016 is similar enough to the 2018 and curious thoughts???

The Google map did previously display, right? Yes, it’s the same system.

@@michellelatowsky3575 I’m assuming you’ve tried a master reset? If not, I doubt it will fix it, but it’s worth a try. I’ve seen USB hubs or sync modules cause that problem, and unfortunately there’s not a good way to determine which it is. I usually keep a couple of USB hubs in my box and just plug one in to rule it out in a situation like that.

Just had the same issue on an 18 explorer but the USB hub didn't fix it....hence I'm on here looking for common problems...hmmm

No charging from the USB ports or sync doesn’t recognize devices plugged into USB? Or both?

@@dant8213 that’s probably where you’re headed. Make sure you have 12v on the yellow / blue wire at the connector at the back of the media hub. I think white / blue? Is the ground.

@@CarShopTalk found out the usb from the radio to the usb hub was cut clean a few inches below the radio....would love to know how that happened...😆 🤣
