All of us who have PHEVs at work couldn't agree more since we can all charge daily at home. No need to hoard batteries for the extremely rare occasion I drive past the battery's range. Maybe 10% of the km I put on the car have been on the range extender, and nearly all of those are on road trips, same story with the dozen or so other PHEV owners I know. And with only 15k km on the range extender maintenance is nearly non-existent over the seven or so years I've owned it. I can count on one hand how many times I have had to change the oil (I actually test it and use Red Line oils), and the water pump belt still looks brand new, not even any dry rot cracks in it like I get with my pickup from disuse. Spark plugs are iridium so they are good for over 100k km, same with the timing chain.

Hybrids are a pitiful alternative to ICE, gas only vehicles. A redundant aka dual powertrain vehicle....what a hybrid is...and the 100 computers to allow synergistic power delivery between two radically different powertrains, A profound waste of money and natural resources not to mention a Li-Ion battery in every vehicle which further disparages the planet creating such an environmental hazard nobody knows how to recycle efficiently. Consumer fuel savings pale to overall cost to manufacture a hybrid vehicle and long term maintenance and depreciation aren't close to worth it for the consumer but of course, above would require education which the public sourly lacks.

The only problem is that they are severely unaffordable unless you finance into oblivion, but current interest rates are preventing most from doing so. This was a great episode. I drive a BMW i4 and I'm very happy with it. However, the problem of public charging infrastructure remains a significant issue. The current state of EV charging is abysmal. Typically, 2 out of 4 Electrify America chargers are out of order, either broken or vandalized. Until this issue is resolved, the car remains primarily a city vehicle, reliant on home charging. Imagine if there were only two gas stations in town and 2-3 pumps at each station didn't work. It may seem like an oversimplification, but the principle is the same.

Extra cost up front, big depreciation, & 20% increased insurance premiums for EV are big enough reasons to say 'hard-pass'. Then there's the 500lb gorilla in the roof if that's not enough.... lack of range (exacerbated by local climates can be way worse than advertised short legs). At least with say, a German ICE car you could expect that with some maintenance the car could still quasi-reasonably be on the road 20-25 years down the line. How many 2024 model EVs will be on the road 20 years from now vs 2024 ICE cars? For the average Joe-bag-of-donuts consumer the #s do not add up to choosing an EV.

The residuals on cyber trucks will probably continue to get worse. Once the deposit holders have all converted or declined an early truck, you can expect Tesla to lower the MSRP. Which will hurt residuals. And will make others hesitant to buy something that has been dropping in value. By late April, it was thought Tesla had produced 8k trucks. And TFL being 87k in line was offered a truck. Tesla makes a lot of cars, but their model s/x variants are low five figure production amounts, at a similar price point to where the truck might end up at. Compounded by it being available only in North America, production numbers might be closer to a niche vehicle. While there are 2 million deposit holders, only a fraction will be converted. And the downward price pressure will ward off some of those that aren’t turned off by its polarizing image.

What are you missing since you asked? Let's put it this way. As an automotive engineer that knows way more about EV architecture than any youtube 'influencer', you are mixing way too many metaphors if you want a cohesive message. Gasoline has 100 x's the energy density of a Lithium-Ion battery with current technology. A 1000+ lb Tesla 3 series battery does not scale to a 150 lb gas tank full of gas for any correlation in vehicle range whereby you have to wait in line 40 minutes to charge if you can even find an unoccupied charger out on the road. EV's cost more than gas car's. They depreciate more. And drum roll, they aren't more green. Tell it to 3rd world kids in slave labor in the Congo strip mining the land for cobalt in Li-Ion EV batteries with their life expectancy cut short. Electricity isn't provided by the tooth fairy. 70% of all electricity is derived by fossil fuel and coal. EV's are heavy due to afore mentioned battery to gasoline weight difference. The public is utterly clueless about EV's, climate and even green technology as they don't understand thermodynamics from the man on the moon. So, yes, the public is slow to catch on but the narrative is slowly getting out there to even Joe six pack. Is EV tech intransigent forever? No. Vinyl records, begot cassette tape players which were replaced by CD's which were replaced by digital sound stored on digital memory devices which now most people stream through a satellite. Technology moves forward and in fact exponentially based upon Moore's law. Battery tech will change, bending the arc of EV demand. But not in the imminent future. Society is in the stone age of EV technology just like gasoline cars were in the 1800's. And lastly, a quick history lesson. Electric cars came before gas cars. The first crude electric carriages were invented in the late 1820s and 1830s. Practical, commercially available electric vehicles appeared during the 1890s. On the other hand, the first gasoline-powered automobile, designed by Karl Benz, was developed in 1885 and received a patent in 1862. Therefore, electric cars predate gas cars by several decades. Why EV's gaining traction now due to the elephant in the room aka energy density deficit compared to gas car's? The advancement of Li-Ion battery technology narrowing the gap of energy storage. You are ignoring LFP battery chemistry which may mean no need to do business with Congo.
@kylem3245 ай бұрын
@@David_JourneyHe’s not ignoring. His point is that it is incremental as an advancement in battery tech. Sure, it doesn’t contain cobalt, but it doesn’t have the energy density or other properties that will optimize batteries for EVs. That will require further advancements in battery chem/tech/commercialization. Possibly that’s solid state.

In my small town 60,000 people the local GMC dealer has three Hummers sitting on the lot for over a month now, Price over 142K CDN, I think the people with money are no longer in the "more money than brains club" . The Hummer is the most inefficient EV on the market. Oh and the taillights cost over 3500.00 US each to replace. Real stupid GM.

Ioniq 5 and Ford lighting just set sales records last month. So much FUD out there. The Cybertruck is in 4th place in EV pickups and will likely be fifth after the Ram Rev comes when it comes to usability. The CT had tons of reservations before there was competition. The new shiny thing that Tesla was a few years ago is dead. The other MFGs are passing them.

Now you don't have to accept the take it or leave it Tesla attitude anymore to get an EV. BMW makes them look like Yugos

I actually like this format better than most of your interviews with other people. With just you talking, I learn more and in less time about what’s on your mind. Please do this more often. You are the expert and your opinion of what’s going on is very informative! Thank you MotoMan! I agree with you about the Lyriq. A very good first effort by Cadillac. They need to keep the momentum they achieved with the current Blackwings. The rear quarter of the Lyriq doesn’t match the attractiveness of the front 3 quarters. It is a deceptively long vehicle bigger than most mid size SUV’s. And I can’t stand the center mounted rear brake light. Every other exterior light is that distinctive vertical Cadillac look except that one. It’s a weird square that looks like someone stuck it up there as an afterthought. Gross!

Appreciate the feedback. Helps a lot. Really enjoyed putting this together and seeing the reaction is very fulfilling. Will evolve this format over time to make it a bit more impactful.

Nothing against electric vehicles. I used to frequently mistake the early model threes for a quattroporte. But after seeing the Cyber Truck in person, the pictures don't do it any justice. It's just ugly. Something tells me that most of the buyers are long-term Teslaratis and thought it would be cool. Then once they got behind the wheel, they realized it really isn't and dumped them.

Who will use a 1200V architecture? How much further can this escalate?
@MotoManTV5 ай бұрын
There are a number of benefits of upping the architecture but biggest by far to the average Joe is charging speed. 800V and above = faster recharge times = more realistic to own in the case where you live in a place that has support for it.

At which pricepoint is a Worldwide electric small SUV …every country different…in Germany it’s Hyundai and Kia Land 25-36000€ a self driven Robotaxi styled like the Cybertruck at 35000€ would be right in Germany where I come from…

A really quality editorial. Enjoyed it very much. I went ICE on my latest car due to range realities and lack of infrastructure. A weird data point here for ya but I live in Hurricane country. This latest vehicle needed to be my evacuation car ( needed 4 butt seats and tons of cargo space inside and outside the vehicle ). Nothing at the time came close to ICE except the F150 Lightning. But given its premium price and real world short range, I didn't want it to become a big paperweight because the throngs evacuating hogged up all the working chargers. Nor wanting to stop every 50 miles to charge because of range/charger availability. WIth ICE, I just throw some extra gas containers in the back or on the roof for just in case and can make it 500 miles before having to worry about a refuel. Badly written but I hope you get my point.

I think EV cars although more expensive they will save you money in 5 years ownership. They are safer, quieter, no pollution if you are next to it, or in a city, and more fun to drive. They accelrate and stop on a dime. Cyber truck can be a battery back up feeding your house for a week or more. The negativity towards electric vehicles is not good for the US. The battery technology is in its infancy. In a few years you would go 1000 miles without charging.

I think Toyota were right to stick with hybrids and PHEVs. I couldn't justify the price of an Ioniq 5, even though I really like it. We ended up with a Venza. My own car is a 2011, and I have no interest in replacing it for at least another five years. We'll see where EV tech and charging infrastructure is at that point, but I may cave and buy a Toyota Century (I really want a V12!).

I've seen a few Lyrics here, and Volvos, but I'm seeing more and more Volts and Toyota Primes charging in driveways too (don't know where all these Volts were hiding over the years!). Whenever Toyota gets the battery inventory to start making Sienna Primes with a >80 km EV range and the design language of the new Prius they can take my money! I have a Volt now with over 160k km on it and 90% battery life after seven years of daily driving it. I don't need to hoard batteries to daily drive emissions free.

I feel that vehicles that spend a majority of it's life in the city should be electric. Semis should try both ways. Some electric some hybrids. That would make the most sense. VW has even pulled back on its rush to electric. Let the delivery vehicles, the emergency vehicles, city vehicles, and "taxis". That needs to be said to the heads of these companies.

Tesla is losing money on each cyber truck. They probably are fine right now with decreased sales.. until they get the cost down and figure out another iteration on what people want.
@MotoManTV5 ай бұрын
Agreed. Tesla is fine. This episode was a commentary on the overall market and product set, not the financial health of the company. Perhaps a discussion for another day, but Tesla (Musk) was able to pull a rabbit out of a hat by getting to the tipping point of critical mass in that all his tooling is paid for at the time volume hockey sticks before the 800 pound gorillas in the space put him out of business. That's the entire game in the tech world (ask me how I know) and Must played it beautifully. Not enough folks are talking about this. Much respect.

@godofdun5 ай бұрын
First, hard disagree on the Lyriq design, love it from every angle. Second, demand is growing, every car company's ev sales are up 50-70% or more. The demand is a Tesla problem, and it took longer to get a jump start than manufacturers thought, hence the dealership stack up. This benefits BMWs strategy in the short term, but maybe not so much in the medium to long term.
