Used Motorcycle Rehab - Chain Replacement - SV650 Episode 13

I had not really meant to do this just yet, but as I was cleaning the chain I noticed that a few of the O-rings had gone missing and a little rust had started to appear on the SV650's chain links. This can become a safety issue, so I decided to err on the side of caution and go ahead and replace the chain on our project SV650 with a fresh X-ring chain and sprockets.
This operation can be intimidating for new mechanics in part because it requires some special tools, but like most other repairs on motorcycles, it's pretty straightforward once you have those special tools.
The most important tool you need for this is a chain breaker, like this one:

All the videos I've watched on this bike and rear sprocket replacement shows the opposite of how you installed it... You should watch some of those videos, you might be doing it wrong since your the only one doing it that way. Just a friendly heads up.

I don’t have an alignment tool, is it super necessary or can you eyeball it? That’s the first time I’ve heard one mentioned on chain sprocket changing videos.

You can totally do it without one, but it’s easier if you use something to align all the various parts first. I think the tool I used was a large drift pin punch, but you could use almost anything that fits in there for this purpose.

I bought a 520 120 link chain and it does not fit my 07 Suzuki sv650s from what I heard the SV uses a 110 link. Why doesn't my 120 link chain fit. If anyone can help me that wiy be great 😃👍

Are you using the stock-size sprockets?

@@MiguelGonzalez-jp9ee Maybe they sent you the wrong kit? Beyond that, I'm not sure. I've changed a few chains, and they always seem to fit without issue when I do it.

Nice video! I have one question: is it really a 32mm nut that holds the front sprocket? I think it's s 34mm one on my 2002..

34mm would be an oddball size; I don't think I even have a socket that size. I don't have access to the bike anymore to check, but if I said it's a 32mm in the video, then it was, at least in my case. That out of the way, it's totally possible that the nut on your bike has been replaced with one from some other bike that happens to fit, or an aftermarket one or something.

@@AaronAverett Thanks! I don't have that size in my set either. Yeah, seems like I have a nut from another bike. It has come loose too - I was saved by the bent washer on my 200 mile trip home.. I’ll be replacing the nut and washer asap!
