As an English learner, the more I am watching Lucy’s videos, the more I fall in love with the RP British accent instead of the American accent.
@LauraMorland4 жыл бұрын
I'm American, and I agree with you! I absolutely find Lucy's accent more delightful than mine. (And I have an "accentless American accent".) P.S. Just a little note: the "present progressive" tense is *very* hard to learn when to use it and when not to. In the above sentence, a native speaker (of either British or American English) would say: "As an English learner, the more *I watch* Lucy's videos...." (The rest of your sentence is perfect! Merry Christmas!)
@iam_robbie_lol84 жыл бұрын
@@LauraMorland Thank you so much!!! I appreciate it about people correcting the sentence I wrote! :) Well about the American accent, I think it’s easy to tell words. While the British accent, they skip “t” and sometimes it’s hard to tell what the word they are speaking. Merry Christmas to you too! :) I hope you be happy and be healthy all day long! :)
@LauraMorland4 жыл бұрын
@@iam_robbie_lol8 You're very welcome! I didn't realize that speakers of RP skip the "t" (other versions of BE [British English] do so), but I've never thought about it. On the other hand, I'm quite aware that Brits (and Australians and New Zealanders) omit the *"r"* at the end of words... it's *the* distinguishing feature between British and American (or Canadian) English.
@iam_robbie_lol84 жыл бұрын
@@LauraMorland Oh! I didn’t know they omit “r”. 😅 It gives me another reason why when I started to learn English, I prefer to choose American accent materials. 😅 I have learned English for over 16 years, from primary school to now, because English is one of the main subjects (The rest of them are Chinese and Math). I am fluent in speaking and texting to my best American and British friends. But when comes to listening, like watching videos without subtitles, it’s quite difficult for me. 😅 And my English grammar is really poor. So I am very grateful that people can find my grammatical errors. :)
@LauraMorland4 жыл бұрын
@@iam_robbie_lol8 I highly doubt that your "English grammar is poor" because your paragraph above is practically *perfect* !!! I had to read it twice before I found even the *tiniest* mistake. If you're interested to know what it is: we would write: "... when I started to learn English, I *preferred* [because you're describing a event in the past] to choose..." But it's an extremely small point. If we were talking in person (or over Zoom), I wouldn't even have noticed it. Congratulations! Where are you from; do you mind letting me know? You will go far with your English skills, I'm sure!

No. 2, Running is also a past state} Would you mind explaining the ans.? 5. b)✔ 6. c)✔ (As it is a past habit, 'would' is appropriate😊) 7. a)✔ 8. c)✔ ( 'use' as it is an interrogative sentence) 9. b)✔ ( 'use' as it's a negative sentence) 10. c)✔ ("getting used to" as "Mr. I" is becoming more revision oriented) My Score: 8 out of 10.

No.2 b) is wrong because it is in present tense (use to read). It must be in past tense c) used to read No.4 b) is wrong because past tense is used twice (didn't used to run - didn't is in past tense and used to is in past tense). Past tense can be used only once a) didn't use to run (didn't is in past tense so ''use to'' must not be)

I have a question about "would." Sometimes it's used like...eg ."he/they/she would argue that this is not true " or for talking about a future which has happened..e.g. " he would go on to become the prime minister " What is this use of " would " called? It's so confusing. Kindly elaborate.
@teachioworld5404 жыл бұрын
Would is used in five different ways...I guess... 1. would for unreal situations (Imagined, dreamed of situations) Example: - He would go on to become the prime minister - She would like to become a professional cheerleader 2. would as a past tense Example: - Keanu said that he *would* be late for the party 3. would in conditional sentences. (This basically means hypothetical situations, that is, unreal situations just like the first one) Example: - If I win the lottery, I would travel around the world 4. would not (wouldn't) as to "refuse" This is used when someone refuses something Example: - I asked her if I could borrow her car, but she wouldn't lend it to me. 5. would for past actions This is used when you are talking about past actions or actions that are repeated in the past Example: - When I was young, I would run around the fields every day. - In the summer, we would always go camping. Hope this helped...>_< Good luck learning!
@lisanarramore2224 жыл бұрын
@@teachioworld540 I hope you don't mind me commenting on your response :) 1. "He would go on to become the prime minister." This isn't an unreal / imagined situation. It means that the person literally becomes the prime minister at a later date. It's a tricky one for English learners! The speaker is referring to a past event, but something that happened at a later date than the actual story he's telling. 3. You can say "If I WON the lottery, I WOULD travel around the world," or you can say "If I WIN the lottery, I WILL travel around the world." The tense must stay the same throughout the sentence. There's a difference in the way we use these two, though. If you start with "If I won..." you're implying that you don't actually believe you will win. You might not even have a ticket! But if you start with "If I win..." it means you think you do have a chance of winning. Going back to TA's first question: "She would argue that this is not true." This use of 'would' is a bit different: Pretend 'she' is named Jude. You're saying IF JUDE WERE HERE, she would disagree. But Jude is not here. It's an example of subjunctive mood, which we use for hypothetical situations. Hope that's helpful. x
