Weeds are always an issue in home gardens and market gardens. One way we control weeds on our Red Oak Texas local farm is to use 20-30 percent vinegar. Vinegar is an effective and organic method to control weeds around your organic produce and flowers. We use 30 percent vinegar mixed with a small amount of soap on our homestead. We also use a flame weeder and woven weed fabric to suppress weeds on Savvy Organics Farm. More on using other methods of weed control in another video soon.

As someone who sells awnings and shade products, the reason you are not getting any reduced heat from your shade cloth is because it is BLACK. This is a common mistake most people make. Does it SHADE? yes, Does it attract HEAT? YES. Shade and Heat Protection are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. You needed to get a WHITE Shade Cloth. We find this in the RV industry, people get so hot in their RV's so they buy these $$$ front windshield "shades" and of course they get black,,,,,,,,,,,,,then cannot understand why their RV is even hotter.
@davegrenier1160
@davegrenier1160 11 ай бұрын
It is as important that the shade should be elevated above the greenhouse. Whatever color the shade, it will be struck by the sun. An air gap reduces the efficiency of the transfer of heat from the shade to the greenhouse. I'm sure he'd have better results by just raising the shade to make an air gap. Direct contact is allowing heat transmission by conduction. A white shade would help by reflecting some heat, but would also be more effective if raised, by preventing heat conduction. Air is an insulator, as anyone knows who is familiar with how outdoor clothing and sleeping bags are made (and double-pane windows). The idea is to impede the transmission of heat.

Say rather that black objects absorb more solar energy than do white ones, thereby becoming hotter. There is no mechanism by which anything black "attracts" heat.

I used a household white vinegar / water mix and a little soap to make it penetrate better and basically drowned a ton of moss with it. Stone dead in a few days, super easy to power wash away. But the vinegar didn't go anywhere so when it rained the runoff hit the lawn from the asphalt I had treated and turned the edge a little brown-ish. So I went back and poured some bicarbonate/water over top to neutralize what remained, not sure if that worked but can't hurt I guess... I'll trade a few centimeters of lawn temporarily for not having a bunch of moss all over the place.

This is a good video. I used to develop and print B&W film and photo shops sold glacial Acetic acid. It is basically 90% so it got diluted to about 15% or you could get premixed stop bath. I never wore gloves with 15% but in photography class some kids had issues so they wore gloves. 30% would definitely require protection on eyes and skin. Don't breathe the mist. BTW, I ran out of stop bath and I used 5% vinegar. It worked but the emulsion on the paper took longer to harden. Never tried in on film because I didn't want to risk scratching the negatives.But I digress.

Another thing we need to be careful about is not spraying this on or near cement or concrete because it will damage or dissolve it.

If you use vinegar at that strength on your yard in a typical neighborhood the chances of having your neighbors call hazmat is quite high. Out in a field away from homes and businesses would be better. But, if you are in the middle of a field after spraying a large section you risk death . Typical respirators even well fitted still aren’t foolproof. The exertion, lack of enough oxygen due to high filtration and possible intake of the vinegar fumes all can contribute to a fatal attempt to control weeds. I am not joking about this, a research student at UC Davis was found dead out in the field spraying a vinegar solution during a study for the control of weeds with vinegar, this was about 2 1/2 years ago out in Davis Ca. I’m retired now but held 3 QAL licenses with the Calif. DPR. A,F & P. Be careful out there.

Regarding the shade cloth on your greenhouse. I had the same problem with my greenhouse overheating and I used WHITE 50% shade cloth and it worked well. Can I safely kill weeds at the bottom of blueberry bushes without hurthing the Blueberry plants?
@SavvyOrganicsFarm
@SavvyOrganicsFarm Жыл бұрын
Yes, the spray must ONLY contact the foliage of the weeds you want to suppress or kill. I would recommend doing several "light" sprays over several days. It is critical NOT to get the vinegar on the blueberry plant. Blueberries also have a shallow root system. Again, this is why I would do several "light" applications rather than a heavier dosing. Be careful with this!

I just started using 30% with a squirt of Dawn added to break the surface tension and help it stick better last week. We have Asian jasmine in several place on our property, planted by the previous owners. I have tried on and off for years to get rid of it but I think this may finally be the answer. We are on acreage, surrounded by woods and the vines are starting to work their way towards the woods and our native plant fields - which I want to prevent. Asian jasmine makes a pretty, sweet smelling flower - but it is a rampantly invasive non-native. My first spray resulted in dead foliage within less that a week. My plan is to spray at least once a week in an attempt to eventually kill the roots by killing the foliage as soon as it sprouts out again. Repeatedly killing new growth should deplete the roots and kill them in the long run.

I am trying to remove black mold from concrete driveway. I almost bought 30% vinegar but got confused when label said, great for driveways, then in fine print said limit prolonged contact with concrete. I tried Simple Green heavy duty cleaner, it removed some but required extensive scrubbing. 5% vinegar removed it with some scrubbing. Bleach worked without any scrubbing. Trying to decide on bleach vs. 30% vinegar. The 30% bottle says dilute it 1:64. This video showed me I don’t have to dilute it at all. Sorry to ramble but would 30% vinegar work better than (or as good as) bleach for mold, and if so, should I dilute it by half for safety?
