I noticed that Isabella I of Castile's mother, Isabella of Portugal, had a sister, Beatrice, whose son became Manuel I of Portugal. Isabella and her sister had the same parents, and the maternal line was traceable on Wikipedia for one or two generations earlier. Shouldn't they be counted, and one of those earlier matrilineal line be the founder? Also, this chart seems to be missing the connections, even through the male lines, to earlier matrilineal dynasties. I recall a few more listed in the first video. Wondered why those aren't here. Still, great work! This is fascinating.

Elizabeth IIs mother was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon the daughter of an Earl. QE IIs maternal grandmother was minor nobility and her maternal great grandmother was born a commoner. So if you go back a few generations through the female line Elizabeth IIs ancestry is not at all distinguished.

I found yet another huge matrilineal dynasty, founded by Catherine Opalinska, who was queen consort of Poland as a wife of king Stanisław Leszczyński, and who is by female line only and ancestor of another 11 queens (including Isabella II of Spain) and two empresses, as well as 6 kings and one emperor. This dynasty would also include current count of Paris, wife of Jean-Christoph Bonaparte and few other important aristocrats. I think it's worth adding to the chart in the future.

Funnily enough matrilines are both the most and least accurate. Most accurate because, well, if a noblewoman is getting it on with the stableboy, the kid’s still gonna be hers no matter what. You can basically guarantee maternity bar a baby swap situation, but on the other hand a lot of older sources simply don’t mention the female members of a dynasty so sometimes it’s impossible to trace matrilines because we simply don’t know who the mother was as her name wasn’t important to history

I found another interesting matrilineal dynasty, starting with a person called Sophia Phokaina. This house includes: 3 Empress-Consorts (One of which was also co-monarch) One Queen Regent 5 Queen-Consorts 1 Saint 1 Emperor 9 kings And held 6 different crowns over a span of 300 years. The House starts with Sophia Phokaina, daughter of a Byzantine General. She married into Byzantine Royalty and gave birth to Theophanu, who married the Holy Roman Emperor Otto II, and became co-monarch herself. Their son Otto became Emperor as well. Their daughter Matilda was the mother of Richeza of Lotharingia, who married the Polish king Mieszko II. Their son was Casimir I the Restorer, who was a king of Poland. Casimirs sisters where ancestors of two main lines of the house: The Anglo-Scotish line of Agatha, and the Polish-Hungarian line of Richeza of Poland. Agatha married Edward the Exile, son of the deposed English king Edmud Ironside. Their son Edgar Ætheling was elected King by the Witenagemot after Harold Godwindsons defeat at the Battle of Hastings on the hands of William the conqueror but was defeated himself soon after. His sister Margaret married king Malcolm III of Scotland. She was made a saint after her death. 3 of Margarets sons became kings of Scotland: Edgar, Alexander I and David I. Some Sources also claim that Edmund was co-monarch together with his uncle Donald III. Margarets daughter Mary is a female line ancestor of Matilda of Brabant, wife to Emperor Otto IV. (there’s a connection to the House of Elanor) Her nephew William II. of Holland was also a matrilineal descendant of Mary of Scotland. He was proclaimed King of the Romans/king of Germany during the interregnum period, but never crowned emperor. Margarets other daughter Matilda married Henry I of England and became Queen-Regent. Her daughter, also called Matilda married Emperor Henry V. She was still called Empress Matilda, even after the Emperors death and her marriage to Count Geoffrey Plantagenet. Matilda was proclaimed heir to the English crown by her father. But when he died, her cousin Stephen de Blois claimed the throne and started a civil war. During the war Matilda was the first woman to control all of England, be it only for a few months. She lost the war in the end, but after Stephens death the line of succession continued through her son Henry II. Now back to Richeza of Lotharingia. Her daughter, who was also called Richeza, married king Béla I of Hungary. Among their children are king Géza I of Hungary, king Ladislaus I of Hungary and Helen, Queen-Consort to king Demetrius Zvonimr of Craotia.

Fun fact: if you look back to Maria Louise’s parents, they had another daughter, Countess Caroline Felizitas of Leiningen-Dagsburg, who is the direct matrilineal ancestor of Queen Mary of Teck (grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II). Additionally, Maria Theresa’s maternal grandmother was the matrilineal ancestor of Peter II of Russia and at least three other queens/empresses. In the same house, you missed the matrilineal descendants of Maria Amalia, duchess of Parma, Maria Theresa’s daughter. Through her, there are at least three kings, as well as a Queen of Spain. In the house of Barbara, you also missed Charlotte, the last queen-consort of Württemberg. Edit: Recently looking into the Romanian royal family, I noticed that another member of the House of Maria Louisa is Elisabeth, Queen-Consort of Romania as the wife of Ferdinand I (she was the matrilineal descendant through Maria Louisa’s daughter, Princess Friederike. Additionally, if you count Anne as the queen of Romania, which was her title even though she married the king after he was deposed, then she is also an important member of the house of Maria Theresa through her daughter Maria Carolina.

I feel like you would belong to the more powerful family. So if your father was a Tudor and your mother a Seymour you are a Tudor ( such as in my case). If two houses are of equal power and control different kingdoms then you would be from the house previously ruling the kingdom when you are there. So James VI and I would be the Tudor King of England and the Stuart King of Scotland

@Greg Gaming Unfortunately, they were in exile after the Second World War and could not return because they would have been killed by the communist regime, the only one who miraculously remained in the country during the communist regime was Prince George, King Alexander's brother. Many of them have actually returned to Serbia and live in Serbia and they do not speak the language so badly considering they have spent their whole lives abroad, they also helping Serbia as you said behind the scene economicaly, politicaly. ect..

Regarding the chart, there's one thing I'd like to point out: I think the house of Maria Theresa should actually begin with Maria Theresa's mother, Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Not only she was Holy Roman Empress herself, but she played a non-insignificant role in the political shenanigans of her time, much to her husband's chagrin who wanted to keep her out of actual power.

There are likely a lot more matrilineal descendants who never married an important person, and thus were not tracked further down. I suspect one of them is the actual most senior member of the dynasty. That's why Matt always had to add "noble" to qualify the result.

Yes, and anyone who's done any genealogy on their own matrilineal lines knows how hard it is to track these lines among peasantry. Quite often you find that a woman just appeared from somewhere to the church records with no way of tracing her roots up the tree.

Isabella wasn't queen consort of Castille. She was queen, since she had the right. She married Fernando, King of Aragon. Fermando was never king of Castille, nor Isabella queen of Aragon. Despite their marriage, the kingdoms remained separated.

This is so cool, thanks for these fascinating videos and posters! I was inspired by your first video on Garsenda and have been searching for royal matrilines myself! I have been waiting for this video to compare what we’ve found. I think I found 3 additional consorts from the house of Maria Louise - Olga Nicolaevna, Queen of Wurttemberg, Caroline Augusta, Empress of Austria, and Mary of Teck, Queen of the U.K. (she is a matrilineal descendant of Mary Louise’s sister). I also researched Maria Theresa’s line - In addition to Maria Theresa’s mother, an empress consort, I think I found an additional 5 queen consorts, 13 kings, 2 emperors, and 2 tsars (one Bulgarian, one Russian) descended matrilineally from Maria Theresa and her sisters (I have not double checked those numbers). There is also one more reigning female monarch in the line - Maria II of Portugal (daughter of Leopoldina on your tree), whose consort Prince Auguste just so happened to be from the house of Maria Louise!

I've always thought it was absolutely ridiculous to count the father's line as the "real" line or "the one that counts" because as history has well proven, any male can sire a child, but only 1 woman can give birth to that child. By birth and by logic, the mother's line is the only line that can be truly guaranteed. (we're talking history, when modern DNA analysis and fertility assistance was not a concept yet) Also, the name of Joanna of Castile was pronounced "Hwuana" not "Joe-anna"

I would love if there is one dynasty in history where there were both kings and queens and was not specifically a patrilineal or matrilineal line. As both Men and Women are worthy of being rulers. So glad the channel checked into the female lines only branch. So interesting as few famous houses we heard are related to the line. Male lines also is interesting but there should be females also in a rulership of any land. I avoided 'Kingdom' or 'Queendom'. I also wish a dynasty has a name of their house from where they are as that is where they are from and well though it is the culture of many western nations that it should be father's sie i want it to be something interesting like how the House of Windsor came to be.

I am not a specialist in royal families but, I know this, Isabella I of Castile was queen regnant of Castile and queen consort of Aragon. Her husband was king of Aragon and consort of Castile. Very informative and interesting video anyway. Thank you for your good and thorough work.

There's many more "dynasties" like that. For example by the female only line Catherine of Guise is an ancestor of 6 queens, 4 empresses, god knows how many duchesses and princesses, as well as one emperor, 7 kings and many electors, dukes and princes. Maybe it'll make your next chart on that topic

Truly fascinating and makes me think about my own heritage as a woman. Since most of us inherit our fathers' surnames, our matrilineal lines get lost in time. My dad has done a lot of genealogy research on his side of the family, going back to the 18th Century, but this really makes me want to trace my matrilineal line as far back as possible. That'll be a fun project!

If I am not mistaken (I am an Austrian), Emperess Maria Theresia was also Emperess Regnant of the whole Empire of Austria (which was part of the HRE at that time), not just Queen Regnant of Bohemia (which was a part of Austria until 1918). But it is correct that her husband was elected the Holy Roman Emperor instead of her because they didn't want a woman hold that title. At least we were told in School that Maria Theresia was the Emperess (Regnant) of Austria. The ruling dynasty of Austria is also traditionally called Habsburg-Lorraine after her, and in fact that is still the official name of the current living descendants of the "House of Habsburg".

Excellent video, I must say I do enjoy all of them. They are very instructive and confirm a lot of the doubts I have had through the years. I just want to suggest more infomation on the house of Isabella. I am sure you know she is supposed to be a member of either the house of Lancaster or the house of York. This is one of the reasons Henry the VIII didn't kill Katherine of Aragon. There are very interesting series about all of this. There is one called The Spanish Princess which is about the life of Katherine. Also, in Spanish there is a series called Isabella where they go in depth about Isabella of Castille and Fernando de Aragon's even including Colombous and the details of the legitmacy of the throne are confusing. For example, the crown of Castille belonged by right to La Beltraneja. A figure that dissapeared apparently with permission from the pope at the time through a document called in Spanish Bula. I would be interested to know.

While I understand that you chose Maria Louise as the Head of the matrilineal house in blue (bottom left), I'd like to add that Elizabeth II's father George VI and his mother Mary of Teck come from the House of Maria Louise via descent of the sister of Maria Louise, Countess Caroline Felizitas of Leiningen-Dagsburg. If you trace their matrilineal line farther back, you eventually reach Countess Magdalena of Waldeck.

I would rename the House Maria-Theresia after her Grandmother Christine-Luise Oettingen-Oettingen, since M-T's aunts , were Sophie Charlotte who was married to Alexej Romanov, though I don't know what happened to her daughter Natalia, and Antoniette-Amalie who married the Duke of Wolfenbüttel and mothered Elisabeth-Christine the queen consort of Prussia, and Luise-Amalie who married August-Wilhelm of Prussia and produced the children her sister lacked (among those Wilhelmine, the wife of Wilhelm V Orange), and Sophie-Antonia, who married the Duke of Coburg, and Juliane-Marie who married the King of Denmark. That's at least 'tries' for dynastie enough, even if the later generations should have perished in the female line.

Overthrowing the monarchy in Spain requires a VAST parliamentary majority which does not exist. The only way to do it would be via a coup. Apart from that, the Crown is actually one of the most popular institutions in Spain. Institutions are not very popular here as we like to complain a lot.

Squabbles is an understatement! Look at the War of the Roses. In the video about the Aussie being king, his family was harassed up to the 1900's, which I'm sure explains the migration to stop killing off that branch of the family.

Fascinating... It shows the historical unimportance of women, while showing their actual importance and relevance. Queen Elizabeth is an interesting case, since her Mother was not of royal birth (its not even certain where she was born, why bother to record the birth of the third daughter of an Earl?) and her maternal grandmother was of even lower birth. A quick wikipedia check shows we only know QE2's maternal ancestry back to around 1750, with the families getting less and less important with each generation back. Of course this means each succeeding daughter married up eventually resulting in Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon becoming Queen. I'd like to think that some younger daughter of the house of Garsenda back in the 1300's or 1400's who is not recorded here, ran off with a handsome Scottish soldier and their daughters and grand-daughters worked hard to marry up until one eventually married the son of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and then her daughter married the second son of the British King.
