I am a 67 year old power lifter and fitness trainer. I exercise 4 times a week and I don't use whey protein from factories, 'because I don't eat refine sugar. I eat natural and fresh protein from eggs, fish, chicken and nuts and more. I do eat sugar from fruits, nature honey, stevia , dates and dark chocolate with stevia. I'm strong for my age and I'm healthy.

Who eats pure protein powder by itself. I use protein powder after weight lifting because after working out your muscle cellls are primed to receive the protein and therefore it doesn’t just float around storing fat. I also pair the protein with a good carb source and the carbs are also driven into muscle tissue. I agree about excess protein and so .8 to 1 gram per pound of body weight is adequate

Ive been wondering about this for while, there is so much out there promoting protien powder and Ive up'd my intake, yet seem to still gain the wrong type of weight. Im going to cut back on powder and see where that takes me

That's interesting food for thought. I never considered protein powders as empty calories. In my case, I eat a largely, but not 100 percent exclusive, vegetarian diet. Looking at the protein recommendations from the Harvard article I'd be woefully under my daily protein recommendations without supplementing. In fact, I probably still am even though I’ve incorporated a combination of both organic hemp and pumpkin proteins to supplement my diet as they are not as protein rich as animal sources. I don't eat soy either. I may be one of those people without a better alternative than supplementing.

Protein is not "empty" calories. If you do not eat adequate protein in your diet, a protein supplement can help maintain your health and prevent, or slow, muscle wasting.

I agreed, I tested on myself. I consumed 150 grams of whey isolate protein and 2 10 ounce ribeye steaks per day for a week. I was calorie deficient everyday by 400 calories and felt tire and sleepy.

I have observed the same in my practice.

Your claims about protein being "empty" calories is SO wrong its dangerous to the health and well being of others. Everyone, please ignore her crackpot claims.

Thank you for your comments. I hope your blood work results are not too off. Very often they are reversible.

There is no comparison between the empty calories of sugar and your "empty" calories of protein. Neither are "empty" calories. The wide range of essential proteins has many many key mechanisms to maintain good health and muscle mass. Sugar/glucose, which the body makes provides fuel.

Though pure sugar and pure protein are different forms of energy, they are both free of nutrients. In this sense, protein powder is similar to sugar.

@@Dr.WenliLiu You are wrong. Protein is not similar to sugar. Any grade school biology student knows that all flesh is made of assembled proteins and lipids. Sorry, but your attempt at making an "edgy" argument is misleading, and just plain idiotic.

A general statement about protein powder being equivalent to refined carbs wrt empty calories is very misleading. It needs serious qualifications.

Protein doesn’t give energy. Only fat and carbs do that, aycarbs are the better choice because our brain and muscles thrive on carbs/sugar.

The carbon backbone of amino acids can be used for energy. However, when the nitrogen component is discarded, ammonia which is a toxic substance is produced.

I love your comment. 😀 But when it comes to nutrition, we want a team of nutrients, not a single agent, regardless a macro- or micro- nutrient. When nutrients are extracts, we better learn about the process of the extraction and know what we are really getting.
