Hi Todd. Greetings from Rochester New York. I started golfing back in 1995 when I was 35 years old. The local golf pro that I went to asked me right off the bat what my objectives were, my answer was simple, I want to be competitive in any after work golf league. So he set me up with a very simple swing that wasn’t complicated that didn’t have a lot of movement, basically old man’s golf “keep the ball and play”and it worked perfect. I was always very competitive in the after work leagues and I was able to shoot consistent scores, golf was fun. When my son was born in 2005 I put the clubs away. Fast-forward to 2024 he is 18 now and is a very good golfer so he got me playing again so now I’m 63 and my body can’t do the things that used to, even though I am in great physical shape for someone my age and I was finding my golf swing of 30 years ago wasn’t working as well as it did back then. About 2 months ago I came across your channel . It has really helped me to get my swing dialed back in. I purchased your book and I’ve watched many of your videos going step-by-step through your entire process and not just taking bits and pieces of it. We are fortunate that we have a large net in the garage and a full mat and heat in the garage so we can go out and hit golf balls whenever we want. The vertical line system was very similar to what I learned 30 years ago, except for a few minor tweaks here and there. So it was very easy for me to adapt to your system. One of the things that I’m still struggling with a little bit is hitting behind the ball. I can see it on the mat when I practice. So this video that came out today will be a huge help. I can hit 10 balls in a row, and hit them perfect and then the next three or four I’ll be hitting way behind the ball. I personally think it’s a weight shift issue with me and possibly ball position too. So that is my homework for tonight. The other thing that helped me, and this is what I learned back when I started playing was how important it is to have clubs that are cut to the right length. I’m on the short side of 5 foot 8 but my arms are a little on the long side so my clubs have always been cut -1 inch. And this has always worked well for me. Now because of my age I have a lot of stiffness in my hands. I also went with to an oversized grips, and that really helped. And believe it or not also wearing a golf glove on each hand which I know is not conventional. This keeps my hands from stiffening up after hitting a lot of balls. My son and I have join a non-competitive golf league and I am looking forward to getting back out there. Todd thank you for remembering us “experienced” golfers. Bob K Rochester NY

Great comments. I'm 65, have a hard time closing the ring and pinky finger on my left ( top ) hand . I found a change to the " Mid size " grips helped . I'm😊 considering going up to the next bigger grip size, but wonder how that might affect my swing / grip . Also I sometimes wear a pair of Footjoy " Winter " gloves, I find the extra padding helps ( and I assume you meant you wear two " gloves " not " clubs 😅 ) James Smith, BC , Canada

@@JamesSmith-mw8xy James, thank you for the spell check. I read over that about a dozen times too lol I'll blame it on my age 😆 Wearing both gloves was a game changer. There are a few pro's that wear both so hey if they can do it then so can I. My over size grips I purchased off of Amazon. KINGRASP Grips $52 US for 13 grips. I changed them myself. Its really easy. Thanks for the response.

john daley was putting on a swing clinic 20 years ago at torrey. He asked the audience what the single most problematic part of the swing was causing players the most trouble. Someone said i’m hitting behind the ball. JD had the young man step out and handed him a 7 i. JD asked the golfer to hit to a ball and sure enough he hit behind it. A second time same result. JD said your bottoming out an inch behind the ball. JD set him up again this time JD moved the ball 2” back. the next swing was striped with a shallow divot. Another two shots were perfectly executed. JD simply said to everyone don’t think to much!!!!Golf is easy!!

3:01 I could use some new clubs, a new golf cart, and some golf coaching LOL. In all seriousness great video. Had a lesson from my pga pro and he taught me the exact same thing. My fat shots have slowly crept back and now I remember why lol. Went outside and hit every shot exactly how I wanted lol. TY

First time I've heard someone say that an overly shallow swing can lead to poor low point control. That resonates very much with me. I definitely come into the ball shallow and take minimal divots. I go through periods where I'm thinning the ball and shanking the ball. I'll have to give steepening the swing a go. This might help with both of those issues and also result in a bit tighter dispersion.

You are spot on, being too shallow can lead to poor contact for many golfers. We discuss this and much more in our book The Bad Lie and the Vertical Line Swing. If interested in learning more, see here www.badliegolfbook.com/

Hello Todd Mike here from Portland Oregon. Thank you for these tips. My question to you is I sometimes feel like I’m driving the club into the ground. Could that be a result of one of these reasons of hitting behind the ball? I guarantee you I’m doing at least the first two in your video. Thanks for your help

Create video, very helpful, but my question is after several injuries and aging a little. I have lost my distance as I believe my swing speed is gotten very slow… How do I increase that and fix it?

2 things. First, the swing direction demo from down the line looked severely out-to-in path. Second, and this is big for me I think, is early extension or “casting”. Low point control is my number one priority (which I am making some erratic progress at correcting with weight shift (as you showed) and keeping my trail wrist at maximum extension so far)🙁
