My Labrador puppy was absolutely the most insane puppy biter ever. I’m an experienced dog owner and I am a professional dog walker who also does many puppy visits and my OWN puppy was the worst biter I’ve ever encountered. Nothing worked for me. The long line in house, did NOT work for me. I could pull it and pull him off and he thought that was just a tug and pull and fun part of the whole biting game!! He’d bite the house line and happily then continue to work his way up to my hand!! What really worked for us was aggressive redirection with HUGE praise but also, spreading a tasty treat across my hands and fingers and praising him for LICKING my fingers and hands. So his first instinct became to lick hands to see if my hands contained a tasty treat and even when they didn’t, I’d praise him for the initial licking and then he concluded, that hands were for licking!! It was the only thing that worked to calm the biting. If you are at your wits end and have found yourself here, on yet another video that does not work for your aggressive biter, then try my method.

This is what we did with our puppy due to your channel. It helped so much. I noticed with dogs in our family who were just brought home and didn’t have a line, they would get away with poor choice behaviors so much easier. Use a house line with a new dog or a puppy to help your training.

When puppies play and nip at one another they learn the difference between playful soft nipping and hurtful biting. They’ll yelp when bitten, this teaches the biter how hard is too hard. I find that replicating the reaction with a similar sound and action (a very SOFT 3 finger “pinch”) help to train the puppy what is acceptable.

@@yourlifeisagreatstorywhen they've studied hours and hours of puppies mouthing and playing they've realised they are practicing the predatory sequence. When a puppy yelps or moves around it keeps the predatory sequence playing out. The trainer has got this spot on.

What people don’t understand is that play with their hands with dog or cat. Then they are surprised why they bite back? Never use your hands to play or to punish. Hands to feed or give love only. Hands are giving only. Then they start respecting hands and no biting. For playing interact only through a toy. Thats why leash works, not through hands but through leash. My cat never bit me, he loved my hands and seek attention to my hands, keep it warm, and kisses only. When you play with your hands, play is always associated with attacks, so they bite (even playful small bites) and it is natural. People create problems for themselves on a first place especially kids unknowingly. Pets are not toys they are companions and should be treated with respect.

This looks really good and easy. With my two months old puppy I had to hold the collar tight today as he is really going for my hands. I really hope that this didn't scare him but it seems to be working as he is now more cautious of my hands. He's still so young and I wanna make sure he understands clear boundaries but also maintaining a trustful relationship. Btw, this leash trick didn't work really well with him haha Thank you for posting all this great & valuable content. I am learning a lot from you

You can use an authoritative voice too … more than one way to train a dog. 😉 My journey started by selecting the right breed for intelligence… the rest was learning from other dog owners and going by my gut instinct. Now I get my dogs to behave by simply talking to them and it makes it so much easier to love them 😂

What I do with biting I find it works is I get a chew toy, either soft or hard, and I divert the bite to the toy. My pups bite when I try to brush em because sometimes theres an itch and they usually wanna bite their itches! So what I do it get a chew toy that is flavoured, or a soft plush and either hold it for them to bite or I stick it up and hold between my knees while the pup is on my lap. If they jump on me, I get up, cross my arms and ignore em till they sit down.

Your puppy is probably pretty big now, but there are a few things you can do: You can reward with food or play when he stops biting the line, even for just a second. That's called differential reinforcement. As you stay consistent, your puppy will learn that if he leaves the leash alone, he gets reward. You can redirect to another behavior, which you tried to do by giving the puppy toys. Now, I don't know what type of toys you gave, but consider toys that require the puppy to engage with you (so not chew toys that you just give the puppy and walk away). Being with you and getting attention from you is also a reward. Pulling and fighting toys can be really good for this.

Separate play time from training. Play shouldn't be restricted, its play, use toys instead of hands to reduce biting or stop play if they are too much. Training should be calmer and consistent, reward good options and protect against poor options. Ie. Don't wind them up and then correct them for playing like in this video, it's unfair and confusing, they are babies fgs.
@marie3988

It’s going to happen until they adjust to it not going anywhere they’ll eventually get bored of it just reinforce playtime with them not just putting toys out for them to play with her involved get that energy out don your best. I hope that helps. Having a puppy requires a lot of patience, we are developing good relationships with our little ones so we must keep that in mind it will pay off in the end. ❤ good luck to you. I have a 16 week old pup she’s a handful and more very smart girl never stops playing omg I feel like falling apart at times but I keep myself busy with consistency so it becomes habit so we have a well behaved pup down the road.

My puppy is a Chihuahua. She is so small that when try and get a hold of her collar to stop bitting she just bites my hand. I still haven’t figured out how to get her to calm down because if she bites my hand, I can’t grab her collar because it’s too close to her mouth and she’ll just bite my hand more and struggles. So, I use the house line to stop her then she just chews on that and it seems like I’m telling her to stop chewing but she still chewing and biting. She becomes fixated on biting my hand or the line. Is she learning anything if she just starts biting the line?

Ignore her, if she still doesn't stop, say loud "stop" and stare her down for a moment (be confident and show the energy that you mean it), then keep ignoring her - if nothing helps, stand up or even leave the room for a moment. She learns that if she is too much, playing stops and its unpleasant. Also some biting is good, if you show her when it hurts and is too much. Whelp/whine yourself, then immediately turn away to ignore her...same as above - act like they would act if you would (accidentally) hurt them or when they play with each other and one gets hurt....you know what I mean. That way she learns bite inhibition and when to stop. Also use a toy...for me rope toys works the best. Trying to grab her is more playing for them. Same with the leash. You can see it in the video that the dogs is not being controlled, just can't properly play or reach her anymore. That video is nonsense. When she had him on the collar finally sitting (intimidated/unsure) she praised him. What a nonsense. She praised his insecurity/moment of being intimidated in that short moment (look at his eyes and body language). Terrible. He was then only focused on the incoming treat, which he learned happens every time - he outsmarted her. That's why this "only positive" treat overdose training is questionable. Good for learning tricks. Bad for behavioral correction training.

Every dog is different. Despite not being very PC I do believe there is a place for corrective nose slapping. I have a VERY large dog, and luckily for me she is very very timid but regardless because of her size, when she was at the end of her puppyhood (5/6 months) she did show aggression just 2 or 3 times, and every single time without fault I smacked her nose, and I wasn’t even that light about it. I even kicked her one time when she growled at me and it was the ONE and only time. I am cuddled up with her right now and she is the cutest happiest gentle giant you would ever meet. But I have never regretted hitting her those few times. Always better to nip aggression in the bud
