Thank you for this! I just started sewing a few days ago and decided to go to Fabricland today to find some fabric for some beginner projects but it was so overwhelming and the staff wasn’t helpful at all - they practically scoffed at me and walked away when I said I was learning to sew and looking for material. I went over to the quilting store and felt much more welcome and found a bit of what I needed. I look forward to seeing more videos!

Kristilyn Hukalo That's sad. And that's how they lose customers. Welcome to the world of sewing! You will love it.

I am sorry you had that experience! That is just what I was thinking when I made this video. How nice that you were able to go to a quilt shop. I am so sad the one near me closed. Now my only option is online or the big store!

I know what you mean about being a beginner, or worse, not having an endless budget for supplies. Luckily, you have nice people like @Virginia Lindsay to let you know that it's totally okay to start where you are. We sewists are NOT all jerks! I have no problem with people stopping me while I'm shopping. Plenty of ladies older than ME, who have been sewing a while, who overhear us are *RUDE* and give us dirty looks when I'm explaining something to a total stranger. It's ridiculous. When we are starting out, we lack experience and knowledge, but also CONFIDENCE. I'm also super happy to help the guys out, as they normally get even worse treatment--like why are you in a fabric store? Both my grandparents could sew. Many men also helped out with war efforts, and people didn't get all hung up on who didn't know how to do what. They taught each other. Let's bring that BACK. Happy sewing to anyone who wants to sew. Period. :)

When I learned to sew, it was play. I was combining thread and fabric however it pleased me. It kept me out of Grandma's way and gave me a pleasant experience. Grandma always told me how wonderful my work was and then made suggestions for changes. I tried doll cloths after I got tired of just combining fabric and thread. I started making my own cloths in high school when I took home ech. Now I do whatever I wish.

Thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful for me, who is coming back to sewing. My goodness the fabric stash building is going strong right now!! I am getting fabrics ready to start English Paper Piecing, as well as sewing garments and eventually bags for my cross stitch and knitting projects.

At Joann, I get the home decor fabric from the dot sale section. Sometimes there are beautiful ones for as much as 70 percent off. Thanks for the video.

Very helpful video. Thanks for sharing your experience with fabrics and interfacings. The hints on knits were especially helpful. Knits are scary!

Quilting cotton is also perfect for making face masks. But a non-woven interfacing that is synthetic and fusible, is needed specifically for face masks. Before I started making them I didn't know the difference between woven and non-woven interfacing. Essentially, woven cotton interfacing is similar to fabric in that it has threads and spaces between them, whereas non-woven synthetic interfacing is a continuous very thin sheet that doesn't have pores. Just wanted to add that.

That's right, Karen! I have been using my smaller extra pieces of quilting cotton to make face masks too. And great info about the interfacing!

Virginia, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! My family gave me your Sewing to Sell book as a gift and I have been picking projects from that to give as gifts and practice my skills. I would love to see a video on proper cutting techniques, that seems to be my downfall!

I was just curious as I noticed that you did not mention any clothing for yourself with the exception of pajamas. Do you sew garments???
@gingercakesews4 жыл бұрын
I barely ever sew garments for myself. I sewed quite a bit for my kids when they were little and I mostly used woven cottons. I have made a few things from knit fabric that I wear myself- made using the Isla pattern from Made by Rae. I also wear a few kimonos I made using double gauze. But I am not a huge clothes person and I find the whole process not as fun as making bags, pillow, etc.

@@gingercakesews I agree that clothes arent as fun to make as the other stuff 😄
