I wonder why they burble/rasp like that? V6's (Nissan VQ) also share it too but less intense, but an Inline 6 (2JZ or B58) sounds very smooth. I assume its because V engines have an odd number of 3 cylinders per bank??

We've had two cars with vr6 engines..a golf r32 for about 12 years...no engine issues and a passat r36 which I've had about 6 years and no engine issues. They both averaged about 28 mpg and sounded great. I'm hoping to keep the passat for another 5 years, mainly because of that engine, i think. Favourite engines of all cars I've had.

Had a 1993 mk3 VW golf VR6 2.8 174hp - great engine, fast for it’s time, had great engine sound and was quite fuel efficient when driven reasonably. A friend of mine had a 2000 VW Passat vr5 2.3L 150hp - that was crap - neither fast nor fuel efficient. Great video as always!

I own a seat toledo with a 20v vr5 and i can tell you the 20v engine is awesome it has 170hp and needs 8-10 liters per 100kilometers depending on your driving style the car always surprises me when i can keep up with newer sportier cars on the autobahn. I think the combination of the "weak" 10v and the heavier chassis of the passat just made it a "bad combination"

@@satsumagt5284 I did call it that sometimes to try to help explain. Though Lancia merely referred to their engine as a "narrow angle V4" at the time. The VR name hadn't been invented until Volkswagen introduced the VR6.
@stephanuhu963
@stephanuhu963 3 жыл бұрын
@@krudmuphinstudioz The term VR is a VW invention, and did not exist in the earlier Lancia iteration of these engines. I believe that is because VW wanted to emphasize the 6-cylinders-in-4-cylinder space in their marketing, by calling the concept literally "V-Inline", which translated phonetically to {Fau-Reihe} and alphabetically to "VR". The letter V is called "Fau" in the German alphabet, just as Y is called "Ipsilon"! Eg. {Fau-Wee} when they speak of {Vee-Double-U}

Been driving Volkwagen since 1989 and the R32 has become my favorite. My first was a mk1 GTI and I can still remember that car surprised a LOT of people off the line, or rolling down the highway. My Mk5 R32 gets much more of the same reaction. The VR6 engine paired up with a DSG is just an absolute kick in the pants to drive. It's insane what output you can get from a VR6 with any level of modification, and yes, the wookie sound is quite iconic.

The staggered inline, single cylinder head design is probably my favorite. How cool would a 4.0L VR8 making 450HP be? Bet it would sound amazing, and the maintenance is so easy to do on these because it's like working on an inline engine.
@turtlezed
@turtlezed 9 ай бұрын
Staggered and in line? It can’t be both…. It’s on a single crank but two separate planes the pistons are operating in so in my eyes, this is a ‘V’ design but the angle is so tight it can have 1 cylinder head , a normal inline 6 cylinder is waaay smoother and sounds like a normal 6 but this does not, it sounds ‘lumpy’ like a V6….🤷‍♂️

The ol 12v vr6 isnt the greatest breather, but she sounds good. It was made so it'll fit in place of a 4 cylinder, not necessarily performance. A turbo will fix that, as going NA is very expensive. The sound they make is quite intoxicating. There's a guy on here with one in a mk3 that runs 11s no turbo, he's proven everyone wrong that you can't go fast with an NA, but it's been developed to what it is over many years.

BMC's Duncan Stuart developed an experimental Lancia-inspired 18-degree SOHC V4/V6 engine family that used a toothed rubber belt to drive a centrally-mounted camshaft, being conceived at the behest of Leonard Lord from about 56-58 (who wanted to replace BMC's various engines with a common engine family - the later E-Series being conceived for a similar unrealistic purpose) before being cancelled in late-62. The V4 was tested in a 1.1 and 2.0 forms (in the likes of the MGA, first MGB prototype and possibly even one A40 Farina in 1.1 form), though the V6 remained a paper project. The BMC 18-degree V4/V6 project however was dropped because of its alleged bulk/weight, inability to be mounted transversely in the upcoming FWD 1100/1300 and 1800/2200 (only longitudinally Triumph 1300 style - unlike the VW VR6), reputedly sounding rough by MG engineer Syd Enever who disliked the uneven exhaust note of the V4 configuration, being too costly to develop (and the cost of requiring a thorough refit of the Longbridge engine production facilities) as well as once the A-Series engine proved capable of being enlarged from 948cc to 1098cc (later 1275cc).

yeah I was also surprised, but it also makes sense. More cilinders means more torque at lower rpm, and with the low combustion given by Lpg you need as many as possible. Also fits into a small space

@@clevernduruza8624 That's not wrong. They are 2 VR-Banks on one Crankshaft. To Eddie: It triggers me everytime that these engines were called "W". Because a "W" will have 3 Zylinder-Banks. The VW-engines are more "doubble-V's or doubble-VR's". In my opinion. 😀

I have a 2019 SEL Premium and aside from wishing it had a Turbo option the way the Audi does, I actually like it just as well if not more than the Q7. I rented a 2019 Q7 for a week when it was new so I had experience with both. Seeing other Q7s on the road the Atlas just has a better overall look. It looks more aggressive and bigger (the Q7 seems to slouch [i.e. it sits lower) compared to the Atlas).

So miss my excellent car that even made it into the Euro tuner magazine in the late 90s. I had MK4 Rave Green 2.8L VR6 excellent, manual shift, lowered,heated and leather seats,new headers,cold air intake, full exhaust, 18in BBS rims, carbon fiber hood glass HID headlights leather interior much more more just magazine talk lol. Euro tuned up batch's, shaded black back taillights. My challenge is only the nice R32 3.2L VR's in races. ✌️

When I bought my Corrado a couple decades ago I knew from its earliest G60 problems that it was destined for the swap I still have my 92 but it's a 97 GTI under it all Maybe when I retire I'll do the turbo Quattro conversion but it'll always be a sweet sounding VR6

I owned two of these, a '92 Corrado SLC with 2.8 liters and 178/190* hp [190 after my mods], and a '97 Jetta GLX with 174 hp and a fucking slush pump automatic transmission. -These engines are HOOLIGANS! Their sound and they way they develop power entice you to drive them hard. Sure, the four cylinder turbos can be way faster, but the VR6 is one that seems to say to you: "Come on baby...What about another 1000 rpm; Don't you want to hear my sweet voice? Let's EAT THAT FUCKING HONDA~!" Volkswagen's best engine EVER. When this came out, I thought there would be about 5 Japanese copies within 10 years, but only one very small motorcycle company has tried this design, which is puzzling since it is ~~PERFECT~~ for a full dress cruiser bike. Great video as always!
