Hey everyone! Today's video is the 5th installment of the Use it or Lose it (a.k.a What Still Works) and I'm starting to go through my pencils! Today I'm featuring the Stabilo CarbOthello pencils.

When it comes to media -- the more multi the merrier. I love the results I get from aquarelle pencils on wet paper, and waxy crayons laid down before the wash. Keep up the good work Irit.

The CarbOthellos are lovely pastel pencils. Out of all the ones I have tried, these are my favorites. I love your painting, it looks so colorful and totally amazing! 😻 My kitty also goes through the trash, especially when my husband and I are sleeping or working. Not so much because he is really interested in what's in there, but because he knows that if he does that, one of us will go and bribe him with something to get him to stop. I actually think that since he moved in with us in 2014, there was not a single night that we managed to sleep all the way through, and that has worn us down and now we just hand over the treats so he will shut up and let us go back to sleep. He had a really rough life before and we wanted to make sure that he will feel totally comfortable and at home here, so we let him get away with everything and ended up creating a monster. 🙀

I have a set of 24 and a few vintage open stock colors in neutrals. I haven't used them in a few years, but they are watersoluble and now I can't wait to play with them with watercolor. Thanks for the inspiration!

Wow 🤩 some good tips for using pastel pencils with watercolors and maybe these Carb Othello, in particular. Don’t feel bad about buying a set with a bunch of colors you don’t really use. I think many of us do that sometimes (the pictures look like “candy”)and then we don’t have to think about which individual colors we might want....especially if we’re looking at them online. I like pastel pencils and watercolors but don't use them together so this was fun. Went googling for the Carbothello - there are a lot of videos by Jenny Manno - is she the bad influence?

Beautiful Irit! Ok you didn’t touch the pastel pencils at all when applying them after watercolor. I defiantly need to keep to few of my favorite colors on my desk. I love the pop of color you got with them and I don’t need to ever touch them.😂 This is such great series. I’m playing with things I have in stash that I wouldn’t have thought to use with watercolor. Thanks so much!

Lovely painting! I love the bright colours and patterns. I'm intrigued by these pencils, but wonder, don't they rub off easily? Do you use anything on top of your finished painting to seal them?

You'd have to use a fixative, like with any kind of hard/soft pastel, but they are not as messy as soft pastels. Smudgable but still most of the product stays put.

I have a mental allergy to soft pastels, just like you instinctively dislike Mijello. They are great, as long as I don't have to interact with them. :-D

I have heard so many bad things about Carbothello, that they are dangerous, toxic etc. Of course it was after I bought the full set! But I have never regretted it, and I love them so much. They work so well with watercolours, similarly like Derwent pastel pencils.

Any truth to that? Did you find information supporting those claims? Would be interesting to know. Glad you're enjoying yours!

@@iritlandgraf No, not really - I tried the check the Californian legislature (I heard that at some point California deemed the pencils as carcinogen) but was not lucky. It was just weird that so many people over the internet were saying the same thing... but in the end, I don't think that would really be true, because then it would not be just California.

You didn't properly prime the Jane Davenport watercolor crayons. You need to scratch off that white coating. That's why they didn't release any pigment. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

There was no white coating and watercolors crayons are not oil sticks, they don't need priming 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
