Noah... STFU please! They are certainly not lying, and any small piece of education in geology, even grade school would show you that... If they are lying then take ur ass to the volcano, take measurements, publish a paper and allow us to examine and replicate your findings... But until you do that, please keep your fucking mouth shut!
@jamesgrist11016 жыл бұрын
it was poor that they couldn't estimate how long the lava flows would last. If they know its the high reservoir being drained from a new lower exit then after over 30 years of study they should have an estimate of the size of the reservoir, coupled with estimates of the flow rates and pressure would give an estimate of the duration. College maths. But that's why geologists become geologists and not STEM scholars, useless at anything analytic or technical.
@brendanh89786 жыл бұрын
It sounds almost as if the new eruptive center might be moving down rift for the long haul. That's bad news for the people that live in the Puna area. It didn't go on for too long in 1955, but who can really say why it stopped then, and if it will do the same again.

One of the best explanations thus far. I fully empathize with him (the speaker) on trying to give a technical talk to non technical folks so they understand better as to what's going on. I am a retired engineer who had to do these types of presentations and it wasn't easy to limit or eliminate the "uh and um" especially when thinking on your feet. With a canned speech this should not happen so cut him some slack. His explanation of the "conduits and balancing of lava levels" is good. He seems very knowledgeable as to how volcanos function with ducts, vents and flows.

Slowly the locals will adapt and move on. They know they live over a volcano, it's already in their DNA. As the USGS guy pretty much said, this could go on for a long time until the reservoirs reach equilibrium.
@elmurcis16 жыл бұрын
As seen on live webcam, lava flow changes time by time but in general, its steady and kind of "predictable". As long as it keeps steady pace, even some lost usable ground won't be big issue. Only kind of new cracks somewhere else (and new fissures erapting) and/or some serious eruption from central lava-channel could make things worse. After initial evacuation and after lava got to the ocean (nobody could be sure how serious that moment can be), it kinds of makes me less worry about future, just anybody near it has to keep eyes wide open and be ready to move some miles away more. Enjoying this action and same time crossing fingers that locals won't get too much trouble. All best from far far away Latvia =))

Very interesting. So we could possibly see this lava activity go beyond the previous eruptions that lasted close to 90 days. That would add a lot of land to the big island. Btw, have they started digging trenches around the geo thermal plant yet? How about putting up concrete blocks? Now might be a good time.

A trench will get filled up it will spill over concrete blocks but most importantly (and seen quite clearly from the footage) the lava is flowing away from the plant.

@jefft43036 жыл бұрын
Back in 19 whatever, old magma cooled a bit, constricting or even plugging up the conduit, but only at a point east of Pu-u-O-o. You know this because lava lake levels at Pu-u-O-o, and the summit crater rose and fell with pressure changes from the main hotspot. You also know the old magma conduit probably didn't "freeze solid", or else it wouldn't be spewing today. It remained under pressure, and recently, something gave way, to re-open that part of the conduit. The weak new flow melted more rock and broke off other obstructions, widening the pipe. You can probably go back to the seismic records and watch this process, with the benefit of hindsight. Good chance the weight/pressure of the vertical column of magma and lava lake at Pu-u-O-o caused the recent major change. Had it been the main hotspot inflow, or the summit crater, you'd have seen the lava lake at Pu-u-O-o fluctuate first, but it didn't. Now, there's a new "balance of pressure". This balance includes reduced "head heigth" at the two old lava lakes, and outflow from the fissure system, and inflow from the main hotspot. Pressure is the key variable, but there are supporting variables as well. Magma that's sitting still, but buckling ground above it, can begin outgassing, reducing pressure, leading to accelerating outgassing and more fracturing, a potential vicious circle. Moving magma, under pressure, pushes outward on the conduit walls, and, at certain points, exhibits complex pressures. Moving magma is at lower pressures than parked magma, until it encounters a bend in the conduit or obstruction, at which point, the moving mass and velocity squared can come into play. 300 to 600 foot high fountains imply generous velocities, which, if squared, can dwarf other forces, temporarily. Lava, in air, tends to cool. All of the visible lava today...is tomorrow's possible plug that ends this eruption cycle. One partially melted rock, lodging on an obstruction, a few degrees cooling, this could end suddenly. But historically, there have been several. surges or cycles, before long term, static (non-eruptive) equilibrium is reached. Once the initial flow pinches off, another weak part of the system lets go, and moves more magma till it pinches off too. I feel for the geologists. Everyone wants to know what happens next...and even the volcano doesn't know that. Best bet. When things do start to slow down, watch the seismic events closely, with a system wide map in mind. Where the quakes happen MAY let you know how the whole system is reacting to increased pressure as tbe current fissure flows cool off and become plugged.

Is that conduit to the lower rift zone to scale or even close? If so that would be or could be a permanent fixture and when large events happen naturally it could seemingly act like a shotgun propelling mass ejection down line perhaps creating an entirely new summit closer to the ocean.

In 1914, the Mount Pele volcano in Martinique erupted; 30,000 people lost their lives... This is a different type of volcano; however, very unpredictable, as these fissures seem to open up "everywhere." These 1.43 million people should have been evacuated, starting weeks ago. They would now have to be confined to the areas farthest away, but who knows where another vent could open up...

So you Linda, Phil and Letty believe that the USGS is all knowing and no one else can do any better job of conjecturing what is on the line? Has the USGS said anything about the depth of the Riff Zone which is important when it comes to the possibility of that whole section sliding off the shelf into the ocean. It makes a big difference. That riff zone looks like a knife cutting through a cake, but yet the USGS continues to not report of that possibility. Also, we must ask why is that riff zone bubbling up now and why in such a straight line. Lets hear some actual discussion on the possibility of those "Whys". It is better to get it out now, than have anyone in the vicinity if and when it goes creating a huge Tsunami.
