They're cheaper to buy when they're air borne. Of course, you buy as is while in the air but you can save a few bucks on fuel as air borne f150 trucks have great fuel savings while in the air.

Great video, Neil! Your advice on making a purchase is very helpful and well-reasoned. I've only had used vehicles too. I also enjoyed the storyline about your family's vehicles and the Banana's last ride, which was a great addition to your piece. When I was growing up, my family had a 1978 Chevy Suburban. It was tan-colored, had no air conditioning, and was prone to running out of gas. Despite its flaws, my parents would load all seven of us kids into the truck and take us on road trips across the Western United States.

It really just depends on how the rest of your life is set up. For me i like to keep a car no more than 5 years old, and a low mileage clean example. Worst case scenario i have to get rid of it and i at least have a nice bargaining token. Its kind of a safety net in case i need to downgrade. A big con of going strictly used and especially with beater cars is a lack of flexibility as in once you are at the bottom, you cant downgrade so if something happens to that car like a wreck youre likely to get a very small percentage of the ACV and not be able to afford another car.

Thanks for the video Neil ! I haven't bought a new vehicle since a pickup I got in '78. I've mostly had good luck buying used. We are retired now and have been making a couple trips each year of 4,200 miles between MN & CA. Our Subaru's seats weren't very comfortable on long trips so when it died (I'd missed a timing belt change) we got a 2006 Lexus LS. After 3 trips out & back in the Lexus I am still happy with it. Like most of our vehicles I expect to keep driving the Lexus until it isn't worth the cost to fix anymore. We could afford almost any car we wanted but if it ever came to a contest of pinching pennies, I'd step into the ring with you any time son ! 😂

I just did the same thing. I daily drove a 04 f250 5.4 4x4 bought it in 2016 with 140,000 just retired it running perfectly with 230,000 miles strong. It was an excellent truck. I saved and just bought a 2018 f150 5.0 4x4 with 120,000 for 17,000 and i could not be happier. Its a rocket compared to my old superduty. Blue Oval 4 life.

Nice to have you back. I caught a bit of your live stream last week but only the last few minutes. Just about when you mentioned "that's what's been going on". I just figured you took a well-deserved week off. Other than the obvious, (age) it amazes me how we seem to have similar ideas and histories. The 317 on the trailer struck me and the attachment to John Deere Garden tractors. The Ford trucks are almost exactly the models I've owned and my thinking about buying trucks (vehicles) is almost exactly the same as yours. I took my last "new to me" purchase on step further. In 2017, I purchased a 16 SCREW with a 3.5 V-6. I intentionally avoided the turbochargers mostly due to my experience with aircraft. I too just didn't want the unnecessary complexity but wanted the fuel mileage of the V6. I'm always amazed how that little engine can pump out the power at 21 MPG overall. It has never left me wishing for more. It had 23K on it when I purchased it, and now has just over 205k. It still looks and drives as good as the day I bought it. I had sold my 99 F250 crew with 7.3 (just like yours) that had 333K miles on it for about half of what the 16 cost. So, I had a very nice low milage truck for less than 10K out of pocket. It was the lower-level trim but a trip to the junk yard cured that. For another grand, I bought all the 302 trim stuff including a gauge cluster from Platinum. It's all basically plug and play with some changes to the computers which is rather easy to do. I also had a lot of help from the guys at the "F150 Ford Enthusiast" web site. I wouldn't recommend others as things can get messed up if you're not careful. At the first tire change, I upgraded to the 18" Platinum wheels and made the necessary corrections for the speedo. Also, very easy to do. In the end, I ended up with the truck I wanted but couldn't afford with no payments. I wouldn't recommend everybody jumping into this style of purchasing. But it works(ed) for me. I've from time to time thought about trading it, but I like that truck so much the thought soon passes. So, I totally agree with your point of view on these things. I just read this morning the average monthly payment on an F150 is just under $950 bucks per month. Great trucks, if you can afford them.

Regrettably, the abundance of road salt in NE Ohio ate through the annually undercoated unibody in a dozen years. My ‘96 Ford Ranger went to it’s second owner in 2023. I hope to find one more truck before I’m too old to drive... I’m running out of years. Around 4 years old with fairly high miles is a smart set of criteria. That all but guarantees they're highway miles so the wear's a lot less than the same mileage in local traffic. By contrast my dad only bought 10 year old cars on the theory that everything major that could go wrong already had by that point. That theory was proven wrong A LOT, which is why I grew up learning how to turn a wrench. Buying stuff in Europe when you're stationed there in the military and bringing it home was definitely a thing. My dad for years had a high-end turntable and reel-to-reel tape deck that he picked up while stationed in Germany, and when he was due to get out in '68 they offered him a new Jaguar if he'd re-enlist and potentially get sent to Vietnam. He turned that down in favor of going to college on the GI Bill, which worked out a lot better for my ability to exist. Loved seeing the last ride of Quack-Quack. Those 80s Mercedes diesel wagons have a bit of a following because the drivetrains are pretty near indestructible, and they're not hard to work on.

Two years ago we spent 19,000 (includes tax) on a 2004 Dodge RAM 2500. It has the 5.9 Cummins. Been real happy with it. Everything has been easy to work on it. I plan on keeping it for as long as I can. It was well taken care of and I don't have to do DEF. I would never get the ECO-boost after seeing the difficulty when the water pump goes out.

I’ve heard a ton of advice online and in real life about buying vehicles. All my adult life I’ve been purchasing used vehicles I’ve felt comfortable with after a test drive for the right price and sold them a few years later in turn only actually spending a few thousand to drive that vehicle so basically using your strategy. One time I even made 6k on an old jeep in pristine condition with one owner. I can’t bring myself to be spending 50k on a new vehicle it’s crazy. Refreshing to see someone with common sense. Vehicles can really cripple people financially without them even knowing it. Great content!

I do all the automobile buying in my family. My husband trusts me and the research I do. He likes new but we keep it until if will not run anymore. I picked out his 2011 Dodge Avenger and it now has 178,000 miles. When we buy a car we pay on it for a year and then we pay it off completely. We do that because it keeps our credit score up in the 800's. I bought my Hyundai Santa Fe SUV in 2019. It's a 2019, I wanted no more than 5,000 miles on it and the list of standard safety features are amazing. I knew that in 2020 they were going to remove many of the "standard" safety features but add them on a luxury features where you had to pay extra for them. I got everything I wanted and it was still under warranty. I knew the 5,000 miles was enough to break in the newness and it was a small town's rental car therefore I knew the maintenance history on the car itself. It's 2024 and it just flipped to24,000 miles and runs great. No issues what so ever. I always do my 3-6 month research on my cars. I paid it off after a year during Christmas. We love not having payments on anything. We're completely debt free. We're able to travel every winter to Australia. My husband is retired and I'm a disabled/retired nurse.

My first car was a 1973 Mercury Capri in 1991. I learned a lot about working on cars from that one. Partially because it broke down on me so many times. When the alternator went out I actually had to get the existing one rebuild because I couldn't find a new one anywhere (this was before the internet). Biggest lesson I learned from that car was that buying an old (not just used, but old) car could be far more trouble than it's worth - especially if you don't have a place to work on it and the knowledge to fix whatever goes wrong.

A trick I learned with black cars is get them washed and waxed good, then give them a rub down with lemon pledge. The static charge it gives keeps the dust off, keeping it looking clean longer, and the dirt that gets on it will supposedly wipe off easier. Personally I don't do black cars. I love the look, but down south, it's just too hot.

2002 Blue Silverado standard cab. Bought it in 2004 after we were told we could never have kid's. 1 yr later, pregnant with our only child. From the hospital the day she was born, elementary, middle, and high school, ole Blue has been there dropping off and picking up our daughter. Was the first vehicle she drove. My dad had a 1970 International Travelall. He bought it new. My brother & I had no clue what seatbelts were for. We were always climbing over the seats. Front to back, to way back. I closed the back door on my brothers fingers once. Dad was a cabinet maker, so he bought it because it fit a full sheet of plywood with the back seta folded down. Dad sold it in the mid 80's. By that time, it was pure rust. More holes than paint.

Good tips Neil. on buying a used car. I've had both new and used cars and trucks. You definitely can save a lot buying a clean, used vehicle. Prices for new cars today are really high. Probably due at least in part, to all the electronic systems they have. I like my 15-year-old beater car and 25-year-old project truck. I'll keep driving them until the wheels fall off! We spend so much time in our vehicles that they do seem to be a part of the family. It must have been hard for your wife to see the old Mercedes go off to its new home.

Long time viewer, first time commenter, but your video this week hit the mark for me. My parents bought a new Subaru wagon in 1998 when I was about ten years old. Grew up in that car, learned to drive in it, and ended up buying it from my dad about twelve years ago. I have used it off and on as a winter car and snowboard rig. I finally sold it this week, after a lot of options-weighing, because I just don't drive it anymore and I have a lot of other vehicles, all of which serve more of a purpose to me at this stage in life than the Subaru does. I'm sad to see it go but I think the new owner is going to appreciate it for what it is, and I can put the money into my other project trucks. But it was sort of comforting in a way to see the story of the Mercedes, and I could really relate to this one. Great video and great storytelling.

Grissom AFB is over in Peru, IN and there were a lot of guys stationed there in the 80’s and early 90’s that had spent time in Germany. When the base closed around ‘93, they moved the 122nd Fighter Wing up to Ft Wayne.

That is a really great purchase price. You nailed all the key items to be considered when looking for a new vehicle! Congrats on the purchase. 5 of the best F150 mods that I did to my 2018 F150 were (1) the easy drop lift gate strut, (2) retractable RetraxOne Aluminum Tonneau Cover, (3) added additional in bed and under dash and seat interior entry/exit lightning (4) easily build out a custom storage system for under the back seats to keep it a work truck when work is need and a family truck when family mode is needed. And fianlly (5) the drivers side back seat quick release latch sold on ebay and amazon creates a very safe/secure place for storing your "bear solution" if one is ever needed. Great video brother, I have a 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 in it with 160,000 miles on it and still going strong 💪, It was my dad's truck when he bought it new back in 2011 for his company vehicle, then when his car allowance was up and needed a new company car, instead of trading it in he decided to give the truck to me so that it stays in our family, my first truck I have (which now I use to take to car shows) is a 1996 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 210,000 miles on it and still going strong, the only things I replaced on my old truck was the starter, the rear fuel pump, and the power steering magnesium but other then that mostly was just simple maintenance, took out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since.

The part of the video about the Mercedes hit close to home... I just totalled my 2008 Chevy Cobalt. I bought it brand new. It was my first brand new car as a divorced woman who raised her kids with that car and taught them to drive in it. Ive hit at least 7-9 deer with it( I lost count). She has served me well and was starting to burn a gallon of antifreeze every 3000 miles(every oil change). I visited her the other day to make sure I cleaned her out of everything I needed, and while inside, I turned the key one last time. She started right up with no hesitation. I cried. She didn't want to give up. I thanked her for her 16 years of service, for keeping me safe when I needed it throughout our Wisconsin winters and especially when I hit the guardrail last week in some bad weather we just had but most of all....just being my favorite girl I've ever owned! Now she will be going onto do some service for our local small community volunteer fire and rescue as a prop car. I wont be there as I would not be able to watch her get cut up for training but have told her to find my dad in heaven as he was with me when I bought her. Found a 2011 Ford F150 Lariat with 203,941 miles for 9k and it's in really good condition, sunroof, sliding rear window, backup camera, navigation, auto folding mirrors, tailgate step, heated and cooled seats, auto sliding memory seat when turned on and many more really fancy features for a 2011 Lariat. Planning on purchasing it within the next week or so. God I love Ford F150s, my dream truck

I bought my 2016 f150 new. It was my first new vehicle I’ve ever owned. I know it’s over kill. But a little advice would be to change the oil when it hits 50%. I know everyone thinks I’m nuts but I’ve don’t that since I’ve owned my truck an now it’s close to 200 thousand miles on it and runs like a dream with no leaks and no problems. An I would have the transmission flushed every year. It’s around 200 or so dollars to have it done. The 10r80 has a problem with a spring in the valve body that sticks. Other then that it should last you for many many years to come. Happy driving an congratulations on the new truck.

I'm a 3.5 ecoboost guy for power and towing. the 5.0 looks the same on paper, but doesn't have the usable low end torque like the twin turbo truck . For high mile longevity I would have gone with the 5.0 as well. Now its time for a new set of Bfg at ko2! Meguiers makes a wax for black vehicles that covers up most swirls and scratches works great!

I'm interested in that wax! I kind of enjoy the labor of making the black look clean, but it may wear on me! My white 2015 had the 2.7L Ecoboost. They are great trucks and could go another 100K without any issues. We also have another G&K truck with the 3.5 EB and one more with the 5.0.

Well thought out plan! Being in Canada, my budget was to be $30K, which got me a 2016 XLT with the 302A package and the 3.5 Ecoboost. Since I wasn't going to be towing, the fuel mileage was where my choice of importance was. I've had the truck now for 4 years, and it runs as good now, as it did when I bought it, clocking in at 138,000 miles. It had an exhaust manifold on warranty early on, and I put a throttle body on myself (20 minutes) and I do 5K oil changes. I have zero complains with this truck, although I realize, like all of them, something 'could' go wrong, so it's best to have a cushion for that reality. My truck is paid for, has the 36 gallon fuel tank, so the odd long haul is an easy task. I've heard of numerous oil burning 5.0 trucks and 10 speed transmission issues on numerous Facebook and KZbin video's over the last couple of years, so I know, like all trucks, one can get a dud, or get lucky, as I feel I have. Recently heard of a 2011 ecoboost with over 500K on it, and I'm sure there are 5..0's out there with the same...so get what you can afford, and enjoy your truck, which ever your choose!

I bought a new to me truck last year and it come down to an older f150 or a 2016 tundra. I ended up going with the tundra but a mechanic friend told me either tundra or ford with that coyote v8. He said either way was a solid option.

Great story, Neil. It didn't beat my ALL-TIME favorite video of yours (Your parents' 1963 Corvette), but it came darn close. In 2007, my Dad bought a 14-year-old truck with 190,000 miles off the neighbor for $800. I still drive it, with over 250,000 miles on it today. Oh, and it's a 1993 Ford Ranger. I hope I never have to upgrade!! HA! 😁

I've only purchased one vehicle private party, and that was my first vehicle. That was a '98 2WD S10. The most recent ones I got from a dealer as certified pre-owned. They were only 3-4 years old at the time I purchased them. Main thing I like about getting a CPO from a dealer is, that I get free state inspections (not emissions). Each vehicle I've had also lasted eight years.

I noticed the red SVO Mustang in the intro as well as the 5.0 ... both great cars. For me, cars have been the cornerstones of my life. I blame it on the era of growing up in the 60's and 70's watching and wanting the Boss Mustangs and Shelby Cobras. I wouldn't change it for anything. Pick a car and there was a fond memory that accompanied it. I'm going through the same issue of needing a pickup to tow my Mustang and not wanting to pay $65k for something that will depreciate over 18% in the 1st year. Its a daunting task to find a compromise.

My grandpa had 2 c class wagons, 1 nicer than the other. The nice one had the single wiper on the windshield and 2 small wipers on the headlights. You don't forget seeing something like that at 10 years old!

Neil, you are cracking me up. I have always loved the look of your white work F-150, especially after I bought a new black Platinum 150 in May 2020. I love the black and always wanted one, but it is more work to keep clean. Sometimes I miss having a white truck. But after a wash it seems worth it. In 2024 I only have 24k miles on it. 09 Platinum still running strong. Over 200k miles and paid 10k for it. The ol' girl has been through blizzards and snow drifts 3 feet deep. All I have done is regular maintenance and new tires. Awesome truck.

This is really great info Neil, and really sound logic. I split the difference on my 2017 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. I purchased in Jan 2019 using a big down payment, but did finance part of it. Luckily I purchased this JUST before truck prices went totally crazy. The original sticker (new) was about $50K...I purchased it about 18 months later with 16K miles for about $30K. FTR, I'm a white truck guy as well, although if you are motivated to keep it clean, it's hard to beat black. Looks like a really nice F-150...enjoy!

That SVO Mustang. I had a stroked SVO 1985 and it would eat LX and GT up. I was only beaten by a Grand National. I am currently looking for a Ruby Red f150. 2.7 L or 5.0 L. 6 speed auto since the 10 has issues. People need to know that the 2.7 has an amazing block that is CGI. Same as the big boy diesel blocks. Its a VERY robust platform to build a forged unit off of. And, a new 2.7 complete long block crate engine from Ford is currently $5700. Really enjoyed your video.

Bought my first Ford F150 (used). Like you, I looked at the interior. It tells a lot about the owner's care overall. Next was were was it purchased and driven. Undercarriage tells alot. North, salt rusts. In the south, I signs of mud, was it off road for someone's fun. Carfax is a useful tool giving accident and dealership visit information. I drive my vehicle until the wheels fall off. The vehicle previous to this purchase is 24 years old and still rolling. I just tried to have some self respect and step it up. If all goes well, It will be my last truck. I like the ending of your video with the Banana car story and what a vehicle can mean. Growing up we had a chevy station wagon with the rear facing seat. We thought that was so cool.

Love my 2020 lariat, bought it new. Performance tuned, it’s a beast, over 500hp! Never had an issue! Same with my old trade in. 2014 lariat 3.5l. Love my Fords, but I’m old school with maintenance. 3,000 miles city 5,000 miles highway oil changes. Full synthetic, zero issues!! 😁😁

My last few trucks have had rebuilt titles that I have rebuilt, cheapest way to go in my opinion. My last truck I drove for 10 years and only cost me 4k ,other than normal repairs. Awesome video.

Man those S123 Mercedes Wagons are too cool! I tend to buy two generations older than the current one. But that’s me being frugal. In 2018, I bought a 2004 F150 4x4 lariat with 180k for $6500. It was a great truck, I truly loved it. I ended up putting a nice lift kit on it, wheels and tires. Never gave me any major mechanical issues, I would change the oil every 3k miles (good thing to do with most F150 V8s). Then in 2020, car prices went crazy. I still kept my truck for some years after that but then sold it in 2022 with 240k miles for $12k. I kept it in really good shape though. Now I’m in the market for a truck again, and as tempting as the 13th gens are, I think I’m going to stick to my rule and buy two generations older. I’m searching for a clean 2009- 2010 F150 king ranch or maybe even platinum. I selected those years because I want to stick with the 5.4 motor. You can find nice ones for under $10k and those two trim levels will have plenty of nice features.

I agree 100%. I'm currently driving a 2006 Ranger 4.0 Ext Cab one owner 125,000 km I bought for $5500. I've driven it three years and I'm sure I'll get my $5500 back. Frame is solid and currently has 154,000 km. My next truck will be most likely be a high mileage F150 5.0. 2018-2020 like your style. I plan to start looking this year.

I just bought a 2019 lariat with 100k kms with a 4 year full bumper to bumper warranty from a Honda dealer, someone traded it in there. Super clean one owner truck in like new spotless condition. All in it cost me $55k cdn that’s including tax, interest on the loan and the warranty. Brand new would’ve cost around $105k cdn all in. It definitely makes sense to buy used especially if you can get a warranty on it. I have pretty much a new truck for half the cost.

I was in a 98 4x4 manual ranger for 10 years it had 200k miles on it never broke down but i just finally sold her 3 days ago after buying a 2018 2.7 4x4 ecoboost XLT F150 with 80k miles for $21000!! Its the nicest truck i ever had there are deals out there to be had right now bad economy nobody is buying so car lots are desperate! cool video
