15:05 "Wallace" the report is talking about is Henry A. Wallace. He was Vice-President during FDR's third term but was replaced by Truman during Roosevelt's fourth term. He then became Secretary of Commerce. Truman fired him as Secretary of Commerce in 1946 because of his pro-Soviet views. Wallace then ran against Truman in the 1948 Presidential election on the left-wing Progressive Party where he only received about 2.3% of the vote. Harold Wallace was definitely the President that the Soviet Union would have wanted, but as this report shows, they knew he wasn't going to win the election. "Stassen" is Harold Stassen. He was the former Governor of Minnesota who tried to run as the Republican candidate for President in 1948 but lost in the Republican Primary to Thomas E. Dewey. 16:38 The "stupid book" was probably Elliott Roosevelt's 1946 book "As He Saw It". It was about the meetings between Franklin Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin. 16:55 "Priestley" was author J.B. Priestley, who in 1949 made it on George Orwell's list of people suspected of being Communist sympathizers.

And the Soviets sized up Stassen’s political acumen quite accurately.

By the time I became politically aware (in the early 60s) Stassen was a perennial joke in politics and the butt of comedians or wannabe comedians, always running for president or some other office and going absolutely nowhere with it. But you could always count on him running.

Wow! Sergei, you still got it. This episode blew my mind a bit. I remembered the authors name but didn't put the grapes of wrath connection together till you did. Or anything about his trip to USSR. Keep up the good work. Never even heard of this book. The declassified documents are so cool.

I have not read the book, however the movie ( grapes of wrath ) stuck me as having a socialist theme. The poor are victims of the rich capitalist only saved in the end by the government who supply free food, shelter, safety and even flush toilets unseen before by at least the children. Now if only Russia can do the same the utopian paradise would become a reality. Like your work. Thanks.

Looks like "A Russian Journal" by John Steinback is available for reading on The Internet Archive, but not for downloading. The photographer Robert Capa was a famous photojournalist of WWII, so maybe the pictures are somewhere

Interesting direction you are taking this "show." What a constant cover up. Those assisting had to realize the "dog & pony" they were assigned with. My dad (missionary) in Japan hooked Chinese sailors up with merican G I's just to play basketball game & both sides "brass" tried to turn it into a spy novel.

If Steinbeck stayed in a hotel in Moscow (likely) , he would have been listened to electronically and likely filmed secretly through mirrors etc. Team Canada, players and coaches, experienced this during the Canada/Russia summit series in the early 70’s.

I don't know I think 1947 You're still fairly early into the Cold war it really wasn't till later maybe as late as 1950 that the Cold war really picks up
