Finally watched this for my first time ever! Fun to see Keaton's first film appearance. AND with his buddy Fatty Arbuckle!

Roscoe’s films were genuinely some of the best ever. Thank you for sharing this. I just watched it with my 14-year-old after watching the version of the molasses bit that Buster did with Ed Wynn on tv. I think both molasses scenes are great but the full film is so much better.

Buster Keaton gave much praise and accolade to Fatty Arbuckle, saying he was a genius at his work - comedy. He also praised Arbuckle for helping and teaching him much. Many silent comedians attribute their learned skills from Arbuckle. Arbuckle was No. 1 - the top grosser of his day.

Notice at about 23:24 Buster motions toward his head, as if asking if he can go get his hat. I just love Buster's and his hat.

Buster's first outing on film - what a privilege to see. 125 years since this film was made and is still being viewed by millions. Buster can be seen, in this early film, to perform his signature, elaborate/acrobatic fall, that became his trademark in the new Film-Land so to speak - right from the get-go. It must have been learned and perfected in his Vaudeville years and then transferred to film - and helped earn his living in his subsequent movie career. Good for him - he worked his a** off . He is a hero of the first order.

You think that when Buster smiles slightly at 16:36 it was on purpose, or perhaps he broke character for a moment. It was said that in real life he had a hard time keeping the deadpan face at times.
@pschardien5 жыл бұрын
Buster hadn't really begun his "great stone face" persona yet. It was until around 1920 I think when he began doing that regularly. Also, I wonder if "Slim" is Harold Lloyd??

Happy 100 Years of movies, Buster, we love you! (Love goes out to you too, Roscoe..the original Chris Farley, who gave Buster his first break, thank the cinema gods) And a special kiss always for the amazing Luke the Dog, you are a superstar, buddy!

+MontagZoso Mr.farley was really considering playing fatty before he passed away way too soon at thirty three.
@josephcalderon9067 жыл бұрын
+MontagZoso He would've been near perfect as roscoe conkling arbuckle.because mr.farley was,an excellent physical comic,watching him on his snl years and in his movies.(where he performed most of his stunts). him and the late great john ritter and jim varney were best physical comics of the modern comics or comic actors.i don't know why the hell that jim carrey is so revered for his skills as a physical comedian.he pales in comparison to these three men.
@MontagZoso7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I read about Chris Farley wanting to play Roscoe (John Belushi and John Candy had also wanted to play him) but Chris left us way too soon. Jim Carrey ironically is a huge Buster Keaton fan. ;)

+Montag Zoso I know that carrey's a fan ever since i had seen him interviewed on the afi's 100 years 100 stars second annual special on june 14,1999.
