Here's a simple Arpeggio Exercise you can use to build beautiful solos over gypsy jazz tunes.
It's important to apply this exercise to music so in this lesson I've showed you how it works over 'Minor Swing'.
We humans love to complicate things and come up with lot's of fancy names and ways of looking at music but this lesson gets back to the basics. It shows how you can create powerful and beautiful solos by simply playing the basic arpeggio from each chord.
Content:
0:00 - Introduction and Number 1 thing you have to do to get better at soloing is 'Play Over Tunes'
0:45 - The 3 basic chords to 'Minor Swing' and the 3 basic arpeggios Am, Dm, E7
2:30 - Here is the exercise that we apply to the 3 arpeggios from 'Minor Swing'
5:30 - News about the upcoming Gypsy Jazz Breakthrough Retreat in LA
6:45 - Demonstration of exercise over the 'Minor Swing' backing track
8:48 - Demonstration of using space between phrases and swinging the notes
Here's how to do it:
Play the basic arpeggio for each chord Am,Dm & E7
Learn the pattern descending
Learn the pattern ascending
Now play it straight along with backing track or metronome
Finally start to swing the notes and leave space between each phrase
Have fun!

Absolutely brilliant tutorial - thanks Robin! As a classical fiddler (with a few years of bluegrass thrown in) I was "brung up" on the scales and areggios - absolutely essential - the guiding lattice on which the vines of beautiful and artful music grow... However, when it came to learning guitar (some 50 years' experience now) I did it off my own bat, listening to records (1st-time around vinyl!) and copying.. working out the complexity of six strings with a dodgy B (as opposed to the simple, regular 4 string fiddle) as I went. Now, aged 60, I'm just getting into jazz (it finds you in the end) and Gypsy Jazz. Funny thing is - I always loved it, just never knew what it was! (My daughter played Clun Penguin on a Gameboy many years ago and there is a superb bit of gypsy Jazz in that game soundtrack - forgive my ignorance but is it Django??) Anyway, now starting to revisit the "classical" approach and paring everything back to the bare bones - the keys... the scales...and really enjoying starting all over again. There are plenty of videos on KZbin explaining soloing (in every genre) but this simple explanatory video takes the biscuit! Simple, basic, yet tantalisingly taunting in the slick bits played from those basic I, IV, V chord arpeggios, towards the end! Brilliant! Thanks

I'm only repeating what so many other people have said, but you have managed to make something which up until 10 minutes ago would have sounded impossibly complicated, comprehensible and , after a bit more practice, re-producible. I'm already sounding jazzier than I ever thought possible. Now i'm going to light up a Gauloises and bask in the afterglow.

Hello Robert! GREAT video. Most of the guitar videos that I watch don’t offer me very much, stuff that, while I’m by no means an expert with, cover ground I’m familiar with already. Segment by segment, this video offers more information in a very short time than most online tutorials. I’m using this with my mandolin, this gives even more gypsy feel than guitar (though I’m going to learn it on guitar as well). Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year!

Hello. For right now I rrally cant understand what you are saying at all but I really do want to learn from this contents. If I m at the level that I cant even understand what you are saying... what do you suggest to practice? Like.. I know open chord.. but you just saying hey let s play these chords at these all different frats, that s whrre I feel lost. And when you say "ok so this technique will sound like this" and just only playing the technique without explaning how it goes... I dont knkw how to understand it. Maybe im not at enough level to understand it. What should I do? Btw thank you for spreading good knowledge and hope i learn more!!

I don’t know how to say it I guess? There may only be 3 basic chords but the musical phrase ( or what ever you call it) does not end on the 3 rd chord in the progression. The resolution is in the 4 th bar and/or thd 8th. Which I think repeats the first chord. So I was confused when I first listened to your lesson and then your actual playing on the changes. I went to the piano and figured out what was going on and why I was confused. Thanks and don’t mind me.
