As someone who's owned an R36 wagon and a Crown Athlete V wagon (and MANY other fast wagons/interesting daily drivers) I always find myself wanting another R36... Everything about them is just fantastic. If you get one with lower mileage and full service history from an owner who's looked after it, it's hard to beat! If you know people who work on these and can supply parts for cheap, they're no worse to maintain than most modern Japanese brands. Plus you have something cool ;)

Thanks for the shoutout :) Minor correction: The R36 in Aus standard 'VW Sound System' has a 250w amp and 8 speakers. The Dynaudio option has a 10 speaker 600w Lear amp. Otherwise thanks for the great video! The steering map can be changed via software. As the ZF Gen3 rack is shared amongst a whole heap of cars the character of the steering is controlled by a map in the eeprom. Lots of people prefer the feel of the PQ RS3 map, or for a really direct feel the R32 map. Personally I think you might have leaned a little too heavily into the potential issues but it's fair to let people know what could be problematic. The advantage is that the potential weak points are all well known by this stage and easily identified. And given the PQ46 platform was about 10 years ahead of it's time in terms of electronics it's a really retrofittable car - adaptive cruise control, lane assist, park assist, side assist, OEM Android Auto and Apple Carplay can all be installed (which I've done).

600 watt is probably peak spread over 10 speakers. Which is more like 30 watt rms per channel and into 4 ohm. Or another way of looking at it is 15 watt rms into 8 ohm. So not all that powerful.

As a German myself I really appreciate the bit of classic German music, felt almost like home. Not only the safety part but also the superb accent free announcement for the subchapters. On point. Other than that, as per usual a spot on review of an exquisite automobile. Gotta say though, Jim's insight on the signature VW diesel stink hit very hard on a very relatable level, iykyk

I own a 2010 r36 sedan from new, it has been a dream, only issue on this list inexperienced was a power window issue that was easily fixed. DSG is slow at going from park to drive and reverse to drive but shifts are really quick when driving. Not sure the other cars suggested at the end of the video even come close to a well maintained r36. Great video even though I don’t totally agree. Love that blue, mine is black.

I've got a black 08 saloon as well, here in uk. Been very reliable. Rust is the biggest problem here. Had the car nearly 10 years now and hope to keep it as long as possible. The mechanic interviewed doesn't appear to be talking about this model. There is no key to turn and it uses very little oil, not being a turbo. I have had the parking brake issue...give me an old fashioned handbrake any day. The engine has been faultless. They are reliable units and can run to big miles. I found the video slightly annoying, to be honest.

I drive an R36 as my daily family wagon. Absolutely love driving to work, to the shops, road trips, it's just beautiful to drive. When you spend a good chunk of your life in a car, why not enjoy it! Also been pretty lucky with only minor stuff needing maintenance. I've decided I'll stop modifying it and spend money where it is needed so if a bigger cost item comes up I don't feel the pain as much. Also gotta say the rear is one of the best looking rears on the road.

I absolutely LOVED owning mine. Exact same colour & trim shown here too. Unfortunately for me, the DSG was the biggest gremlin I had. Owned the 2010 R36 for 8 years and it was brilliant! The sound it makes when you get up the rev range was addictive, but the fuel bills increased dramatically 😂 Loved the car, but after a pothole/rock hit (it was dark) that destroyed two wheels, it was quite the same and had an annoying whirring sound from somewhere on the left. Current car gets better fuel economy with more performance even with the roof racks loaded with bicycles!

A few of my own words, Given the age of this thing, with a refreshed head unit it’s still going strong against new cars. This generation of german cars, as long as well looked after, they last. BUT, I work on my own cars, change fluids every 6months, hence it’s not too expensive for me in terms of maintenance. However, when certain things age and start to go wrong, like timing chains etc, be prepared to spend a few grand, but after that that’s another 10 years. So before you decide to go ahead, ask yourself whether you like it enough. Drawback, though it is the last swan song of the VR6s, takes only 98, Avg 22L/100km on 5w40. around 20L/100km on 5w30, but makes same figures as new Golf R with a 2.0. If you’re looking for performance look elsewhere.

I own a Black R36 Wagon with sunroof and premium sound. It's been an absolutely pleasure until the fuel control module failed and it took 7 months for someone to fix it. A water leak then happened as sruck on side of road which caused all sorts of mold issues. All have now been fixed for less than $500 and it's running like new at 230K (hope I don't jinx myself......haha) I'm keeping it as I love it and a great video. Only disagreement I have is with your steering complaint - I've owned HSV, XR Falcons etc and the steering feel in mine is levels above them and extremely direct with feedback so maybe an issue with the car you reviewed) Anyway great and fair review and no, there is no way in hell I'm selling or buying one the options you suggest are comparable. I had a black sedan R36 from 2011 for 6 years. Best car I ever owned. Ran like a clock, mechatronics unit changed under warranty but that’s it. Handling was amazing on country roads, the more you pushed it, the more it gripped. I bought a Liberty after the R36 and it was no comparison. Drivers seat bolster wore out so I had to repair it. In hindsight I’d recommend changing the whole seat squab via VW spare parts cause the foam just wears out especially if you are not a lightweight. We will never see a car like this again in the era of smaller engines with turbos and electric motors. If I had one with low mileage I’d keep it under a blanket in the garage, surely a cult classic of the future.

I purchased a Blue Sedan Passat R36 from 2008 two years ago from someone who I certainly trust. It has done 192.000 kilometers and engine uses no oil or hardly any oil. I spent a few grant to get rid of some imperfections (looks like new inside and out) and fortunately it has been a reliable car from A to B. Sure hope it stays that way because I think it is extremely complicated under the bonnet. Engine is quite agressive with some rumbling sound and loves 98 petrol. Acceleration can be very fast too. However I hardly go any faster than say 90 to 95 km's an hour also on the freeway. More comfortable and a lot less wear and tear.

I personally was considering one of these, but went a Liberty GT-B instead and I don't regret it. It's not perfect, but nearly everything that's been an issue has been turned into an excuse to upgrade and make it better than before. Parts are relatively cheap and fairly easy to obtain too.

Thanks for the review, I love my 2010 R36 wagon 😊 With regards to the transmission, the shifts in mine are F1 fast, especially in sport mode using the paddles. Old mate's may need a service. And mine has done almost 230k km's now. And if you love the sound the car makes under acceleration, you should hear mine with bi-modal mufflers. The wail and DSG farts are awesome!! The only major-ish repair I have had to deal with was for the water pump that was sometimes leaking coolant past the shaft seal. And like Jack Black says.......'you're not hard core, unless you live hard core'.

My electronic handbrake motor failed, DPF completely blocked, EGR valve replaced, water pump failed (looked like a kid had made it out of meccano), fuel pump failed, electric window buttons failed, the central rear armrest broke, the wheel arches rusted severely at 10 years old & so got rid of it. Ended up selling for half of what I payed for it just to not have to deal with it. That being said though they are a very nice car to drive and are pretty luxurious even compared to most cars these days but I wouldn't touch one unless you are a skilled/rich enough to keep it running.

The oil pump bolt issue was pretty exclusive to the 3.2 VR6 I haven't seen it happen in the 3.6 BWS motor. The timing chain issue is not the chains but the plastic guides and can happen at any mileage depending on service intervals/driving characteristics. Lack of maintenance is what kills these cars. They need frequent, high quality pampering. My "09 R36 Wagon is at 260,000ks, has had all the maintenance done, runs like a Swiss watch.

I looked at these about 10 years ago... and also the R36 engined Skoda Superb.... but I ended up going for an unused (400km) pre-registered demo car at the same price, but that got me a Audi A6 Avant TFSI as the 2012 model had a much more modern look, especially the interior (Blueooth and online connectivity, 12 speakers + sub as standard, plus a few demo extras: Google maps on the "MMI Touch", LED matrix headlights, etc).... plus the earlier TFSI engines were actually the 3.0 supercharged that was good for 300bhp out the box, so you get a responsive V6 that remaps to over 400bhp without any other mods - no extra torque, but now it holds the 400Nm+ out to 7000rpm... plus the A6 quattro is the proper Torsen one with 60:40 rear torque bias! Downside was the DSG gearbox mechatronics failed after 3 yrs (Audi were VERY good to me on the gearbox rebuild - 100% covered!!) and the fuel economy is even more of a mixed story: better than the R36 when granny-shifting / driven like a diesel, but a LOT lower if you're seeing 7000rpm on a regular basis.

I love fast wagons, however as a mechanic I have a big caveat on heavily modified vehicles. If it’s been slammed to the weeds or has been ridiculously over tuned I stay away. Some minor modifications are fine a small remap for few extra KWs or a trick suspension mode of about 15-20mm lower great. Everything else you can just forget it. Again the key here is service history if it has been regularly checked over that will always be worth a few extra $$.

I've just bought a v clean manual B6 170 bhp tdi with 185,000 kilometers on the clock. I spent a good bit of money fitting a new cambelt and water pump along with a comprehensive service. I try to use it only for journeys of *AT LEAST* 50-60 kilometers as much as possible as this reduces the number of cold starts which is what can increase the likelihood of potential problems with the engine and its various ancillary components (EGR, DPF etc). I always leave it parked in 1st or reverse gear rather than with the electric parking brake. I reckon regular daily short commutes do these cars *no favours* whatsoever. If you buy a high performance variant, expect high performance costs.

I purchased a new 3.2lt Passat wagon in 2006, same colour blue as the vehicle reviewed. After my experience with VW AU, particularly the 1st 4 years, I'd never touch a VW group car again in my life. Biggest problem was with the traction control system deciding wheels are spinning (from a gentle take-off, NOT!) and stranding my wife and children in the middle of an intersection by retarding the engine, multiple times per month. After countless visits to the dealer and phone calls/email exchanges with VW Australia, nothing was done under warranty. It was under extended warranty (4th year) that the dealer replaced the ABS computer after me requesting they do so from day 1. This was just 1 example of the problems (a serious one) I had. After I started taking the car to my trusted mechanic in years 5-10, the car somewhat became reliable. Basically, in the 1st 5 years of it's life it spent 2-3 weeks per year at the dealer workshop for issues unrelated to normal servicing. It had this knack of breaking down just as we were about to go on a planned family holiday. Basically, I could not trust it. We nicknamed it the "Blue Lemon", a well earned and deserved name. Also, VW AU has no clue about after sales support for their products, nor do they care. We sold the car just before 10 years of age with 162,000 Km on the clock to a young couple for 10% of the purchase price. We ran into them 9-12 months later only to hear the the engine died due to the problem described in this report. Obviously I did not know about it at the time so the option of undertaking a costly preventative maintenance was not considered.

i've got a CC with the 220kw vr6 and as far as im concerned, make sure you get one that has sorted timing chains/guides. you're in for a bad time if you get one that still has the original gear, especially with how old these cars are now. also putting aftermarket headunits in these cars is a pretty complex undertaking. unless you're happy with not having stuff like your reverse camera or GPS display in the center cluster screen, it requires a fair bit of research and money to get something that completely integrates into all the systems. seems like this owner has got a Vhedia or similar style unit which i also took delivery of a little while ago. I havent installed mine yet but their main claim to fame with their units is seamless integration.

If you get an 09-10 model they have uprated timing chain tensioners that seem to give a lot fewer hassles. The older 3.6's do tend to have more issues, though the 3.2 versions seem less prone to that and can be extremely reliable, 400,000K being not unknown on an original engine.

Always awesome reviews! Thanks. I've owned a Passat 118TSI 2014 ( the boring looking one ) since it was new. Love the ride and DSG smoothness and acceleration. Spacious car. However, I've replaced the machatronic once ( cost me $ 2200) and replaced the leaky original pladtic water pump with an aluminium case waterpump ( cost $1900). Generally, total repais cost of about $4000 in 10 year doesn't look too bad to me. It's my daily drive car. After 10 years of ownership, it is still running beautifully. Nice quite smooth ride. There are not many signs of wear.. Generally very happy with it

Wanted one of these but my experience with a jumped Audi 3.2fsi timing chain made me say ‘no more VW petrols’. So I got the diesel version of this instead. So far I’ve had the ignition lock fault, key problem, ac compressor issue and blocked sunroof drains. Some expensive fixes but was a cheap car to buy and refuel. Wish it had the power and look of the R36!

Dad had one when i was in my early 20s, great real world performance car. Not too much size and power like many of today's cars. A sheep in wolf's clothing as he used to say. It looks fantastic, great proportions and the 19" wheels fill the arches. Great stance. Imo ideally needs a few tweaks to really get the most from it (tune, exhaust, suspension, tyres). No complaints really about the DSG, although my cars are all manual. Does sound nice with flat upshifts or on high rev downchanges and fast enough changes. Have some fond memories of that car, roundabout 4 wheel drifts, blasting up mountain roads or exhaust echoing down city lane ways (I even got pulled over for enthusiastic acceleration off the line, no warning or ticket! I put it down to the classy car) Everything adam says is spot on, especially the disconnected steering feel. Linear engine is a gem in today's small capacity turbo world

Brother has a 2010 r36 and we love it. A few minor issues but other than that it's holding up great, other than a few lost LEDs and a leaky sunroof The 1.8t 2014 passat I had was a complete lemon. So much so that at after 5 years i traded it in for a mazda. Constant issues with the bi xenon lights and ecu that never actually were resolved. 2 water pumps in that time and as I traded it in it was starting to leak oil. Always serviced on time at the dealership but they were the worst least helpful techs I ever had to deal with. Vw after sales service has to be some of the worst in the country in my experience

Viewer from NZ. Headliner sagged and side bolsters on seats failed but a reputable upholsterer remedied this for around NZ$6-700. More than half of that was the headliner. The bigger issue with the seats is the pneumatic bolster adjustment bladders eventually leak and so no longer work. Even without these the seats are still some of the best produciton car seats ever.

Eccentric yes, but a lot less powerful than the R36, and a remarkably poor reliability record. That's quite likely because they only ever produced one model using the W8 and so never got the chance to sort out the most obvious issues in an updated model. The VR6 is probably an overall better choice though, far less complex and yet smooth and powerful. W8 is perhaps best thought of as a testbed for the W16 Veyron engine.

Although the United States never got the R36 it did get the sedan and wagon with the option of the 3.6L VR6. I purchased a wagon version painted Tornado red with a black leather interior. It was definitely a love/hate relationship! I loved it when it ran properly and everything worked but those times were rather rare especially as it got older. The engine was faultless over the 175K miles I owned it but practically everything else malfunctioned at least once. Even the radio has issues! I have owned twenty vehicles and that one was the only one with a faulty factory radio. Some components like the power windows failed multiple times. My ownership experience pretty much put me off buying another VW product.

I currently daily a 2.0t DSG Wagon, and I've been lucky enough to buy it second hand where the PO did so much preventative maintenence. I've kept with that trend, and it's been expensive, but it's also the best car I've ever owned. I'm upgrading mine slowly with minor OEM upgrades, and I've done the Unitronic Stage 1 engine and DSG tune, which has really woken up the car for highway driving. I plan on keeping mine unless some catastrophic event happens.

Regarding reliability and the age old Japanese vs Euro debate. I think something highlighted in Jim's comments is the CEL lights being on, but the car working fine for years. I am absolutely certain that the biggest difference between Euro and Japanese cars is the 'threshold' that the ECU reports a problem and causes a CEL. I strongly believe that Euro cars report when something is just a tiny bit off, where Japanese cars won't report until something is seriously off. I've seen plenty of Japanese cars that have major, major problems and not a single warning. Euro cars throw a code if they sneeze. This creates an illusion of reliable and non-reliable. Also people go into panic mode as soon as a CEL comes on.
